It's just modern naming convention. We had a Predator 2 around when GB2 came out, but none of the other Predator movies have been called Predator 3. Likewise after Alien 3, the next Alien movie wasn't Alien 4. We never had Die Hard 3, 4 or 5.

Seems to me that in all those cases the studios and the film makers were alluding to a departure from strict continuity.

And "More Aliens" didn't sound like a good title to follow Aliens with. Ditto "Even More Aliens"

Nope, the Alien and Die Hard series certainly followed on from the previous movies' continuity.

That must be why die hard Aliens fans have (stupidly) lobbied for a "direct sequel" to be made to that movie featuring Hicks and Newt who were clearly set up as continuing characters. Retconning Alien cubed to an alternate timeline. Alien Ressurection might as well be a sequel to the first Alien.

No, that's not why. And a new sequel to Aliens to retcon 3 and 4 is not a stupid idea, it's a brilliant idea to rejuvenate that franchise.

Well a new sequel to Terminator 2 to retcon Terminator 3, Terminator Salvation, and Terminator Genisys, is not a stupid idea, it's a brilliant idea to rejuvenate that franchise.

Oh wait..

So you agree that the direct continuity status of Alien 3 is negotiable. Well done. Thank you.

Not when it makes the same mistake Alien 3 made in its first 5 minutes.

I can still remember the brutal disappointment I felt as a kid, knowing nothing about Alien 3, Aliens one of my favorite movies, and getting kicked square in the nuts by the opening 5 minutes. I'll never be team Alien 3.

I love Alien 3. It chose nihilism right out of the gate and stuck with it through to the end. To me inevitable death is absolute horror.

It is also absolutely the sequel to Aliens, anyone putting stock in movie title continuity as a sole basis for whether something is a sequel or not is really reaching, and has clearly never seen the Fast & Furiouseseses or any of the Rambos.

GB: Afterlife is obviously both a sequel, and a soft reboot/relaunch of the franchise. Let's hope it succeeds at both.

A soft reboot is what Star Trek or X-Men: First Class did. This isn't it. You need to distance yourself a lot more from existing continuity to be considered a soft reboot, by ignoring it, retconning it or pushing it into another timeline. Simply being a sequel that takes place years later doesn't make you a soft reboot.

Even without that beginning, it is still a pretty sordid movie and unworthy of the legacy of its title.

Nobody is doing that.

The producers of Alien 3 have said that after Aliens, there was a desire to return to the original and what made the original a success. Whenever a studio says that it basically means that they wished to reboot the franchise and enjoy the first flush of success with a fresh audience and also entice the fans to come back. In reality Alien 3 winds up kind of being its own thing but trying to emulate parts of the original movie. Aliens is virtually irrelevant in Alien 3. Newt is used purely to illustrate Ripley's dread. And Bishop gets rebooted, literally, to spout exposition for a few seconds in order to revamp a scene from Alien.

Halloween IV is a soft reboot too.

That would be a hard reboot...or just 'a reboot'.

I never said Alien 3 wasn't a true sequel also. I pointed out that it has qualities and intent (including the soft rebooting of the "original") that some fans regard as a bargaining chip for negotiating it being replaced in the continuity.

I mentioned Halloween IV. It's a true sequel because it's what Michael did next. It's also a soft reboot because of the desire to "go back" to the original. And it got unsequeled by H20 ten years later.

No, those are soft reboots. A reboot cannot acknowledge the continuity of any previous movies at all.
