Hate to play the devils advocate here, but I do not think the problem will go away. For every one person who stops these remarks, there are another one who joins the ranks to take his place. It is sad, but i think with the situation of the world right now, there is no end in sight. It is something that we wil have to live among and do our best to not take offense and to report it and handle it the best we can. We still need to do our part to keep it clean, but, that will not solve the issue.

No... it will get better over time.... the only question is how much time. Think about the ways it was socially acceptable to talk to women 100 years ago. Think about the ways it was socially acceptable to talk to black people 60 years ago. In time.... it will no longer be socially acceptable to treat gay people badly. When that time comes.... people will still do it... just as people still treat women and minorities badly...... but it will be much less.

It's human nature. The homophobes are in the spotlight like racists used to be. Not that racism is a non-issue, but as was said it is less public now. It will be something new after this. You can get a group of white Americans with bonde hair and blue eyes together and they will FIND a way to alienate SOMEONE. If only 1 person happens to be wearing green, that will be all it'll take. Because green will suddenly be for wusses.

The situation is not unresolvable. It just flames out of control because these companies are currently doing nothing at all about it. But it is possible to keep the situation under control. There are lots of examples of services out there which do so successfully.

To be sure, this kind of thing can never be squashed completely. But it can be reduced to the level of being a rare occurance.

Companies can apply administrators and/or give users tools to police their own. And these are effective solutions that help a great deal.

What I'd like to see Sony implement is a system which tracks the 'bad reputation' score of users. Each time someone gets banned or there's a complaint, increase their score. Sure, everyone will get some dings because jerks will try to ban nice people to try to game the system. But that effect can be reduced by techniques like lowering the effects of a complaint by someone who is themselves marked as being very bad (or is marked bad in the future) or who has a new account.

It should be possible to reasonably produce this score which is then a consensus of what other players have had to say about this player.

And then what you do is use this 'bad reputation' score as a player tool. Let everyone set their own preferences on what to do with it. I want to be able to set my console to automatically mute anyone with a bad reputation score above X so that I don't have to hear their crap and then mute them myself. And everybody can decide what their own threshold is.

That would be an example of an automated tool which gives players their own power to control their online experience.

It seems to me that we're making the same points over and over. But I think it's safe to say that you've probably effected a few people, and that somebody that read your words before will think twice before saying something offensive. I don't mean everybody, but somebody

Well if everyone had their tag floating above their avatar and when speaking it'd
change color from whatever to yellow, red or a color that you knew who was saying what then reporting becomes much easier as does muting.

This is also a good reason to find people to put in the friends section and play
with them for better results.
