Personally I don't like Ebay auctions much at all. Most are not correctly executed by the bidders. It's not a live auction at all, where everyone is in the room and present. Most watchers are not paying attention, come back to listing, and kick themselves for not bidding because they didn't realize it would end at such a low price.

That makes no sense, and is not a fair representation of the value of that item.

I've won some auctions by being the highest bidder (from a previously place high bid) and felt bad about the end price. Now, if I win something at too low a price, I will message the seller and tell them that I can pay more. Seriously.

Just remember... you might have gotten a great deal, but it's not a company. It's a person on the other end that has to package up that "great deal" for you. Personally I don't think anybody wins there. Buy it now price is better imo.

I agree. People don't actually enter in their Highest Bid, like eBay suggests they do. They just keep bumping the bid until they are the highest bidder and leave it there. If you're willing to pay $60 on something, make that your highest bid and don't try to snipe a win at the end.

It's the risk you take in an auction environment Jimmy. I've had things go for less than I wanted but I was just glad to get something back, and for someone else to enjoy it If you honestly message a seller and offer them more for the item you won then you're very thoughtful I hope you buy my next steel that goes for under market value!

There's little worse than putting a prized item out and "risking" it on the Ebay auction platform, seeing 37 watchers and feeling confident that it's getting the attention it deserves to be bid on correctly, then watching the auction end at way below cost just because people were out to lunch and didn't realize they were letting it go for too low. I remember one time back in the day letting an Iron Man 2 Play.com steelbook go for $31. My bid was $30 and I forgot to make a higher bid. $31 won it. I should have placed my true highest bid, which would have been much higher.

But EVEN STILL... check this out.... even still... my highest bid would have pushed it to like $32 or whatever.

Every now and then. auctions drive the price higher than it should, for whatever reason. Panic bidding, or something.

But 90+% of the time, auctions suck for the seller, and also I think (in the end) for the buyer. They misrepresent what the steelbook value is seen as. And if we are collecting these mamma jammas, I'd rather they hold their perceived value well. Even if I never intend to sell certain ones, it still makes it more fun if I am able to believe they are worth more than what I paid.

But ebay even reminds you not to set your auction's starting price for less than you're willing to let it go for when you create the listing. If I'm going to sell something, I'm going to price it so I break even, I'm not going to pay 1 of 37 watchers to buy it from me. If I at least get my money's worth back, I'm happy.

auctions are awesome as ive got loads of stuff below what they should be. sucks for sellers. good for buyers.

if you are that worried about not making enough dont put it on auctions and stick to buy it nows and hope someone comes along and pays your price.

i think the majority of people snipe the auction. wait till last 10 seconds

Sorry, but eBay auctions (and auctions in general) are not set up exclusively for the benefit of the seller. Part of the auction process is the potential on the buyers part to buy something for less than what you might have paid elsewhere. I can't remember exactly, but I don't think £52 was all THAT off from what the original buyer would have paid for those steels. There are all kinds of mechanisms in place for the seller to protect their sale (setting a reserve, providing a "buy it now" price), but some people think selling without those safety nets drives up interest, thus driving up their price. It's a gamble/strategy that if they're willing to take to help drive up the bids they have to acknowledge they might not always win with. I'm just baffled by the sulking because you think the buyers are the ones ruining the auction and that it exists only to benefit the sellers. Even in a live auction, no buyer is hoping the room is chock full of people that want to bid so they can see what the item they want is REALLY worth. They're hoping to get to bid/win without competition. You fundamentally misunderstand the auction process.
