I really regret posting that twitter feed, if I'm gonna be singled out for scolding just to parrot what everyone else is saying. Fine, I concede to your words. I'm done with this conversation, I believe there's nothing more to be said about the controversy.
Can't stand hanging in these forums. |

Needless to say when this news came out I woke up to the tweet and my day was ruined. I had the worst feeling this whole time something dumb like this would happen and that 2021 light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel would be ruined. Although a renegotiation of the contract may have tightened the reins a bit on HG's wily nonsense and maybe we'll get to have a crack at the sequels/spin-offs. |

Are the japanese Blu's still available beyond Amazon? They don't keep a very good list of what's in stock, plus what they do have is going beyond what they deserve to ask for. (Should be ILLEGAL!!)
I'm pretty much done with anything that has to do with the US side as it's nothing but butchered content anyways. I have ZERO interest in giving HG support, nor funding them just so they can continue doing this. Last edited by voltz; 07-17-2019 at 11:36 AM. |

Macross II, Macross 7 TV, Macross Frontier TV are out of print. Macross Plus OVA+Movie edition is also out of print, but you can still get the Movie edition re-release (Eng subs are missing in the re-release) or the Italian Blu-ray of the OVA edition.
II, 7 and Plus OVA+Movie fetch a pretty penny on the secondhand market. |

That's some rather slim pickings. I'm seeing a few of those packages at $800!
I just don't understand why Japan gives the foreign market this kind of treatment. Going so far to keep the franchise under a near monopoly thanks to someone with mafia ties and leaving our options limited is the absolute worst thing, plus nobody asked for our input on the matter before the extension was made. Just wtf is wrong with people?!? |

It seems like an agreement was reached to extend the license because of the live-action Robotech movie that is in development at Sony. Harmony Gold and Tatsunoko want the big Hollywood money and it would be a problem if HG lost the license.
In Japan the rights to most of the Macross properties are controlled by Big West, not Tatsunoko. The problem is that HG will try to block the release of anything licensed by Big West saying it infringes on their copyright. |

I would say that is too risky. Hollywood Live-Action Movies based off of Anime are not exactly top sellers for not being that great. Even Alita which most people actually enjoyed still flopped in America by only making half of its budget. Did stay within the Top 10 but only really became successful outside America.
Plus Harmony Gold is not exactly someone people want to support. |

I don't think Sony is going to move forward on Robotech until Gundam tests the waters and there's no timeline on Gundam since it's in story development mode for the time being. With Disney literally raping the cinemas with mandatory long-runs of it's films and a long slate of films to be released, it's gonna be hard for anyone to put out something competitive, let alone have much chance of success.

I think whatever interest I had left in anime, this development has all but killed it stone dead.
I need to pick up KOR, and I plan on getting Galaxy Express and City Hunter, but after that, other than filling out my Gundam UC collection, I’m just about done. This is so f**king depressing. |

My interest has been waning for a while tbh, this is just the straw that’s finally broken the camel’s back.
I’m only really interested in 70s through 90s stuff, and most stuff I’d want, I either have or will soon be able to get. Western releases for Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku would be welcome though ![]() What does this renewal mean for the UK and Australian release prospects? |

I'm a little late to this party, but here's my two cents...
Assuming that the aforementioned 35 year license extension on the region block by it staying with Harmony Gold is true; what difference does it REALLY make for "potential" fans in the West and other regions? What I mean is, do you think that maybe people in this thread over exaggerate the brand name of Macross? I wasn't exposed to Macross until I saw one of the feature films "Macross II: Lovers Again" back when it would air on Encore's Action Channel. Watched it, liked it - but didn't give a shit about the series it was centered around/based from. Now let's say, hypothetically, that the 35 year license extension is bogus and by some miracle the region on the Macross IP is lifted and we finally get ALL the Macross content we previously didnt have access to....what next? Are we insinuating that the anime community as a whole will embrace/buy/purchase all the Macross content that's available to us? That's assuming that the newer generation of anime fans of today (ages 8 - 17) EVEN KNOW WHAT MACROSS IS... (spoiler: they don't, a majority of the younger audience don't even know what Robotech is) So considering this fact; what is REALLY to be gained by the Macross series finally going global? It's not like Japan is sitting on the DBZ or Naruto of Mech anime, and it's just WAITING TO CATCH FIRE the second it gets a global release. Harmony Gold's shitty practices aside, I think we're going a little overboard on what Macross means as a brand name in the West. I mean hell, that Reddit thread about Anime Expo 2019 and the 2054 license extension only had a couple dozen replies, it's not like a bazillion would-be Macross fans are UP IN ARMS over this news... People born in the 80's/90's know what Robotech & Macross is based on the limited exposure Macross got and the "nerd" stigmatism surrounding anime culture back then, but everyone OUTSIDE that circumstance or born in the 2000's/2010's generally have no clue what Macross is - nor care about it. The Mech anime genre peaked in the late 2000's anyway. It's all about Isekai, Slice of Life and Fan Service anime now. Don't get me wrong; I'm not shitting on Macross in any way shape or form. But I do think we're being a "little" melodramatic on the impact of what's at stake and the impact Macross as a brand name means to Western anime audiences... |

Diminished brand recognition is an inevitable direct consequence of the HG situation.
Macross is as big as Gundam, yet western audiences wouldn’t necessarily be aware of that because whilst there’s been a constant drip-feeding of new Gundam in the west down the years, HG have blocked out Macross, with the rare exception. Hence, yes, I agree that Macross won’t have the same level of recognition as some of the other great anime franchises, but that doesn’t change the rich catalogue that’s being locked out and would likely be snapped up should it ever become available again. Hard to maintain brand awareness when we’re starved of product. Still interested to understand what the HG license extension means for the UK/Australian trademarks. |
