Looks terrible. Call me cynical but I'm a sucker for a traditional old fashioned screen or an IMAX screen at best. Anything else seems too gimmicky (e.g. 4D, D-box)

Barco Escape isn't even something that takes place throughout the movie. The Cinemark website says Star Trek has 20 minutes of "special enhanced footage." Someone who saw Maze Runner this way said there was only 7 minutes. Otherwise those side screens are off for the vast majority of the movie.

Damn, that trailer looks good. I'm totally pumped for this.

Plan on going a week after it opens. I go so few times a year, I like to see a couple movies when I do actually get to the theater. And Nerve opens on the 27th, and although it looks sort of ... light ... it also looks fun. And I love Emma Roberts. So, I'll go see it and ST:B on the same night.

If nothing else, it will be action-packed few hours.

I walked away from the Ghostbusters thread, don't plan on going back. I was going to see it this weekend when I had some extra money but sorry guys THIS movie looks awesome I can get excited for this, Ghostbusters reboot will have to wait. Open the poll already I want to rate this 5 stars just based on the trailer alone!

I don't have cable so I can't comment on the advertising on TV but I did see previews for this before Star Wars and Batman earlier in the year.

There was no political commentary in II. It wasn't even Moby Dick (man against nature). It was a low budget action adventure with a MacGuffin (Genesis Device), worms that burrow into your ears and space battles.

They were talking about the movies/episodes themselves not about how they were advertised.

No, but there were a lot of literary references, alluding to themes of aging and rebirth. There was a frank discussion about the Genesis wave and the ethical and moral dilemma's it presents. The consequences of Kirk's cheating death in his simulation as a student making it far more difficult for him to accept loss as an adult... It's a much smarter and more philosophical (if not political, as you say) film. Much more in keeping with the original series, which was equal parts thrills and big ideas.

Yep, it may not make any massively profound remarks in terms of socio-political commentary (though Meyer would make up for that massively in both IV and VI) aside from a vague 'science vs military' undercurrent, but the literary allusions are plentiful as befits Meyer's own sensibilities, and they along with Kirk's struggle with ageing lift it way above the simple action fodder that people are claiming it to be. Throwing Khan under the bus just to prove the worth of the nuTrek films (well, one in particular ) is what's "desperate" here, but that's human nature in action I guess.

Take the action out of Trek 2 and 6 and the humor out of 4 and you have 3 flops.
Trek 1 tried to be cerbral and was a crashing bore.
A pretty, great sounding, crashing bore.

I love TMP. Clearly I'd better turn in my Trekkie credentials for preferring it over STID! What has the nerd world come to?

[edit] Do you do that with every film Bolty? Deduct the most fundamental elements of their makeup and declare them "flops" on the back of that, not what they actually are? "Take the humour out of Airplane! and what have you got: nothing!" Christ on a bike.

I just hope we all enjoy the shit out of Beyond, then that might help put an end to this "my Trek's better than yours" bullshit.
