The Serious Man(Netflix Rental)

Film: 3/5

So, I finally got around to watching this and I just did not get into it. I was surprised because I tend to really like the Coen Bros films. It wasn't bad it just didn't do anything for me.

The Road

Movie 4.5/5

Wow this film is almost perfect. Driven with a lot of emotion and deep thinking. I really like how the movie delivered, it was really deep. On a second note i dont think is was better than the hurt locker overall but the emotional part surpassed the hurt locker by a mile. Very great film HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I totally agree with you on this one. Some on the other thread don't care for this movie much because it leaves out the apocalyptic part of the story. Personally, I don't thing that special effects driven part is necessary for the substance of the story to work. This film reminded me of a similar picture done much earlier called the Testament with Jane Alexander. That film took place after a nuclear war but they didn't show that part at all. What was more important in that film, as it was in this film, is how the characters dealt with what was left after the event. Love the acting in this just like I enjoyed the acting in the previously mentioned film. This film clearly was intended to affect one emotionally or at least it did for me. I can't comment on the Hurt Locker yet because I haven't seen that film.

I don't get what you mean? It's page for page from the book. What apocalyptic part?

The Prince of Persia - 10/10 I absolutely loved it, the trailers before it get a 1000/10, The Last Airbender, TRON Legacy, The Sorceror's Apprentice (which I thought would be awful, awesome trailer, it's Nic Cage bduh it's gonna be good), and INCEPTION which is giving me a deep feeling that it might dissapoint me.....

What I meant to say and I guess I didn't make that clear is that there have been others who have posted on the main thread (for this film) who believe that the apocalyptic reason for this story should have been included. I didn't read the book and don't claim to know it at all. I was just saying that this aspect wasn't necessary to have a good post-apocalyptic story. That's why I mentioned the TESTAMENT as a comparison piece.

We Were Soldiers

Movie 5/5

OMG, Never in my life have i watched a drama action war movie of this caliber!!! This movie is SOOOOO Underrated. I know there are alot of Saving Private Ryan fans but this movie is heart, and breathtaking. PERFECT in every way. Black Hawk Down held my heart for a while but this MASTERPEICE has just taken its spot. I freakin cried during this movie, I NEVER CRY, EVER!!!!! What war movie shows officers that get down dirty with their men. EPIC.

"I will be the first to step on the battle field and the Last to step off, and i will leave NO ONE behind"

I dont wanna keep talking about We Were Soldiers but come on, I cant believe some of the ratings for this movie. Minus the PQ and AQ this movie is perfect. I dont understand how Saving Private Ryan even compares to the Epic War Movie.

I dont care about that part either, if people want to see the action part just go watch 2012, I am Legend or whatever. The movie was about surviving after man kind lost all morals

I just finished watch U-571 for the first time on BD and all I can say is "WOW" about the sound quality. What a great test for my 2 subs. I wish they would release Das Boat and The Enemy Below on BD; two of my other favorite submarine movies. Also, I smiled when they mentioned the capture of the U-505 at the end of the movie; you can tour it at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

Movie: 4/5 PQ: 4/5 SQ: 5/5

I love we were soldiers and all, but nothing in that film holds a candle to Giovanni's scene on the hill in saving private Ryan. If you didn't get misty eyed during that scene... You've got some resolve man.

THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL(1978) is not available in the U.S. but is available as a UK release. Had a little trouble playing this one even though it is supposed to be Region Free. Had to use the chapter selection in the menu and then it played fine. This film is not as good as [Marathon Man[/B] but not bad, considering it has Gregory Peck, Sir Laurence Olivier (who plays someone similar to Simon Wiesenthal) and James Mason. Also look for a very young Steve Guttenberg. The music score was really good since it was done by Jerry Goldsmith who was nominated for a Best Original Music score Oscar. According to IMdB, "Gregory Peck felt that his portrayal of Nazi war criminal Dr. Josef Mengele was the only completely unsympathetic role he ever performed." This film is listed in my The Overlook Film Encyclopedia: Science Fiction so I just had to add it to my SciFi collection. MUST OWN FOR SCIFI COMPLETEST.

Movie: 3.5/5 (Marathon Man much higher) PQ: 3.5/5 AQ: 4/5

The Machinist

Movie: 4/5 Very disturbing and draining. I felt somewhat depressed after it was over, very far from a feel good movie. However, it is beautifully crafted, I enjoyed it thoroughly. Highly recommended.

PQ/AQ: 4/5 Looked and sounded quite good. The picture won't show off the best your HD TV has to offer as it is a very dark film, but it looks great nonetheless. Sounds fantastic as well.

Apocalypto

Film: 4/5
-great direction! how did Gibson manage to position those cameras within that dense jungle the way he did and move them around?
-great story: I'm not Mayan history expert but watched it tonight with a buddy who is born and raised in Mexico and is versed in Mayan/Aztec history and said the film was shockingly accurate. I had already expected this, as I knew Gibson had done his research.
-LOVED the theme of destiny/karma/etc:
[Show spoiler]the scene with the little girl is jaw-dropping-good, sending chills up my spine, as she tells the Raiders how they will die. Their "cruel acts" have destined them to death at the hands of the jaguar, among other jungle booby traps. THe other theme is the intro quote of "a society can't be destroyed from without until it has destroyed itself from within." I guess the Mayan culture was fractured with the slave trade that caused a constant uprooting of villages and murdering of people, for profit, and thus the culture could never form a unified front against the Spanish when they landed

-One thing struck me as I watched this:
[Show spoiler]we see slaves getting sold in a marketplace, for profit, to be killed in a public forum, to please the mob....sound familiar??? Rome anyone?? Isn't it amazing how two cultures (Mayan, Romans), entirely disconnected, can engage in the exact same slave trade, for pretty much the same purpose. Just goes to show how human weakness is universal

PQ: 5/5

AQ: 4.5/5

agree on all counts. I also gave it 4's down the line! Can't believe Bale went from 200 down to 135 for this role, eating only an apple and drinking coffee each day!

Then back up to 220 for Batman Begins...then down a little more since he 'over bulked'

I still haven't seen the movie yet though. I tried to rent it from my movie rental store just before they closed, but they were only selling at that point and not renting

I'll see it one day eventually, as a friend of mine has it, but its not high up on my priority list. Maybe sometime before the summer is over.

Just buy it, it's only $12 on Amazon and it seems to be liked by critics.
