Are extended cuts and audio remixes considered bad?

No old extras at all. 30 discs are just for movies in 4K and BD. With 1 extras disc for Cannes Reel and reunions.

Pass. Looks like I will just keep my EE BD sets since I still can't get the LOTR UHDs to play all the way through without freezing up.

Its less extras then the DVD and Bluray releases, with forced bluray disc copies in a "4K" set I cant see how they imagine anyone buying this? What does it bring to the table besides packaging and one bonus disc? Boggling.

If I recall correctly, the appendices are part of the digital copies -- at least in iTunes. To me, that's better than a DVD. Regardless, I'm surprised they wouldn't include them in an Ultimate Collector's Edition.

Im bad at math, so its 6 extended's and 6 theatrical films. The extendeds are spread over 2 discs? and its seperate copy for UHD and regular bluray.

So for extended's thats 4 discs per film? and theatrical should be 2 discs per film? but then Im coming at a total of 37 discs, so ehm..?

edit nvm thanks for Jayman3 for the breakdown, hobbit extendeds are on 1 disc for the UHD release, ooh okay. hm wonder what that will do with the bit rate on the regular blus

So the current 4K only box sets can be had for roughly $150 while this one will cost you an extra C note for a 90 minute retrospective that most likely will end up as an iTunes extra. Some bullshit to ruin it all. 😂

Those features are once again absent.

For me they are 99% of the time. There’s always the 1% that has genuine worth but DVD was where these things exploded in popularity - LaserDisc revisions were a neat novelty - and started to get treasured more than the original intent.

Indeed. Boy do I miss New Line Home Entertainment putting out the LotR stuff...WB couldn't care less, and it's depressing.

That price tag isn't as nearly as back breaking as I thought it would be. Should really have remastered the appendices from the EE DVD and included those as well. I pre-ordered but with one "new" bonus disc I'll probably reconsider and just buy the Hobbit set around Black Friday when it's on sale, as I opted against those last December to see what this set would be like.

Yep, it’s odd you’re the first to mention this. It’s far from ideal in an “Ultimate Collector’s Edition”, but at least there is a way to watch those special features. Folks outside North America probably won’t have that option, though.

WB sucks for these poor decisions…

This is disappointing overall. I was hoping The Appendices would all carry over onto BD. It's a good thing I held on to those discs.

Warner is clearly assuming that 99% of everyone potentially interested in this set already owns copies of the appendices. And indeed- between the OG extended DVD sets, the blu-ray trilogy boxes, the Hobbit 3D editions, and the uber gorgeous bookshelf set (yay clearance sales!) I have the full appendices for all 6 films three times over.

Even so, the LOTR extended bonus material is legendary and no set bearing the supposed "ultimate" moniker should be without it. Period.

My condolences to those who held out until now in hopes that this set would be some sort of holy grail release- at least the standard sets are readily available and $30 cheaper than they were last December.
