So where do these come from when they have been OOS for months?
They just came back from the Blacksmithy and had all the dents pounded out and spine slashes filed away.

Bit of pricey day today. Ordered Reservoir Dogs, Evil Dead 2, Indiana Jones KotCS, and Army of Darkness. Because of this, I decided to cancel preorders for The Last Stand and Day of the Dead. I can only get so much unfortunately.

Plus I bought The Pianist lenticular from Kimchi since it came back in stock.

After all of the damaged returns arrive? Otherwise, never... technically. Restocking would involve getting more created. And that just doesn't happen after release date. The manufacturer would require them to order 4,000 more at minimum in order to fulfill any order. So, after release date, if sold out, the only way they can "restock" is using damaged returns (in hopes to punt them off on less OCD customers) or finding stock that got lost and stuffed behind a big box somewhere where it shouldn't be. Either way, it is impossible to declare any form of discernible schedule for this "restocking" that you speak of.

I almost always reread my post immediately after posting. The iPhone keyboard is possessed most of the time. No matter how careful I am, there is always at least 1 rogue character in there somewhere.

I laughed when I read that though because I actually pronounced it in my head as it was written. Sounded very hillbilly.

Oh damn. So the Wicker Man and Reservoir Dogs steelbooks I just ordered are going to be damaged/returned copies?

Are you folk sure about this?

I'm off to talk to Zavvi, then, because if they're going to be even lightly damaged before they're sent, I don't want 'em.

I was just joking with my post. I have no idea if these are damaged/returned items.

Sometimes the studios actually have extra buffer stock leftover, and small amounts of a title can turn up that way. Wreck at HDN says that is the case with these recent resurrections.

I was only half joking. Don't freak out just yet.

Nobody knows for sure where these "magical stock items" come from aside from those running the show at Zavvi headquarters. However, given the nature of the process for these types of releases (steelbooks), it's a logical argument that they could be using "lightly" damaged product in hopes to catch the less OCD customers with them.

And I don't fully believe the "studios might have extra stock lying around" theory. Since 99% of the time the studios are only involved to the extent of approving artwork and have nothing to do with the physical product otherwise. So, the conspiracy theorist in me is telling me that Wreck is getting some smoke blown up his ass in order to soften the public opinion/response to this mysterious wave of stock that appears out of thin air randomly. He doesn't sit in the Zavvi boardroom, and they know that he is the voice of the people. So...

Ha, you got me then.

It's just that, like you, I'm on a different side of the planet from Zavvi, and I don't want to be sent a copy that I'm only going to have to return.

I was hoping that would be how it happened. As regards the Wicker Man, I had an e.mail from Zavvi a couple of weeks back saying they were trying to get new stock, but I guess you never know what's up-front and what's marketing-speak.

No freaking here, in any direction.

Just that this is the first time I've been able to order something that came back into stock, and if it's going to be something that I don't want (i.e. damaged), I'd rather know and head it off before it travels halfway round the world and I have to pay to send it back. Or maybe Zavvi figures that "slight" damage is part of the deal, since they're not charging the nominal full price on these. Who knows?

Anyway, I've sent Zavvi an e.mail — nothing rude, just asking — to see if I can get a definitive answer on these and where they came from.

Expect either a generic blanket e-mail response, or something from someone who doesn't know where they came from but is told to tell you what they want you to hear. That's big business for ya.

You won't have an answer until the item is in your hands. That's part of the gamble that is steelbook collecting. Even ordering brand new releases is risky.

Evil dead remake was perfect. Nothing wrong with the one I got. So must have been down the back of someone's sofa or something.

Anybody whined about the new packaging in here yet? If not let me be the first.
