I've never been happier to get my predictions wrong. Hell Yeah!!!

For not a single nomination for a South Korean film in it's history......to Best Picture of the year. So happy for Bong Joon-ho and everyone involved. I hope this gives further recognition to the South Korean film industry, and for Bong's earlier films. More people need to see the genius that is Memories of Murder.

To those that criticize others for seemingly flip-flopping on whether they care for these awards or not, I'll say this. Yes, the academy awards do not matter when a film doesn't win because awards are not a barometer for how great a film is and never should be as they are subjective art. But winning does matter because it gives recognition to a wider audience that might otherwise ignore said films. Like it or hate it, these awards are very influential to the way the industry moves. So, I'm not happy because these awards gave more credence in affirming my favorite film of the year. That would be pathetic. I'm happy because more people may see something I've been championing for the last year and a director I've been championing for the last ten years.

Anyways....Parasite! F*** Yeah!

I know I’m old but I don’t even watch it anymore. One reason was it was shown on tape delay here and the other is it’s not that special event it used to be. It used to be The awards show but now it’s just one of many. There was a time when you tuned in to see the hosts (Hope, Carson, Crystal) as much as the event itself. Now it seems nobody wants to do it or they pick names out of a hat and hope for the best. I think the films are still fine but the show itself is just a big

(I'm only half serious, I know he was just being humble.)
Or he could’ve snapped his fingers and made half of the Directors disappear into dust.

Hope they get some angry phone calls tomorrow. That’s inexcusable (media) news reporting.

Or perhaps nobody gives two craps about which best picture won.... since the oscar's don't pick movies regular people actually see anymore. It could have been any of the other movies picked and I bet the news telecast would have done the same thing.

The award show has become laughable.
I mean, Star Wars in 1977 was nominated for ten academy awards and won six of them, plus a special achievement award for sound effects was given to Ben Burtt for the robot and creature noises. But sure, the academy ignores blockbuster movies.

I was bouncing off the walls - so glad the highly overrated 1917 didn't win Best Picture.

"Since Star Wars".... which would mean mentioning Star Wars does not pertain.

We all know the Academy doesn't like sci-fi or horror typically.

The Lion King, Avengers: Endgame, Aladdin, Spider-Man: Far From Home and all the rest should've been nominated for Best Picture. They desperately need the industry's approval.

I sat through both of them, but couldn't say one was better than the other, as they both bored the crap out of me. I only got through most of TWO TOWERS by fast-forwarding and have only ever seen bits of RETURN OF KING when flicking past it on some channel like TBS or TNT years and years back.

Admittedly, I am tons more into SF than fantasy (my favorite genre flicks this century have been CHILDREN OF MEN, HER and UNDER THE SKIN), so when I like fantasy, it better have some soul and grit and wit to it, like THE PRINCESS BRIDE, which is what they should have been throwing conventions for instead of trek spinoffs.

If Parasite winning BP gets just one more person over the stigma of subtitles, it's worth the win.

Audiences only care about existing IPs and studios respond in kind, making the mid-budget movie more and more rare. I'm making generalizations here but your choices for nominees these days boil down to blockbusters or arthouse. No s*** the Academy is going to pick the latter. The former isn't exactly starving for anything.

He mentioned that none of the other Parasite wins were reported on air either. Is that not suspicious enough?

What's laughable is your memory.

Didn't "special effect blockbuster movie" Gravity win 7 Oscars seven years ago, or Mad Max: Fury Road win 6 four years ago? I'd say even Titanic and Gladiator qualify as such.

There is no "stigma" of subtitles. Subtitles just stink. You end up reading what is being said instead of viewing the actor's acting. It kills the movie experience.

I'd rather not understand what a foreign movie is saying then have subtitles on.

Go back and read the posts. Talking about best picture here.... not the random other oscars they give out like special effects and editing... awards nobody really cares about.

Parasite should have had 80's Japan anime English dubbing. That would have brought all the accolades and oscars.

Speaking of English dubbing in Japan anime, Weathering With You had some pretty shoddy dubbing (at least compared to Your Name.)

What is embarrassing? Having a different opinion?

I watch a ridiculous amount of Japanese Pro Wrestling. I can't understand what the commentators say. I wouldn't want subtitles on the screen.

My opinion doesn't come from not liking foreign cultures. It has to do with hating subtitles. And a lot of people are like me. They don't want to read a movie.
