I'll have to rebuy Yamamdas since I broke down months ago and bought the DVD.
I don't know if I'll replace all of the Disney BDs or not.

so the kingdom of dreams and madness is still a DVD here in the US right?

Really sad that these films don't have digital copies. I would love to have them on the go.

So considering that Miyazaki is making a new film, will that license go to GKids or Disney?

I'm not too familiar with the original deal that Disney had with Ghibli.

I believe since From Up on Poppy Hill in 2012 (which was the first Ghibli film to be licensed for full distribution to GKids), Ghibli licenses on a case by case basis and has self-produced all English dubs since then (Ghibli’s former Intl distribution chief Geoffrey Wexler personally produced the dubs).

Disney got The Wind Rises in 2013, but since then (with the exception of The Red Turtle, which Wild Bunch controls the international distribution rights to) GKids has gotten the distribution rights to subsequent Ghibli films.

With GKids picking up the NA home video distribution rights to almost all Ghibli films this year (except for The Wind Rises, which is still under contract to Disney, and Grave if the Fireflies, which Ghibli has limited to no control internationally), its likely GKids would pick up Miyazaki’s newest project if it does get completed.

Mine came in from Amazon in a very very big yellow padded envelope. Surprisingly all the slips came out okay. Also had Serenity 4K Blu-ray in that order. I guess having 7 movies in an order doesn't warrant a box anymore form Amazon

Upon further inspection, some of my slips have light creases on the front. Not very noticeable unless you stare at it. Not sure if I should be bothered with exchanging it or leave it be...

I picked up Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke at Target, because the slip covers were in good shape, even though I have them all coming from Amazon today. I'll return the copies with the least banged-up slips. The things we do!

The slips feel a little cheap, I was really hoping we were going to get those really nice matte ones, like the one Only Yesterday came in. Oh well, it's just a bit of cardboard I guess.

Edit: SA and PM were the only Ghibli films my local Target had.

I ordered the 6 movies + HxH Pt 3 for a total of 7 items and I received all mine in a box

I was at Wal-mart today (10/17/17) and they had the first wave of the GKIDS re-releases.
They had about 2 or 3 of each, and that's probably all they ordered.
I did not buy any (I'm at least trying to resist the urge to double-dip), but I did take note of a few things.
#1 The Blu-ray disc for Spirited away doesn't have the "Nippon Television Special" on it (the back of the package says it's only on the DVD disc).
#2 None of them have 6.1 only 5.1 or 2.0.

UPDATE: I found this pic on GKIDS' twitter page and it shows that the new spines line up perfectly with the more recent GKIDS releases.

Whats the point in sticking those stickers on the slipcovers like that anyway? Both Walmart and Best Buy do it and they never say the price on them, so why bother?

Good thing I got the original Disney releases with the gold spine on the slipcovers which I prefer over the GKids ones. I gave away all the DVD copies to my cousin, so now my collection feels lighter and incomplete.

I love these new GKids slips but I have all the Disney releases, including slipcovers, so I personally can't justify a double dip haha. They sure do look nice all lined up, though!

The new GKIDS releases aren't terribly necessary if you only watch the films dubbed. If you want to watch them in the original Japanese, then only 3-5 of the Disney releases need to be replaced depending on how picky you are.

They didn't have them at my Target or Best Buy. I already have all the Disney ones, but was thinking about buying them again.

I always figured it had something to do with proof of where you got it from. I could easily be wrong though.

Canada Disney vs. GKIDS

Here is a chart I made of the different special features between the Disney & GKIDS Blu-rays. ( Will be updated if needed )

A few general things to get out of the way first.
#1 All the GKIDS editions contain the exact same English dubs as the Disney Blu-rays, so no Streamline or Fox dubs.
#2 Disney's Blu-rays are region free, but the GKIDS Blu-rays are region A locked.
#3 Apart from Nausicaa all the GKIDS Blu-rays seem to use the same transfers as their Disney counterparts, but the bitrates on some of them are higher.
However, it seems to be a matter of personal opinion whether or not it makes any noticeable difference in picture quality. (I myself noticed no difference when comparing both editions of Porco Rosso) Also, at least one user has stated that the GKIDS releases feature mild compression issues that their Disney counterparts don't have.

NOTE: Be sure to click "[Show spoiler]" next to the title of each film for info regarding video/audio/subtitles.

Bonus features exclusive to Disney's edition are written in BLUE.
Bonus features exclusive to GKIDS' edition are written in RED.
Bonus features available on both editions are written in plain BLACK.

The Wind Rises
[Show spoiler]NOTE: As far as I know, both editions have proper English subtitle tracks. (though they may not be identical translations)
According to the back of both cases, the Disney/Touchstone edition has DTS-HD 1.0 Japanese & English audio.
However, on the GKIDS edition, they're both DTS-HD 2.0

Despite what the back of the case says, the Disney edition seems to have DTS-HD MA 6.1 English & Japanese audio tracks,
while on the GKIDS edition they are DTS-HD MA 5.1

Also, GKIDS released a 30th Anniversary Edition in 2018. It included the film's soundtrack on CD and a 40-page essay-book in an oversized DigiPack.
However, the Blu-ray disc itself is the same as their standard release.

In 2020, GKIDS released a SteelBook edition of My Neighbor TOTORO.

Kiki’s Delivery Service
[Show spoiler] NOTE: Neither edition has literally translated subtitles. (no home release does to my knowledge)
However, GKIDS' edition has “more accurate” dubtitles based on the English dub produced by the now-defunct Streamline Pictures.
Disney's edition only has dubtitles based on their own, revised, dub script.

Both editions use the same revised English dub from 2010, audio error included.
(The original/unaltered Disney dub hasn't been available since the 2003 DVD.)

Said audio error is demonstrated in this YouTube video, which I take no credit for.

In 2020, GKIDS released a SteelBook edition of Kiki’s Delivery Service.
It contains the exact same booklet and disc content as their standard release. However, the pictures on the discs are different.

Also, GKIDS released a Collector's Edition in 2019. It included the film's soundtrack on CD and a 40-page essay-book in an oversized DigiPack.
However, the Blu-ray disc itself is the same as their standard release.

Also, GKIDS released a Collector's Edition in 2019. It included the film's soundtrack on CD and a 40-page essay-book in an oversized DigiPack.
However, the Blu-ray disc itself is the same as their standard release. Which means this release does not include the Nippon Television Special.

Castle in the Sky
[Show spoiler] NOTE: GKIDS' edition has proper English subtitles, while Disney's edition only has dubtitles based on their own, revised, dub script.

GKIDS' edition has two English audio tracks, both are the 2010 revised dub but with different versions of the score, while Disney's only has one.
(The original/unaltered Disney dub hasn't been available since the 2003 DVD.)

Disney:

GKIDS:

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
[Show spoiler] NOTE: GKIDS' edition fixes the "burnt-in English credits" issue that Disney's edition had.
As far as I know, both editions have proper English subtitle tracks. (though they may not be identical translations)

Disney's edition came out in 2011, so it uses the same transfer as the 2010 Japanese Blu-ray.
GKIDS' edition uses a newer transfer from the Japanese Hayao Miyazaki Collection released in 2014.

The difference between the two transfers can be seen through the following caps-a-holic.com link, and in the images below.

The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki
This set was released by Disney as an Amazon exclusive in 2015, and it includes all 11 feature-films directed by Hayao Miyazaki.
All the films in this set have proper English subtitles, with the slight exception of Kiki’s Delivery Service which still uses Streamline dubtitles.
All the films, with the obvious exception of The Castle of Cagliostro, use the same transfers as the individual Disney Blu-rays.
None of the individual films in this set have any bonus features, but it does have a single bonus disc that includes the following:
- Yuki’s Sun (Yuki no Taiyo) - 1972 television pilot
- Episodes 26, 27, and 41 of the 1972 anime Little Samurai (Akado Suzunosuk )
- Miyazaki’s Retirement Press Conference (uncut)
Other things of note are: Nausicaa's "burnt-in English credits" issue is corrected, Ponyo's JP audio is DTS-HD MA 5.1, and Cagliostro only has the 1992 English Dub.

I don't mean to derail this thread from the Gkids discussion....

But I was looking to purchase Panda Go Panda. I see there is the Japanese release that is rather pricey and a US release by Discotek. I am having a hard time finding any review information on the Discotek release.

Does anyone know if there is any reason to splurge for the Japanese release over the Discotek issue. I am not super concerned about packing quality, mostly just what is on the disc.
