Am I right that this is comparing the disc sales from the current 2016 week to the same week in 2015?
It seems like it would be highly reliant on what movies were released for the weeks in each year. If a big release came out last year at a certain week and not much for this years week the numbers would be way done and vice versa. Wouldn't year over year sales give a more realistic view of disc sale trends? |

It just goes to show you that people will always want to own good films and television shows on physical media, and obviously, increasingly on Blu-ray.
![]() And I'm sure that the huge influx of catalog titles in June helped boost revenue, too. I know I bought a ton last month, and spent more on movies than I have been able to in a long time, thanks to so many great new-to-Blu-ray titles. |

Yes, but only the cumulative total really matters. Year-to-date, BD is up (in the U.S.) 8.25% in dollars and 5.46% in units. It has a 36.8% physical market dollar share and a 24% unit share.
That's not bad. It's ahead of 2015, 2012, 2011 and 2010, but behind 2013 and 2014. Year-to-date, BD has done $953.29 million. In 2013, it had done almost $1.026 billion and in 2014, it had done almost $1.045 billion to date. On the other hand, DVD has done $1.635 billion to date, although in severe decline. By this time in 2010, it had done over $3.952 billion! Holy crap! At its current pace, BD won't hit $2 billion in sales for the year unless there are some really big titles coming out in the second half of this year. If it could manage to hit $2 billion again, I think that would really make the studios take notice that BD still has lots of life to it and should be paid attention to. |

But in spite of that, Blu-ray is having a good year, up well over last year, and is making good gains on market share. The past is dead, but the present looks pretty good. ![]() |
