No, I wouldn't have, stop putting words in my mouth or telling me how I'm supposed to feel. That's very patronizing.
Oh, yes. You absolutely would have.

Being a condescending hypocrite does not make your argument right. It just makes you a condescending hypocrite who is patronizing the casting of the movie while telling others not to patronize him.

Wow...just what I wanted in a Godzilla movie. Sure there were a few bumps but it was no different from any Godzilla movie since 1954. 4.5/5 rounded up to 5 for the poll (not because it's perfect but it's exactly what I was hoping for).

It's mostly because of the messed up science in the 1998 film, since the creature laid eggs (yet it's still considered male in the film). That in addition to movies like Son of Godzilla - people assume Godzilla laid the egg Minya hatched from. Of course, all of the confusion comes from people who never actually watched the movies.

When Shin Godzilla was released, a independent movie distributor was falsely boasting that they had gotten US rights for the film and declared to fans that "She is coming soon!".

Some of the people who worked on the original films state that Godzilla is female in some of them - however when you line the continuities up, there isn't really any place for that to be true. Unless they've retcon things, like how the new mobile game Godzilla Defense Force claims Hedorah from the 1971 film is female while the one in Final Wars is male.
Cool. Thanks for those details. I forgot about Godzilla 2000 being female, but more like a giant Dinosaur laying little raptors, but still female.

And yes, Son of Godzilla. I saw him as father Godzilla, so that's surprising that some thought he was a mother.

Can't wait to check this film out this weekend in 3D.

That was a pretty disappointing movie. Once again they make a Godzilla movie where Godzilla is hardly in it! Way way too much focus on humans whose stories were uninteresting. Again they refused to stay focused on a monster battle for any period of time always panning away or putting obstructed views in play. Biggest disappointment of 2019.

Completely agree! I HATED this, more than anything else I’ve seen so far this year. The gorgeous trailers were a complete lie! I rewatched 2014 Godzilla and Gareth Edward’s direction in that film is so good with an epic sense of scale and majesty to the creatures with nice slow long shots. This movie was so unspeakably dark and ugly, and with close ups and shaky cam to boot! And yes, every time a titan fight would happen and you thought you would see something cool, wrong! They cut back to people screaming and the camera shaking and bright flashes and strobes giving me a migraine. And the dialogue was just wretched. I enjoy Pacific Rim and loved both Jurassic World films so it is not that this kind of film does not appeal to me. I expect cheese and nonsense, but for the love of all that is holy, at least make the fights epic and coherent!

The trailers definitely were a classic case of misdirection. Also, I think they used almost all the footage of monsters fighting, when I saw the movie there wasn't much that hadn't been shown in the previews.

You should be happy that Godzilla is colored. Now colored children can aspire to be monsters when they grow up.

Well this weekend might be going the way of Pacific Rim Uprising

Hearing from a source this only did 19M today and might open sub 50M with a chance for Aladdin to repeat at #1. Hope they are very very wrong.

Uprising made $60m in its entire US run. This will make about that (maybe more) in its first US weekend.

It doesn't matter anyway. This film and KKvG aren't going anywhere. Maybe they end this series after KKvG, which wouldn't be the end of the world, honestly.

But if this makes $550-600m WW like G14 and KSI we'll keep getting these Legendary Monsterverse films.

That's assuming Toho relicense Godzilla to Legendary after their rights expire, which would be after the release of Godzilla vs Kong. Toho is also planning on expanding to the U.S. & want to start their own Godzilla universe so the chances of Legendary doing more with Godzilla after GvK are slim.

Deadline is reporting that KOTM died out last night, went from $25M+ to under $20M. Preorders must have dried up, still should have a decent run. But yeah, a $50M opening kinda sucks.

Nope, I don't have any problems. Issues of representation in cinema are very valid today, this is the 21st century. Look at Black Panther or even the Fast & Furious franchise, both of which are great examples of positive representation. They also happen to have done extremely well at the box-office. This latest Godzilla, on the other hand, doesn't seem to be doing all that great from a business perspective.

There were times when filmmakers and producers could safely ignore this issue and not have to worry, but these days, it's becoming increasingly clear it's not a smart way to do things, even if you only look at it from a business perspective.

I wasn't thinking about characters' roles and races too much while watching the film. But after you pointed it out, I do agree that it's kind of a shame that, yeah, blacks and latinos are largely relegated to tough talking soldier roles. I don't know if filmmakers even really notice it. Most audience members like me don't notice it immediately. But it is lazy, and I agree that it does or can have an impact on kids seeing characters that they might see themselves in more, being fit into confined character or career traits in films over and over again.

Something that I did think about during the film though, is how the '98 Godzilla had sooo few Asian or Japanese characters. The one(?) speaking role they had was a non-english speaking victim, acting more as a winking joke and a nod. It seems so weird and myopic by today's standards.
So I was thinking more of how this one is more natural in that regard, compared to twenty years ago.

Well, I haven't seen the 98 version since it came out, no doubt a lot of movies back then were just terrible in terms of representation and stuff, it was easier to get away with it back then (unfortunately).

But yeah with the new Godzilla, it is certainly possible the filmmakers either truly didn't notice it or just didn't care. Also, it's 2019 so mixed couples do exist, right?

Sadly the filmmakers didn't see this as an important part of updating the Godzilla mythology for the 21st century, it might have made the movie even more appealing for today's audiences.
