Barbie - 6/10
Enjoyed it but didn't love it. There was some decent humor and clever 'wink wink' moments but there was just too much going on in terms of what the movie was trying to say, so it felt very unfocused and as a result glossed over some of the other characters and themes that weren't Robbie/Gosling and patriarchy/toxic masculinity. Speaking of the social criticism, by the second act it felt way too preachy and on the nose, you could practically feel the "pause for applause' moments, but a fun last 20 minutes makes you forget some of the eye-rolling groan-fest by the time the credits come. Great production design and performances, though the rest feels like a missed opportunity. Oppenheimer - 8/10 Pretty spectacular filmmaking, even if a little convoluted. Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr disappear into their roles and I hope both get recognition for that. The pace was relentless and honestly exhausting in a good way, that scene at about the halfway point blew me away. This won't be for everyone. It is essentially a 3-hour courtroom drama with the signature Nolan style. If you are someone that isn't interested in the material or find it grating to try to keep up with 100-mile-per-hour mumbled dialogue between about 50 different characters while very loud violins swell without pause, you will probably struggle to get anything out of it. For those Nolan fans who find this part of history fascinating, I can't see you not, at the very least, appreciating what it achieves. Last edited by Lavochkn; 07-23-2023 at 03:45 AM. |

TALK TO ME time
10am session 2nd best screen here at regional cinema Was going to post only person here. but 1 other has arrived EDIT - post film evaluation. There's an 'annoying' actor/character - that i couldn't figure out where it was male or female. Having seen the twins/directors on The Project a few times - I was hoping for something.... but it really didn't generate. I'm not that old and use technology far more than most - but the focus on mobile phones / cameras for many scenes comes off as almost juvenile. The 'party' scenes : again, designed to target a US audience. There were annoying 'characters' in this - hence there's nothing really to grab you. Hope next time these twins can develop a story/plot/script and try for something more emotional in a thriller. 4/10 https://www.blu-ray.com/Talk-to-Me/1649377/#Review (the 1st image shows that : is it a he or she or whatever) Last edited by shireguy; 07-29-2023 at 02:36 AM. |

2nd half of BARBENHEIMER seen.... the better and longer half.
Almost 3hrs of non stop talking. A character study... sorry characters as Oppenheimer is just one half of this story. Is this an epic ?? Unlike Nolan's past films, there's little in the way of 'epic' scenes, though the number of actors that have featured is quite high (almost to Lean-like). And did I mention talking. The section with Casey Afleck is probably one of the most wordy, twisted, and somewhat hard to follow (more so when you concentrate on how this group of actors has 'aged' (well it happens to all of us - even noticing the missing bottom tooth with Matt Damon !) it's interesting to note that the USofA is still dealing with it's 'demons' way after this period - and that the big bad 'communism' word is still being pulled out to FEAR a gullible country. A good film - but not something that I will revisit for a long time. and better than that other pink film 7.5/10 |

I'm only going to see The Miracle Club only because Maggie Smith is in it. I've seen the trailer once and it looked terrible plus I read a review a couple of months back in The Hollywood Reporter that crucified the film so both of things have dampened my interest in the film.

Not sure why, but I saw The Meg 2: The Trench
I mean, I did actually enjoy the first one, but everything I liked about it is gone here. That this thing had 3 writers and that this was the best they could come up with is pretty amazing. I suspect most of the CGI budget was spent creating an ocean spray effect so that you can't actually see anything else. Suspension of disbelief needs to be set to 11. |

How to Blow Up a Pipeline - 7/10
Really good. A tightly made, well acted little film with some real edge of your seat stuff. Also lights a bit of a fire under you with recent events around the world and how relevant the topic is. That said, I wish more care had been put in with the character work - at times it felt a little like it was just ticking the "here is their motivation" checkbox while not really doing enough to develop the emotional core required to stick the landing. These parts of the film were really well edited and I liked the structure of it overall, just needed that little bit more. Asteroid City - 8/10 The more I think about it, the more I like it. I loved the first viewing and I feel an urge to see it again very soon. Great cast, great visuals and some really funny moments wrapped up in a well told story. If you're looking for that classic Wes style, it's here in bucket loads, but this film felt different. There was something more to it and it addressed some really deep subjects in my opinion. Again, I think my rating of this will likely go up upon rewatch. It felt like all of his previous movies led to this, I can't quite explain it. Had a blast. |
