Battle of Algiers!!

Hell, yes! Finally!

All look good to me, especially The Killing and Cul-de-Sac.

Like the new additions to the collection. But, man, there are so many upgrades I want to see on blu...

I would love to see Criterion go on a tear and upgrade Hitchcock, all the Bergman films, all the Soviet Union films (especially the Cranes are Flying), Picnic at Hanging Rock, Le Samourai, Rushmore, The Burmese Harp, The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, etc, etc

But I digress....great month!

You can also stream Fear and Desire on Lovefilm (the UK Netflx) if you have an account. I quite liked it.

More to come ?
The Kubrick ones, in "Killing"'s case, are thoroughly justified.

Obligatory Wes fanboys, however, are as inevitable as the 90's-geezer "Gee, I wish studios would turn back the clock to 1997, not be interested in releasing their own DVD's, and let Criterion make all their mainstream MGM and Michael Bay/David Fincher DVD's for them!"
We must accept the consequences of Widespread Greed, as the technology became common--MGM catalog aside, it's Janus Films, or you go hungry.

(And as for those who "haven't seen" them yet?--Treat them with pity. Tease them just enough to make them interested. Make them think renting the movie is their OWN idea. )

You're awesome (just for putting Fincher in his place with Anderson and Bay first of all.) People yelling out and waiting for Fincher's The Game to be re-released on Criterion and films like Carlos is a downer by just looking at the truly wonderful, first time on R1 releases of worldwide and time films they have been giving us the last 3 months (Vigo set, People on Sunday, The Music Room, etc) and just to think instead of "epics" (I guess because it's long) like Carlos we COULD get epics like OUT 1 (with news of a release today I believe in Germany. 1st time ever on dvd).). It's like you said, widespread Greed, and more-so "I want my fav popular, already released, movies released by this Criterion place that makes cool covers and tons of extras!". Some could say people like me are the same, but I say this to those people: I know where to get Fincher's The Game. Tell me where I can get some Rivette. Or better yet, who can release Rivette? Warner Bros? Lionsgate? Walmart bins? Or Criterion?

And by the way, everytime I seem to be done (throw my hands up) with Criterion (have been going away from them early this year with the releases they were announcing) they have pulled me back in with these past 3 months. Let's keep it up C!

Yes. They are working on a blu-ray. Some say maybe even a new print run in cinemas before a blu release.

Why would we possibly need Criterion to release OUT 1 when it is coming out in Germany?

Nah, just more emo bellyaching for the sake of it. CC has been doing a pretty nice job mixing it up lately, which I think is to their credit.

I couldn't give two figs if The Game came out, but it isn't going to make anything else come out noticeably faster or slower one way or the other.

I wonder about that too sometimes. Obviously their resources aren't unlimited but I wonder where their bottlenecks really are.

The short story was that they were pissing off kubrick in the late 80s with screenings, and he got Scorcese (who's working with the archive) to put a stop to them, rather bluntly. They're loosening up again and they didn't rule out an actual release of some type, but were also very evasive with an answer.
Then I was mistaken. How did the restored version look? I just found out it's 72 minutes, so maybe a standalone release could work, with the additional supplements, of course.

Nice list for July but thank you nothing for me my wallet can rest a bit.

Now can you guys please do me a favor next month? Stop predicting Tokyo Story, every month now for the last 3 or 5 months, it's predicted and it never happen. So maybe if you don't predict it will come out?

I've seen Fincher's THE GAME. While it's a good film I'm not sure it'll hold up with repeat viewings (Much like Nolan's films produce diminishing returns on subsequent viewings). I suspect it may be a sort of novelty film. Anyone that's seen it may agree with me here (or not).

#funnyfact when you arrange the Criterion blu-rays on their site by title "The 400 Blows" comes BEFORE "81/2".
uhh, last time I checked 8.5 comes before 400.

Yes, but their arrangement starts with the first character, not the whole of the characters. In this case, the number "4" comes before the number "8" so 400 comes before 8-1/2. It is true that the numerical value of 8-1/2 is less than 400, but that is not how their alpha-numeric listing is set-up.

yeah generally in ABC listings the lower numbers come first.
they just need to change the way there's is set up.
it's no biggie; I just noticed it yesterday when browsing.

I think not too long ago Criterion acknowledged people want to see Rivette and they said it's in the works.

I rec'd my amazon order of Diabolique, Pale Flower and both had box cuts across the spine. So I already issued my return / replacement with amazon.

My Twilight Zone Season 4 Slipcover was banged up too. Kind of annoyed.

Uhm, because the film is French and a release in Germany doesn't mean "English subtitles" ?

Anyway, it would be awesome to have this one, even on DVD. Same goes to L'Amour Fou (which i think is even harder to happen).
