I bought two of these. One to keep sealed. Just curious if this will be the only 4K option we get, and if so, how much it'll appreciate.

Don’t say things like this… I don’t need to psych myself into getting a second copy “just to have as a backup” or something lol

Regardless this will likely be the definitive set to get with English subs due to the packaging alone imo. There could be single disc releases, we'll have to wait and see. Wouldn't be surprised if Minus Color only came with this set, but who knows!

I have the original Japanese set..that's my keepsake..and I did order one of the new sets too. If the new release is the same audio video as the Japanese version..you're going to love it.

I can’t wait, the 4K streaming on Apple was pretty damn impressive. So I can’t wait to watch this disc with DV in September. it was a pretty expensive day ordering this and The Hitcher but well worth it.

Still haven't watched Minus Color yet. Will the new set have English subs for it or is that just for the 4k? I really want to get to it as soon it comes in. I have a decent backlog to move through first so a September release works for me.

The UHD, BD and Minus Color versions all have English subs. The bonus disc is the only part of the set that does not.

I'm a true Godzilla fan. I was four years old. Got up to change the channel. I don't remember what movie it was. They played a marathon that day. Godzilla 1985 trailers aired during every commercial break. The first Godzilla movie I bought was Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla. Then when Godzilla 1985 came to vhs I bought out. Cried at the ending. I'm sorry for rambling. What I meant to say was, I thought they would include the English dub. It looks awesome! I had to buy it. I'm just not sure if I'm ever going to open it. Watching it in Japanese doesn't ruin it to me. I went to see this in theaters. I'd just rather have an English dub. My guess is it'll come out later from another distributor around Christmas. So, I'll have to buy it again! I guess this is how we tell everyone, physical media can't die! Just like Godzilla!

The English dub appears to have been commissioned by Netflix and they therefore own it. While there's nothing that could stop Toho from producing their own dub for the film, you'd think they would have already done so for this release. I'm guessing the consensus is that most people are open to subtitles these days, and dubs are so often regarded with disrespect, though it is a shame that the added accessibility of having a dub (so all true fans can enjoy their own way) isn't brought into consideration more.

As it has been said before, Toho wants to handle this film's North America distribution themselves. There may be some third party distributors handling it in other countries but they will have the same restrictions from Toho regarding what's on the disc.

This is pretty obscenely expensive, but eh, physical media in Japan has always cost way more than in the US, so it's not really surprising if it's being sold direct by a Japanese company. Like, when I went to Japan in late 2018, I saw all those (by that point) old, crummy, single disc blu-rays of the Godzilla series being sold for extravagant amounts. Looking at a photo with some visible prices, the 3 disc blu-ray of Shin Godzilla was 6800 yen (about 70 dollars), Godzilla's revenge was 4700, and Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla was on sale for 2500. So, this price is right in line with that Shin Godzilla set, which wasn't even a 4K.

TBF there are cases where gatekeeping is needed like with people saying stuff like "Minus One felt like a Japanese movie dressed up in a good western movie's clothes".

What is this supposed to even mean? Does it even have anything to do with the English dub?

Both, I suppose. I don't understand the criticism or why any gatekeeping would be warranted.

The gatekeeping I think would be warranted in the case of someone saying that since it's pretty clear people like the one I brought up don't actually care about something like Minus One and just using it to push their own banal views.

Not saying hard 200% Gatekeeping is a good thing but if you ask me, the whole blanket "erm no gatekeeping" lax view is how the toxic part of fandoms for Star Wars and Marvel were able to thrive and take over so many parts of discussion for them.
