I wouldn't worry about a Criterion release or 6 hour extended version for a long while. I just watched it and this release stunning as is. Other than extras, I don't think a Criterion release could really improve on it. They're more concerned with older titles.

How did you get it when it releases 10/11?

Yeah I just finished watching it, simply stunning transfer, one of the best I've ever seen.

There might be a Criterion of the theatrical cut eventually though. Hope so.
yeah Terrence certainly didn't wait that long to film his next movie did he? I guess he jettisoned the IMAX version of the 'Birth of the Universe' sequence.

I couldn't stand this movie when I saw it in theaters. Maybe it was because I was extremely exhausted and falling asleep. I want to see it again, but I'm in no hurry. So I'll wait until Criterion puts it out. If they announce it's a 0% chance, then I'll grab this edition.

It's getting kind of silly how people assume that every art-house film to be released on a semi-wide scale is going to be distributed through CC. If you liked this film, buy this blu-ray release. Support the film right off the bat. If CC ever releases this it will be YEARS from now, in a retrospective package. I'm sure this release will be MORE than adequate.

Also, don't hold your breath for the six-hour cut. Malick is a busy man.

Christian Bale was going to be in his movie with Rachel McAdams, but something came up and Bale had to drop out. He was replaced with Affleck, unfortunately. = /

I think the reason why myself and others have asked if it will be released by Criterion is because most of Malicks other films have been released by Criterion. Also, I don't understand why some newer titles, like The Darjeeling Limited & Anti-Christ were released by Criterion very, very soon after being released regularly, but The Tree of Life has no chance for "YEARS"..

You got this right. I've seen a few people clamoring for Drive to get a Criterion release.

No thanks, I'll be happy with a regular $15-$20 release by Sony or whoever.

Well he is shooting *something* with Bale, did you see the video in the Criterion thread? Maybe the stuff with Affleck was not up to scratch and he is reshooting it with Bale

TBF, Affleck could be OK if he pulls one out of the hat.

I know... ...there is already a precedent with Criterion/Malick/Fox (Thin Red Line) so it must have a reasonable chance of happening

Well, Antichrist was part of the IFC deal so that's why it was released so soon by CC (and even then there were rumors that they wouldn't release it). If it wasn't an IFC film, I don't think it would have received a CC release. And while CC and Fox/Malick do have a good relationship, I can't see fox giving them a brand new movie (that could very well garner some Academy Award nominations) right off the bat. Just my opinion.

From what I've read and heard it's another Malick film all together. Not the one he shot with Ben Affleck here in Oklahoma this past summer.

I wouldn't be surprised if Criterion released Tree of Life in a couple years. Fox put out their own DVD of The Darjeeling Limited first, and Criterion released theirs a few years later.

I wouldn't say "most"... Malick has made 5 films, and TWO of them have been issued by Criterion.

And like someone said, Criterion released Anti-Christ was released due to their deal with IFC.

I did hear a rumor somewhere that Criterion is working on Badlands. I don't know if it's true, but if it is, then that would be 3.

Nevertheless, Criterion seems to like him. All of his movies would be great additions to the collection, in my opinion.

I am glad to see the DVD Beaver review. I had no doubt in my mind this release would be reference quality in both picture & audio. I just pre-ordered The Tree of Life 15 minutes ago, so I am pretty excited to be receiving this.

It's illegal to buy this film on DVD.
