Btw does that mean Button could possibly be double dipped? Has a criterion ever been double dipped ignoring Blu as a double dip.
A lot. e.g. The Silence of the Lambs, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, The Bank Dick, etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if paramount releases a non criterion single disc edition or some other kind of double dip (extended edition? if one exists) in a year or two.

A bunch of Criterion movies have been re-released on dvd by other studio but most of them were inferior and with out any extras.
Do you know if Fincher did commentary and if he said that it was his final cut? I'm a huge fan of the movie but don't know if I should take the lunge and get the movie or wait for an extended edition if it's ever being planned.

Wow, I wish they kept the rights to Slience, they would have given it an awesome bluray and coverart as well.

But, have you seen Criterion's cover art for their "The Silence Of The Lambs" DVD release? It wasn't that "awesome," I don't think.

I don't understand where all this Ben Button extended edition talk keeps coming from. I mean, a), it's close to a 3 hour movie, and b) I've never heard Fincher or the studio make so much as a peep about an extended cut or significant scenes chopped out. I mean, I don't have any counter-evidence - i.e., no quote of Fincher saying "this is definitely my final cut, there will never be another" - but I really don't feel that's necessary considering the complete and utter lack of evidence on the other side. Yet people keep coming in here, worrying about an extended cut coming out someday. The Ben Button BD from Criterion is fantastic, and there's no evidence of anything better coming out - I say go enjoy.

I am equally befuddled by people wanting Criterion releases of mainstream films. For something like Silence of the Lambs, there is no reason in this day and age for Criterion to do the disc - the movie is popular enough for its actual owning studio to do right by it and get it out there, Criterion stepping in is simply not necessary. All those Criterions of popular movies that came out in the Laserdisc and early DVD days where a product of a different time, a different home video market - things have changed greatly since then. I'd much rather Criterion focus on films that otherwise would not get a quality release. If Paramount had done the Ben Button release, I would have been just as happy with it I'm sure. I mean, the Criterion branding on a new film does not deter any purchases from me, but I certainly don't see the need to clamor for more.

I'm not sure what you are saying - the only Benjamin Button Blu-ray release has Criterion branding. There is a single-disc standard definition DVD version with no Criterion branding, but that doesn't really apply to the conversation here.

I just realized, since Che is a new release, do you think it will end up in a Benjamin Button like case with it being in a "normal" bd case with a slipcover?

It's going to be at least 2 discs if I'm not mistaken..... packaged as "two films" together..... so It is possible that Criterion will do a case similar to The Complete Monterey Pop (although, unlike Monterey, they are not going to offer the disks individually)

EDIT:

2 disk per Criterion's site....... so it could be like Monterey, or it could be a standard Criterion case.... we'll have to wait and see (MSRP suggests standard cases etc.)

Well it wasn't that Ben Button was a new release, it was just how their deal with Paramount worked. Considering Che is licensed from IFC, another non-major, the deal is most likely very different - I expect it to be a normal Criterion case.

Yeah but their recent bluray releases have had some gorgeous cover art even for movies that I didn't like excluding Benjamin Button.

Fincher and the studio had arguments about what cut they wanted and there was supposedly a cut that was 3 hours exact.

The Criterion website says that the DVD and Blu-ray of "The Third Man" are both Out of Print.

I would guess it has something to do with the case beign replaced. I am sure if someone asks them they will state something about it.

I haven't seen Third Man. Hopefully it's better than Citizen Kane which I thought was a good movie but it would just lose you at certain points and take forever to get to the point. It sucks, I would prefer digipack casing over the regular case. Digipack just adds that collector's value to it.

The more I have thought about this being listed as OOP on their site the more I am thinking maybe they have lost the distribution rights to The Third Man already. I say this becuase at first I thought it maybe had something to do with the old digibook style case being replaced but the fact is that the standard DVD is listed as OOP also.

Currently amazon.com has the BD in stock at $24.99 Some have reported even being shipped the new case. Otherwise I am sure Criterion will be able to sell the replacement cases to those who choose to buy them for a decent time period.

I ordered my replacement case today, but it was late afternoon so it may not ship till Monday or so.

It's unique and different. For those complaining, do you literally carry these things all day around with you? Even if you watched that movie so many times, if you handled it with proper care it wouldn't look so bad.
