The other earlier titles (such as Blackmail, The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), or Secret Agent) are either public domain or have yet to get a notable US label to license them for a decent DVD release.
Thanks for this great list. It just depresses me how many of these are owned by Universal...

Someone earlier mentioned Lifeboat. It's a near great and neglected film. The negative, however, was damaged due to improper storage by Fox. It may still be worth it on blu....but...

I just rented Criterion's release of Stagecoach. That one was damaged quite a bit too. It's kinda painful to watch in places, imho...Probably I'm too picky, but I wouldn't want to own it.

only film of his i've enjoyed (and completely love, in my personal top 10) has been Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. i remember when i first heard he was directing The Green Hornet. i was baffled. just didn't seem like something he would be involved in with his previous work, but hey, whatever.

The Green Hornet isn't on my horizon any time soon to see it, but eventually i'll get to it

As a lover for Asian cinema, I'm still trying to decide if Pale Flower is worth a blind-buy. Hmmm.

I'm disappointed. I ordered Fish Tank from the latest Amazon sale. My blu-ray copy arrived today. I opened the cardboard package and took off the plastic wrap. I can't find any damage anywhere. No crushes, no tears, no stickers, no goo.

Based on your titles you listed:

Two-Lane Blacktop (for your Cockfighter listing)
This Sporting Life (for your If... listing)
The Killing of a Chinese Bookie
Easy Rider
House
Repulsion
Straw Dogs
Bigger Than Life
Fists in the Pocket (my pick for you that isn't based on your favs)

Now if you want, some NON-Criterions you might like:

The Great Silence (for your Spaghetti Western pick), if you have seen it, don't worry, I'll go deeper as I am a huge Spaghetti Western fan. How about "Bullet for the General" with Klaus Kinski (from the Great Silence) and Lou Castel (from Fists in the Pocket, the title I picked above for you). Seen that? Okay, deeper in it, how about "Kill and Pray" with Lou Castel. If you liked Fistful of Dollars, you'll love these.

It's very funny, and was surprised to see an actor I didn't know was even in it towards the beginning of the film (though others prob did as I didn't follow it closely when it was being made). Let's just say he had a funny altercation with Christoph Waltz's character.

I have seen most of those but will add Bigger Than Life and Fists in the Pocket to my "to watch" list! Thanks!

As for the Italian Westerns I have seen all of those. You have great taste The Great Silence and Bullet for the general are my two favorite non-Leone Italian Westerns. Have you seen Django: the Bastard? I just saw it tonight and it is really great - good gothic atmosphere.

This is totally based on my own personal preference, but I absolutely adore:
- Seven Samurai (Kurosawa);
- The Royal Tenenbaums (Anderson);
- Kanal (Wajda);
- The Thin Red Line (Malick);
- Harlan County U.S.A. (Kopple);
- High and Low (Kurosawa);
- Ballad of a Soldier (Chukhrai);
- The Night of the Hunter (Laughton);
- La Jetée (Marker);
- Fanny and Alexander (Bergman).

These are all part of my personal top 20 of best films ever.

Warner dropped the ball with the Kane set though by including DVD's for extras and Ambersons. (I may go with the UK version).

In Criterion news, I just ordered Certified Copy from Amazon UK--- so watch the Big C announce it Monday

Ha, that is a great movie! I say ha because on more than one occasion, I have gone over to my Hitch boxset looking for one to see that I haven't seen yet, and for whatever reason, I pick that one only to realize that once it starts, I know I viewed it before. But I watch it again anyhow.

Love it love it love it.

My wife and I did that with The 39 Steps. Almost 6 years after we saw it for the first time, we were looking through Netflix to stream something, and the synopsis for The 39 Steps sounded great. Of course, we didn't realize at the time that we had seen it before, but sure enough, halfway through the film, while enjoying it over again, we realized that some of the scenes seemed really familiar. From that point forward, we were able to predict what was going to happen (but luckily forgot the ending).

The review alone was enough for me to blind buy this title. Who else has seen 'When a Woman Ascends the stairs'? I loved it, would love a blu-ray release along with..

Harakiri
Sansho the Baliff
Ugetsu

Here's to hoping!

wow, started BLOW UP las nite as i had just received it in the mail. What a great transfer and im viewing it on a HD CRT...

makes me wonder how travolta got derailed somewhere after this movie.

looking forward to this and how it ends.

Whoever said this transfer is horrible needs to adjust their tv settings.

most likely all movies will end up looking better, worth looking into,,

Wow...just checked out thereview of Solaris on beaver's website and all I can say is wow.

The screen grabs, although not a complete indication of the picture quality we will see once the image is in motion, looked amazing. I am very excited for this release. It has been years since I watched the DVD version years ago in my parents' house on a 27" 4:3 television!
