I'd wait on Kiki as a user is reporting the subtitles are still the old ones that people don't like.

But Pom Poko will be one to get, since there is a plot point Disney would not accurately translate.

The user is mistaken. The dubtitles used are the Streamline dubtitles not the Disney dubtitles that nobody likes. If you think Ghibli's subtitles for Pom Poko are going to translate a plot point that Disney would not accuately translate I think you will be sadly disapointed. I have the Japanese Pom Poko disc and can check for you when I get home.

Regardless of whether they're testicles or pouches or sacks or whatever, they're still dubtitles with text when the characters aren't even speaking.

The report did come from this forum's most ardent dub supporter, so it's quite possible that the concept of operating a BD player's subtitle functionality was foreign to him.

Furthermore there are actually 2 ways around this issue: a simple fix of the audio mix would suffice but many many fans would like to see the 03 dub return which should be the obvious choice for convincing people to purchase their version since Disney left them dissatisfied.

Oh and as a studio attempting to make a major release, you are well within your job description of quality control to go "Oh hey, there's something wrong with the audio you sent us." Whether that's because of a bad mix or because they really dun goofed and sent you a mono source doesn't matter: it kills potential sales.

A minor bad audio glitch in exchange for shutting up Phil Hartman's Jiji is an exchange I would make any day. Gkids should've included the original Streamline English dub if they really wanted to get sales not a worst version of the current dub.

I find it odd that "From up on Poppy Hill" is the only one without a slipcover.
It's like even they couldn't get there hands on one, also "The Tale of the Princess Kaguya" is strangely absent altogether (which coincidently is the only Ghibli film originally released by GKIDS I have that doesn't have a slipcover).

I’m just hoping someone releases the Ghibli collection in Neo Cases! I’m pretty sure I have the collection in every other possible form of packaging!

I don't think it really matters which set of dubtitles they are... One may be better then the other but they are both still not real subs.

To each his own but the audio glitch is far from minor; it's quite noticeable on virtually all of Kiki's lines.

I got it from Amazon on Black Friday that year for $11.99 and it still had a slipcover after nearly 3 months from release, so I don't think it's that it was hard to get when it came out, just that it's hard to find them now since it was the first GKIDS Ghibli title. It's like trying to find a Disney Ponyo slipcover.

It's for this reason that I find myself unable to watch the 2010 edit of the Disney dub. Faithful or not, bad sound quality on a reissue which previously had great sound recording quality is still off-putting. Also, I quite liked Phil Hartman's Jiji. I found his adlibs to be very humorous and they added to the story. I do agree that it would have been a better idea for him NOT to talk to Kiki at the end of the film. That's the one change in the new edition I can agree with. But I absolutely loved his lines, particularly "They're calling you an egg-stealer and you don't wanna know what else!" I was so miffed that they shortened that to "egg-stealer".

As for including the Streamline dub, agreed. That would have been an ideal move. Discotek's BD of Cagliostro practically offered ALL versions of the dub -- the Streamline one, the Manga dub -- two different cuts, one with the cussing, one without. IMO, this is the move that I feel GKids should have taken here. That would have made these movies ideal repurchases.

Also, whether the subtitles are based on the Streamline dub of Kiki or not in the new edition, it still doesn't change the fact that this movie for fans of the Japanese version should have a subtitled track that is literal. Sometimes I love comparing and contrasting the different lines. Yes, even as a dub watcher. (There, I said it!)

Any chance you could take a picture of the back of the slip? I wanna see how these releases look compared to the Disney ones. I've only got Spirited Away preordered but loved Howl's Moving Castle.
