Agreed, shots like that are very much a staple for Mann, much like shots of the protagonist staring out at a vast landscape. I'll watch the director's cut this weekend, and I'm certainly pleased it's presented in widescreen, unlike when the theatrical version hit Cinemax and was presented at 1.78:1 (just wish it wasn't edited for its R-rated content, which I'm assuming it is given its FX).

Letterboxd review:
(Director's Cut [Or i guess they're calling it the Revised Version whatever]) an even better cut of a film i already loved; unfortunately Mann has excised two of my favorite moments, presumably for pacing reasons: 1) an OTS shot of Hathaway staring at his prison cell that's echoed later with a mirrored shot of Hathaway staring at an open runway as he tastes freedom for the first time in years 2) a small subjective bit of sensuality where Hathaway checks out Lien in the back of a car while riding to the Korean restaurant. delicately captured horniness is an undervalued cinematic skill fortunately these losses are mitigated by a rejiggered and greatly improved narrative, one that front-ends the eerie stock market hack and contains so much new material about soy futures that it starts to seem like a vérité agriculture doc. enhanced plot details about imports & crop insurance might not fascinate many but if the added narrative clarity provided here means i never have to defend the movie to its detractors by telling them to ignore the nonsense plotting "because it doesn't matter anyway" then thank god.
