A modern day folklore/fable set in the remote mountain regions of Iceland. A young, married couple cope with their grief in a strange way. Gorgeous imagery, wonderful performances, and a small, confined scale that works well for the story.

24. The Feast (Gwledd)

Director: Lee Haven Jones
Country: United Kingdom

Another folk horror film, set in the UK using the Welsh language. A young woman hired to assist in a dinner party ends up not working out.

Forgive me if this has already been asked but I'm assuming Minari, Nomadland and The Mauritanian are this year? If The Father is considered for this year then I guess these would be. It feels weird including them though since they were eligible for last year's Globes/Oscars.

People did insist on Nomadland and Minari be included last year, and with both ranking it doesn’t feel particularly fair they could count again. I did argue against it, but the pandemic did mess it up a bit. I think the unwritten rule is if it didn’t feature last year and you can prove it did come out in 2021 it’s allowed.

As for the Oscars, they did extended their deadline for domestic release to the end of Feb, hence why The Father and Judas and the Black Messiah are cropping up this year despite being up for 2020 Oscars (Judas first premieres at Sundance 21 which is really weird). The Mauritanian should definitely count too.

Mauritanian and The Father are eligible, but not the other two.

Ok thanks. I couldn't remember if Nomadland or Minari had been included last year. I just figured if The Father wasn't then those must not have been either.

Here's mine:

1. A Quiet Place Part II
2. The Father
3. CODA
4. Licorice Pizza
5. Plan B
6. Shiva Baby
7. The Novice
8. The Mauritanian
9. Don't Look Up
10. Jungle Cruise
11. Cruella
12. Wrong Turn (2021)
13. Fear Street 1978
14. Zola
15. Spencer
16. Little Fish
17. Titane
18. Mass
19. Séance
20. Luca
21. Till Death
22. Those Who Wish Me Dead
23. The Hating Game
24. Son
25. Summer of 85

Unfortunately I've yet to see The Power of the Dog. I have been waiting for the chance to see it in a theater which should happen either next weekend or the following depending on which theater I drive to. Just seems like it will be better on the big screen.

I'm attempting to get through The Power of the Dog for the 2nd time now.

First time I quit about 30 minutes into it. Getting actively mad at the movie. I'm about an hour in right now, let's see if I finish it this time. For sure won't be breaking my Top 25 at this point. Probably won't even break my Top 100 of last year. Something about this movie just rubs me the wrong way so much.

[Show spoiler]For one, I just hate Cumberbatch regardless, in anything. But him being a complete ******* bully in this makes me hate him even more. I love Jesse Plemons, and him weight-shaming him is annoying. Him making fun of Kodi-Smit McPhee or whatever for making flowers and having a lisp is pissing me off. Jesse Plemons getting married like 48 hours after meeting someone is stupid and rushed and is pissing me off. I really do not understand what anyone sees in this film.

The payoff at the end is worth it. If you can get through it, you’ll see there’s more than meets the eye.

Yeah, if you hate Cumberbatch you'll probably find an appreciation for the third act of the film, lol. I agree the payoff is worth it.

Default well...

...I'm officially done with my list as well...

It's on page three, should anyone car to peruse it.

I tried to include comments/reviews (complete with spoiler tags) on the entire list, but in the end I just didn't have time to cover every film.

Definitely excited and more than a bit curious to view the results...

I finished it!

But ultimately, I still just didn't care about any of it. I get it, I understood it, but it did absolutely nothing for me.

If I wanna watch a Western with Kodi Smit-McPhee...I'd rather just rewatch Slow West.

I could list 20 to 25 movies.
But I feel better just listing the films that I think will stay in my top 25 after viewing more movies from 2021 and just receiving 1 point each.
The list still starts with my favorite and then goes down.

1. Nightmare Alley
2. King Richard
3. Zack Snyder's Justice League
4. CODA
5. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
6. No Time to Die
7. Nobody
8. Freddie Mercury - The Final Act
9. Spider-Man: No Way Home
10. The Green Knight
11. Cruella
12. The Little Things
13. Red Notice
14. Palmer - Glad to see this one on a few other lists.
15. Don't Look Up
16. Wrath of Man

Updated my list with Drive My Car.

My goal for 2022 is to not get so far behind as I did for this year. Still several films I wanted to see for my 2021 list.
