Thoughts on A Hidden Life? Malick was wise not to use a single subtitle when German language was used. Instead of reading the dialogue, we read the characters and their faces.

Oh okay. Millions of people worldwide viewing 100+ years of movies must be wrong then. My mistake.

It's a learned skill. People just don't want to learn it.

I think of awards like I think if box office - I’m not getting anything so I don’t care.

I saw in the news that Parasite won both best picture and best international picture. I was surprised it was nominated in both - is that fair the other movies in the foreign language category? The fact it was nominated as best picture meant it was certainly going to win the other category.

Wish I had had the chance to see Parasite at the cinema but didn’t get released her - very rarely get a “foreign language” movie. Looking forward to it.

No doubt Hollywood studios are after Bong Joon-Ho already.

Oh, so you’re not really bothered about the Oscars appeal. You’re just a bit annoyed about subtitles. What a waste of an argument all that was.

The term "special effect movie" is incorrect, many dramas including The Irishman feature a lot of cisual effects shots. I think he meant the sci-fi/fantasy genre.

it lends credence to the awards if they allow a film to be in multiple categories. that is a testament to how great some films are

The only thing I was disappointed about was Jo Shishido not getting a mention in the memorial segment. I understand he didn't make Hollywood films but he has quite a few fans in the US and a commendable legacy in film.

Have to say that Scorcese is a true class act - he's genuinely delighted by seeing others win. Inspirational.

Damn, I didn't even know he died

They did show Machiko Kyō, who I think pretty much did Japanese films, though many that were more more popular here like Rashomon.

Bong's apparent down-to-earth personality combined with a standing ovation for Marty was a standout of the night to me. Felt like nice contrast to all of the typical posturing.

Do I feel like audience tastes should be a factor in the academy and they shouldn’t just be critic’s awards or pseudo indie spirits, sure.

But I feel like they have found a good balance the last two years, and the academy is under no obligation to pick a hit movie (which BTW, for the type of movie it is, Parasite is a major box office success) as Best Picture. Let’s not forget, comic book movies have gotten nominated the last two years (something seemingly impossible before) including historic directing nomination and lead acting win this year, 5 of this year’s Picture nominees have gone over $100 million domestic, and the last two years Bohemian Rhapsody and Joker got in without particularly good reviews, meaning it was the audience response to those movies which kickstarted their awards run.

Also, with Parasite winning, feels like that was the last major barrier to BP to fall. Every major genre (Silence of the Lambs and Shape of Water aren’t straight horror or sci-fi films, but I feel they have enough elements to qualify while belonging to multiple genres), and a FL movie has now won. I guess you could point to an animated movie or documentary (never even been nominated, maybe in an expanded field a movie like Hoop Dreams could have gotten in), but I don’t think there is the same pressure on those.

Laura Dern's speech was another highlight and was the best of the actors speeches. Genuine, concise, and it was nice to see how moved her mom was to see her reach that echelon.

My favorite out of the nominees was JoJo Rabbit so I'm glad it got a big screenplay award.

You gotta get them while they're young and teach them the right way. People aren't born racist or misogynistic.

fully agree. Asia hasnt experienced the type of moral crusading that the Western world has in the last few years. theyre probably about 10-15 years behind us

I loved Endgame, as my posts about it will show. I really enjoyed the Avengers films overall, really. But Endgame was spectacular for me. Even I would never vote for it for Best Picture. That just seems crazy to me.

I thought that Parasite was a very good film. But I also thought that I probably didn't quite get it in the same way as many others. I'm going to give it another look, at least.

I think that when people talk about ratings, and not just for the Oscars but for all sorts of things, the fact is the world's a very different place than it was 20 years ago.
