Me and my husband just got home. We went to Target, FYE, Walmart and Best Buy and I found 1 lone copy of The Shining 4K (the slipcover version) at Best Buy. They had like 6 steelbooks but 1 left of the regular 4K.

FYE didn't have it. Target sold out. Walmart didn't even get it. And Best Buy had the last copy. I finally got me one! Beautiful artwork. Can't wait to watch it.

Hello,

Could someone refresh my memory? I have strong recollections of seeing this when it opened and once or twice after. Then, years later on 35mm, again. And, of couse, on home video and even TV broadcasts.

I just saw what I assumed was a 4k presentation and while the 5.1 track sounds great and 98-99%% close to the original mix, the image seems a bit...soft. VERY film like, though I've noticed strobing on lights during fast movement and when panning during the first scenes in the hotel. But the softness has me curious.

Yeah, this looked and sounded fantastic. A total no brainer to buy. I've never been so riveted by every second of it like this before.

I'll be that guy: This release is a massive disappointment without the European cut included. I jumped around from scene to scene and it definitely looks superior to the old BD, though not night and day IMO, but I'll be going back to my UK Kubrick set BD until I find a bootleg 4K Euro cut edit. At the end of the day I guess editing is more important to me than picture and sound.

Really? I picked up on that for the first time a year or two ago after upgrading to a better television. It's even noticeable in a Youtube clip if you're looking for it:

Hmm, I was bit underwhelmed by the steel in person (the matte finish is especially disappointing compared to the glossy Gremlins steel) but the yellow spine is pretty spiffy and a nice nod to the theatrical poster.

The red spine on the slip is a nice nod to blood.

I thought the 2007 release would look better based on the stills I saw earlier on caps-o-holic, but watching it quickly changed my mind.

Of course, the 4K version blows them both out of the water, the comparison was done after watching the entire movie in 4K.

I've never really associated blood and gore with The Shining personally. There's the iconic elevator scene of course but that's pretty much it besides
[Show spoiler]Hallorann's corpse
. The film is mostly psychological horror.

That said, the white on the new standard art is fitting given the setting but overall it feels more like Friday the 13th in the snow than The Shining to me.

As a HUGE fan, neither have I.

That's what I was going for, and what I assumed "they" were when designing the slip. Perhaps I'm wrong, and Red was just a random color choice.

The standard Shining 4K art ain't subtle but WB was pretty random with their color choices for the Batmans (white backgrounds? bright blue accents for '89?) and Gremlins (yellow slip? red steel?) so who knows?

Oh Geez!

You guys just don't understand...

(Yes, the 4K edition of 2001 is spectacular as well, unlike the gif I just posted)

PS: 2001 got the special packaging, but The Shining didn't?

PPS: **** Best Buy Steelbooks!

Watching the ape toss the bone without the satellite match-cut gives me blue balls.

It gives me pause.

To think we're getting a remaster of "Eyes Wide Shut" before...Anything Else!

I simply went with the art I had fewer issues with. Collectibility had less to do with it than WB pricing the standard release only $5 less than the steel. Did the same with several catalog releases this year. I wish it was always as simple as when the Alien standard release was available for $15 on release day.

I simply go with the regular version...unless there's a digibook, because then there's plenty of art!

I own the BD digibook for CW, and it's perfect. I just don't get the fascination with steelbooks...maybe it's just me.

PS: They are heavy, do not provide any additional content related to the film, and (most importantly) they're heavy.

SB for me mainly because of orig yellow,
also much cleaner without 4k UHD banner on standard
and as others have said spine is perfect lol
if they had orig art on front it would be unbeatable
