They do. I checked yesterday.

Same here. I haven't been able to open the window to paypal as my payment option since yesterday on desktop and mobile browsers and the mobile app. Now, I can't get past the first stage of signing up when trying for the past hour or so. I'll probably try again late tonight. Also curious as to why the sign up button says 'sign up for free'.

It's kind of hard when you don't have the time. Or when there are only a few good movies coming out each year.

They sell data that they collect from the people who sign up. That's how they make money back.

Not that much different than finding the time to watch a movie at home. And there are plenty of good movies to see each year. Certainly many that are better than Batman v Superman, Resident Evil, Underworld, and ID Resurgence. Which are some big turds of the last few years.

AMC Theatres® Statement about MoviePass Announcement: “Not Welcome Here”

LEAWOOD, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AMC Theatres® announced today its concern that an announcement by a small fringe player in the reselling of movie tickets is not in the best interest of moviegoers, movie theatres and movie studios. Accordingly, AMC is consulting with its attorneys to determine if or how AMC can prevent a subscription program offered by MoviePass from being used at AMC Theatres in the United States. AMC is the largest movie theatre operator in the United States.

MoviePass announced a change to its “subscription model” that would allow consumers to see up to 365 movies a year for a monthly fee of $9.95. MoviePass envisions paying AMC its full ticket price without discount. The AMC average ticket price for watching a movie at AMC Theatres in the most recent financial quarter was $9.33. From what we can tell, by definition and absent some other form of other compensation, MoviePass will be losing money on every subscriber seeing two movies or more in a month.

Bloomberg today called it a “crazy plan.” AMC noted that it is not yet known how to turn lead into gold. AMC believes that holding out to consumers that first run movies can be watched in theatres at great quantities for a monthly price of $9.95 isn’t doing moviegoers any favors. In AMC’s view, that price level is unsustainable and only sets up consumers for ultimate disappointment down the road if or when the product can no longer be fulfilled. AMC also believes that promising essentially unlimited first-run movie content at a price below $10 per month over time will not provide sufficient revenue to operate quality theatres nor will it produce enough income to provide film makers with sufficient incentive to make great new movies. Therefore, AMC will not be able to offer discounts to MoviePass in the future, which seems to be among their aims.

While AMC is not opposed to subscription programs generally, the one envisioned by MoviePass is not one AMC can embrace. We are actively working now to determine whether it may be feasible to opt out and not participate in this shaky and unsustainable program.

That particular article's headline "not welcome here" is misleading. AMC doesn't like it and want to explore their legal options, but the fact is since it works as a Mastercard debit card you just use for payment, there is no way for them to refuse it without violating their contract with Mastercard. (and to avoid even the chance of resistance, just use the kiosks)

Eh, agree to disagree. Underworld and BvS were fantastic movies actually. RE and ID Resurgence weren't the best but they were fun to watch. I like what I like. A majority of movies don't look good enough for me to waste my time on.

Both of my theatres are on this. It still says Carmike though even though it's AMC Classic now.

This is disappointing. They make it seem like any theater that offers e-ticketing will also have that ability through moviepass.com

At the theaters I frequent, if you waiting until just before the show starts and book at the theater there is usually only a few tickets left in the front few sections or completely sold out. We are used to booking tickets and seats well before the show and even weeks out sometimes. I would be ok with waiting until same day but needing to wait until we get to the theater is not optimal in my area. I guess I will see how it goes.

All this drama from AMC is really turning me off to the company. I'll use MoviePass any time I can, but I'll no longer be giving my money directly to AMC, nor will I buy any concessions while I'm there.

They are being greedy capitalist scum. They're literally not missing out on ANY money. If anything, this will spike their profits. They're claiming it's bad for the industry because it will set consumers up to expecting lower ticket prices? F*** off, AMC.

Also, complaining about the quantity of quality films? That's just laughable and ignorant. Unless you're literally the world's harshest critic, you should easily be able to see at least 1 really good film, in theaters, every month.

Really not getting AMC's point here. From what I've read today, this works exactly like a credit card, and they'll be getting their money immediately, just like any other ticket purchase. So if a new Moviepass customer goes from seeing one movie a month to seeing 20 or 30 movies a month, they'll be getting 20 or 30 times the income. Plus most of those customers will be buying snacks (except Jacob... ).

Until Moviepass (inevitably) goes bankrupt, the theaters should be seeing a noticeable increase in sales, right?

So if it's like a prepaid Mastercard..how much does Moviepass add on it every day? Movie ticket prices differ.

You go to the theater and click a few buttons on the app, and the money for the ticket is loaded while you wait. It doesn't hold a balance apparently.

I don't have any theaters showing up on my app.

The website that had all the theaters listed (unofficial one) can't get them to pop up. Do I have to wait for the card to come in the mail to get it to activate?

As I understand AMC's point, Moviepass could get consumers used to the idea of seeing all the movies they want for $10/month, and when Moviepass goes bust, they'll see the normal $12 and up ticket prices as a "rip-off."
