Wow. My expectations for Manchester by the Sea keep going up. I loved Lonergan's You Can Count On Me, so we'll see if he can knock it out of the park again.

I guess I must be the only person who wasn't impressed with Naomie Harris in Moonlight. Not that I thought she was bad(although she looked too good for a crack addict), but Mahershala Ali was so good in that first act that he badly overshadowed her performance.

Best Actress? She's my pick right now, hands down. But Amy Adams will be a sentimental favorite with both Arrival and Nocturnal Animals. She's approaching Kate Winslet territory with 5 nominations and no wins. If she loses again, maybe she should do a Holocaust movie.

No, Natalie will win for Jackie. It's a political year. Hell, TWO years. Most of the Academy are men who remembered JFK's assassination. Trust me, she'll win.

But if Adams doesn't get nominated, then I may just watch the Red Carpet and screw the rest.

Yeah. Even MORE complicated.

I think what's working against Jessica, even more that a lack of buzz, is that she plays a political character -- and god are we all sick of this BS after almost 2 years of junk. I'm not sure anyone really wants to vote for a character who is a backstabbing lobbyist after all of this we've been through.
Isabelle Hubbard - Elle, too.

If it's a political year at the Oscars(and after the election result and Hollywood's reaction, I'd be stunned if it wasn't), I would expect Moonlight to dominate the Best Picture, Director, and Original Screenplay categories.

I don't really see how Natalie Portman will benefit from any political agenda. Jackie Kennedy/Onassis was never much of a political figure. JFK and his brothers, yes. But not Jackie.

I also think Lin-Manuel Miranda is a heavy favorite for Best Original Song for Moana after the Hamilton incident a few weeks ago.

Truth.

And if she ends up beating Natalie -- given I have not seen either film -- then I will have an eruption. I'm sure that Huppert is amazing. Everyone says she is. But come on, Natalie is playing JACKIE! If she doesn't win for that role then she might as well go back into bio-chemistry or whatever she was studying at college.

Why even bother?

You sure are approaching hyperbole territory in your want/need for Portman to win. I think you are putting far too much stock in this whole political year thing. I'm not saying she won't win, but it certainly won't be the most egregious thing if she doesn't. I still put Stone as the current favorite.

I'm going to have a conniption. And that's if I even watch the Oscars.

If I don't, it will be the first time in thirty years.

You sure are a funny one. Portman winning is a life/death situation, yet it's Adams being nominated to whether you even watch it or not.

I give up on this whole thing. Good luck to Moonlight.

I'll be watching the Red Carpet and that's it.

So to be clear, you think Portman should win because she is playing Jackie?

If that were the case, wouldn't all actresses produce low buget films about her, star in them, and get guaranteed Oscars?

I mean, the film and performance looks phenomenal, but let's not go overboard.

~

Anyways, in that categogry I suspect it will be Portman, Negis, Stone, Collins* and either Adams or Huppert. I honestly hope it goes to Huppert, I love Amy Adams and she does deserve to win sometime, but not for Arrival

*people underestimating Beatty make me laugh. That film is going to be nominated in every major category, and probably twice for lead actor.

The Beatty movie tanked and reviews aren't laudatory enough to compensate. It's not going anywhere.

I saw it a couple weeks ago and nearly fell asleep. And it was an AARP screening with a bunch of older folks there(the intended audience and the largest demographic of Oscar voters) and they were less than enthused as they left the theater. If it gets any major nominations, I'll be stunned.

It was a decent film at best, but it's Beatty we're talking about, he tends to work magic.

Dev Patel is Supporting for Lion? Thought he was the lead, at least based on what I've read about the movie. Anyway, nice to see Arrival and Hell or High Water among the contenders. Still surprised that Sully is making such noise.

I'm not necessarily surprised at Sully, critics and the Academy have always had love for just about anything Eastwood. To me the only glaring omission in this list is Silence, which of course has only been screened to a handful of critics so far, so that's why it's notably absent.
