Wow that is really interesting! I'd be curious to know about the workings of that deal.

But Benjamin Button is definitely deserving of some awesome special features, and I'm sure Criterion will deliver.

That seems odd cause Criterion already announced their May and June releases... so I think this is false info... doesn't make any sense.

I guess we'll see if it happens. I just can't imagine they'd release a standard Blu ray release and then a special 2 Disc Criterion BD release.

It would be interesting if they release it, under the radar it would be sort of a surprise I am sure their cover art would be better.

Well..... watched this last night.... what a visual treat! I loved the story, and like the fact that it's open to much speculation as far as motivations and what-not........

Put me down for this on my wish-list for a Blu release now!!!!!

oh nice you finally saw it....terrence malick's cinematography is always incredible. i've heard the criterion upscaled dvd looks ALMOST as good as true HD since the transfer is so amazing (but i can't attest to that since i haven't seen it myself)

My only regret..... was the fact that we watched it in our living room, which has the most meager 3.0 setup..... I didn't even bother looking at what audio was on the disk.... probably 5.1 DD ? either way.... it was a great film.

If Paramount is indeed calling the Benjamin Button release a "Criterion Edition", it doesn't mean that it's going to be a part of the Criterion Collection. "Criterion" is just a word. And at least it's not the "Old Baby" edition.

The missing spine number might be just for a boxset combining the Seventh Seal and Bergman Island releases -- the latter is an extra on BD, and possibly the new DVD too, but why then release it as a separate title? Anyhow, Paramount is releasing Button, so it's certainly not that.

Ccfixx, thanks for the preorder links!

I just find that hard to believe. Sure it's a word, but it's also a company name, and to release a DVD and call it a very well-known home video companies name would be kind of ridiculous. Criterion would probably have ground for a lawsuit in that case.

I doubt legal action would occur since they just got in with Paramount for releases like Days of Heaven and Ace in the Hole... I am hoping they will eventually get to release a BD of DON'T LOOK NOW from Paramount. It deserves special edition treatment in the U.S.

Now that I've gone and read the actual press release, I'm ambivalent. It could be that the DVD SE and BD releases of Button will be handled via Criterion, who now have an ongoing relationship with Paramount. And it could portend things to come -- Criterion editions of Fincher's earlier works, which is why they might be trying to establish a precedent here.

Button is a film that might be less than the sum of its parts, but I find it immensely watchable, and it certainly wouldn't be out of its depth in CC. Well; let's wait for the official press release and see how it all plays out.

I wouldn't mind getting three Criterion Blus a month, after all.

Well, then. They just need to add the director's name below the image as per their mission statement, and we're set.

For some odd reason none of the advertising really pointed out this was a David Fincher film... none of that from the Director of ______ type deal at all. I would guess for a mainstream film like this no use adding the Dir name those who care already know or something like that.

A lot of people who have never heard of Criterion .. this may be their first Criterion release on BD. Should be interesting to see if some more major stores will stock the BD then... BEST BUY etc... Best Buy has yet to stock one Criterion BD that I have seen.

Criterion is sometimes able to release special editions of films day/ date for home video release... doesn't happen often ... but they worked with Disney over several Wes Anderson films for release on DVD as they came out.

Personally I feel Zodiac was 300 billion times a better film than Benj. is.. but it isn't bad just kinda all about timing esp for awards season etc.
