Have not seen this film myself, and though somewhat curious about the rest of it, have certainly heard about those infamous scenes for decades. Something I have no desire to witness. I have a hard time watching the opening scene of a more recent Taiwanese film, Help Me Eros. An oustanding film, but the opening (and lingering) shot of a carp being prepared alive, though an apt allegory for the main character's predicament, is arguably quite brutal. Though there may be a degree of cultural indoctrination in our level of sensitivity towards methods of food slaughter and culinary preparation - trust me, I was married to a Chinese woman and never quite got used to her father's preparation of lobster. I'll take mine whole with butter please.

Okay, we'll start with you.
Seriously though, there's no "torture" in this (okay, maybe the muskrat...poor thing) all are killed quick and humanely and were consumed by the actors and natives, who actually convinced the director not to use fake monkies as monkey brains were considered a delicacy.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume you're a vegetarian?

The turtle scene is the longest scene but that's more gross than disturbing. They cut the head off first so its not like it felt anything after it.
The muskrat was the only animal that looked as if it felt pain and even that is luckily very brief.
Its seriously way overblown.

What happened to the muskrat? Oh and no I'm not a vegetarian but don't want to see animals being killed. So nothing was tortured in this? That is good at least.

Ahhh.
Yeah, they're all very quick, humane and the scenes are overall quite brief outside the cooking of the turtle. As for the muskrat, the guide who is taking the professor to find the tribes puts a knife into it and cuts upwards while its still alive.
Its one shot that lasts about 3ish seconds but still unpleasant. It was the only animal death that made me go "aww"

Nice discussion about the initial reception. We have a great library at the local film museum here, which has a huge collection of review clippings and articles for all movies that premiered in Denmark since the museum's opening. Think I will pop in and take a look at the file for Cannibal Holocaust when I go there to watch a 35mm screening of Burial Ground: The Nights of Terror next week. Should be interesting, though I would guess it was panned by the local critics, like most genre movies were (and are).

I never see anybody else go into a movie specific thread to slag off a film.

So why is it apparently acceptable here? If you're actually going to purchase or like the film, like I do, I think it's alright to discuss it. I hate seeing animals die regardless of real or not, or scenario, but I love the movie, so I'll watch the cruelty free version.

But if you don't like the film or have no intention of getting it, please, I repeat please, DO NOT enter this thread solely to complain about the animal violence without discussing the film.

Nobody enters a thread to insult all of its fans by complaining about something, so be respectful and don't do it here. Unless you're willing to discus the film, I'd rather not have to constantly read "IM NOT GETTING THIS ANIMALS WERE KILLED ITS SICK"

What I prefer to read is "animals were killed. It's horrible, I love this film"

Very good points, I agree. Certainly not trying to take away from anybody's enjoyment of the film, and I apologize if my comments were construed as such. I'm actually considering buying the film since they instituted a cruelty free version. Just wasn't quite sure what to expect never having seen it. Growing up in the 1980's this was one of those films people dared you to watch, along with I Spit on Your Grave and Last House on the Left. And back then anyway, you weren't considered quite right if you did. I guess for some people this film had attained an almost mythical status, particulary when it was much more difficult to procure. And yes, I do own the other two films on Blu-ray, though have yet to watch them thus far.

You find the "holier than thou" type in most threads about controversial movies. I mean, remember the guy who basically accused all who wanted an uncut version of Death Wish II of being misogynists and would-be rapists...

I'm a vegetarian and I plan on watching the uncut cruel version. I do think it's kind of funny that so many people wouldn't care if their food was cruelty free but their movies? Well that's just sick lol.

agreed. IMO if you don't agree with content in a movie...don't buy it. End of story. Otherwise, let the rest of us enjoy our exploitation please

I'm dying to have this BD, especially since I sold my DVD in anticipation.
