And you know this won’t get addressed. I’m sure their Apartment disc won’t beat Arrow’s faultless transfer if it ends up like this. Honestly just hoping they don’t screw up Touch of Evil. At least not the Reconstructed version.

Absolutely. They are too focused are announcing new titles to focus on getting the ones they have right (I know different departments). Maybe allocate some of the licensing money to better encoders. I'd rather wait awhile for good 4Ks and have them spaced out than be spoiled by great titles back to back at mediocre quality.

I keep getting tempted to take advantage of this but when you tally it all up, in the end it's really hardly a deal at all. For example I added this, Krampus, and Suicide Squad 4k, and after taxes it's about $70, which is still like $23.33 each so only a couple to a few off each film so I can't really justify it. However I just saw that sign up for a red card and get $40 off your next order, wonder if that would work for this, I might try it!

RedCard is worth it no matter what, and you can even get one that’s debit (linked to your bank) without having to do a credit check. That $40 off will work for any order regardless of discounts already applied. And the 5% off every purchase always helps to ease the tax pains. Also, upon successful application you’ll receive your RedCard number to use on your account without having to wait for the physical card.

My purchase of this 4k UHD ended up being $18.80 after tax w/ RedCard. Quite an exceptional deal, and I would presume this to be the best price possible for quite some time.

Wonder if this is another case where the compression will be "fixed" by the Dolby Vision layer, but some of those caps don't look great. It's a shame because underneath it's clearly a really nice restoration.

Kino needs to stop rushing these discs out. We don't need several UHDs per month, space them out a bit and take the time to work on them properly. They're starting to do with 4K UHD what they do for their regular blu-rays, and that's why Kino has so many terrible discs. They snatch up tons of titles, then rush to get them out and as a result a vast majority of them tend to look like crap because they didn't take the time to work on them. They've always put out more titles than they can actually handle. It's been one of their biggest problems as a boutique label.

This is looking Halloween bad to me. What's with the long blurry chunk running underneath the top black bar?? Ew!!
I'm spotting some chroma noise in a couple of those dark shots too. Great master stunted by bad encode work.
Kino's other UHD look fabulous compression wise so idk what's going on here.
Kinda spooky how the bitrates seem to tally with the Shout Halloweens as well, 75 Mb/s-ish average with a massive FEL. As someone said in the Halloween thread, if your FEL is that big despite the main feature having such a high bitrate then something ****y is going on.

Invasion was never a pretty movie. I didn't expect much out of it. I think it's probably as good as we are going to get.

I love the movie but it's not Titanic. No one is going to fund a massive restoration for Invasion for thousands of physical media buyers.

Huh? Weirder more obscure movies get restored with care like every other week at this point. Snatchers is considered a classic

You do realize we're not talking about the (fabulous) restoration, but how it's been badly compressed on disc (which is separate from restoration), right?

have any of you guys heard the term innocent until proven guilty??

Nobody here has seen the actual disc and yet you've completely trashed it based on a few screen caps (which have been misleading numerous times in he past...)

there should be plenty of actual reviews coming in the next week.....

The issue isn't the transfer itself, it's the encoding on the disc. If a new disc came out using the same scan and color grade, but with improved encoding, it would be a massive improvement. Consider Mulholland Dr. as an example: the Criterion and StudioCanal Blu-rays both use the same master as a base, but the StudioCanal disc looks significantly better because it has better encoding.

True, but thing is… the great majority of the caps do show issues in general. Bad grain handling with mild-to-moderate macroblocking and chroma errors. The DV layer might alleviate those issues but not everyone here can play DV, so the issue stands. And it also seems Kino used the same encoding company that compressed the Halloween 4K’s for Shout! which definitely have issues, especially in the HDR10 layer. So the likelihood those caps are the only places where the disc has encoding problems are slim-to-none. And just in general if this had better compression the caps would look better.

Also, there’s been plenty of cases where reviewing sites give ridiculously good scores when the fact is the discs aren’t good. This has happened a bunch with Criterion discs and discs from other labels as well. Most of them didn’t even catch the bad colors of the first 20min of the 4K disc of The Silence of the Lambs, with most, if not all, reviewing sites giving it glowing reviews (not to mention the stereo track wasn’t the original mix but a fold down of the 5.1). So those ‘actual reviews’ can be pretty misleading and inaccurate. I’d take them with a huge bucket of salt.

Discs shouldn’t look good in DV only, they should look good in HDR10. DV should only be there to enhance an already good encode, not to fix encoding errors.

And possibly...likely...those reviews may say this Kino UHD is PERFECT. And many have noticed you can't fix perfect.

I totally understand that... I just think we should give it a chance until we see it.

I'm getting a little confused on this HDR 10/Dolby Vision differences.

Some discs play best on DV versus HDR 10 and vice versa?

From what I've read Pamela Shoops epic nude scene in Halloween 2 gas the glitch on HDR 10 playback but not Dolby Vision?

Not really vice-versa. If the HDR10 layer is fooked, the DV layer might fix some of the issues in the HDR10 layer (and it depends not only on the type of DV layer, but also how much data is in the DV layer). But outside of very rare cases, if the HDR10 layer is good, the DV layer should also look good or better.

And yes, most, if not all, of those Halloween 4K’s from Shout! have moderate to serious issues in HDR10 and the DV layer cleans up a lot of those encoding errors. But again, that shouldn’t be the case where DV is fixing things. There’s a reason why both types of DV layers (MEL and FEL) are called ‘Enhancement Layer’, and not something like ‘fixing layers’ lol.

so the question has to be asked.... if that's the case are some of these anomalies even going to be noticed by most collector's?

And when I say collector's I mean people that buy blu rays so picture quality is important to them....

I thought it looked really good in motion... but will want to hear what others say once they have the disc in hand and are able to see it.
