One of the issues with the oler paper criterion cases is that you never know what condition it will be in when you order it from an online retailer. Even my copy of The Third Man case looks bad and I got a hold of a copy Barnes & Noble had and it was dented on bottom edges and the case was pressed at an angle and as much as you can un bend the flattening of the case it never takes a decent shape.

the good thing is Criterion has fixed the situation with replacement cases, for those who want a more uniform case.

Also that top to bottom opening is really bad. It would have worked better from the side like the standard DVD formula.

To be honest I think the new Criterion plastic cases are the best BD case out there. It is classy simple no blue plastic clashing with cover art. Very well done case.

i have Criterion laserdiscs that are from 1988 that look in better shape and have held up better than one of their BD paper cases. (side note - never had any issues with the standard DVD paper cases for releases like Playtime, The Furies etc.. as long as you get a good looking one from the start they are a lot more sturdy in teh paper quality)

but no one is forced to buy the new replacement cases. it is just cool that they are offering. everybody wins.

I have yet to see the Criterion clear case, wish you could order them online and wish BB had it. Ah I never knew it was like a slipcover holder, I thought it be the side holder like dvd. I love the Fight Club and Se7en packaging, I prob won't discard my Fight Club package for the new bluray.

Here ya go. I try to post links to all of the packaging photos that Chris over at criterionforum.org puts up. If you ever bother to look back through the threads, you'll see links to the other cases, I'm sure.

Wonder if it has anything to do with the possible remake? Probably not, but you never know..

Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio Remaking 'The Third Man'?
by Elisabeth Rappe Oct 24th 2009 // 9:02AM

An intriguing remake rumor has popped up on CHUD. Devin Faraci is reporting that longtime friends Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio might star in a remake of Carol Reed's classic thriller The Third Man. Canal Plus is said to be shopping around the project, which includes a screenplay penned by Steven Knight.

The details are scarce (and it may not happen at all), so it's not known whether this would be a straight up-remake or a rewrite, or who Maguire or DiCaprio would be playing. But the idea is enough to undoubtedly cause reactions of anger and panic around film fans, but think about this calmly. It's not as though Maguire, DiCaprio, or Knight are untalented slouches, and it's the kind of story that could be given a modern rewrite and stand on its own feet. I would actually love to see this rewritten, and set in Iraq or Afghanistan. I'd love to see it set it in years immediately preceding the Soviet Union, putting Harry Lime and Holly Martins in the dangerous, free-for-all Yeltsin economy. (Faraci suggests making it sci-fi, which would be very brave and very awesome.)

The Third Man is one of those stories like Dashiell Hammet's Red Harvest that is flexible enough to work in another adaptation and lose nothing of its original power. I'm very curious to see if this comes together, and in what form. DiCaprio would be the perfect actor to play the smirking Lime. I just hope they don't mimic my favorite scene. Some things are better left to Welles.

Anyone know if we can order 2 cases at the same time? My Seventh Seal case was heavily damaged during shipping (deepdiscountdvd is a bunch of idiots), and I'd like to replace it.

Why didn't you just return it to DD?

That's kind of nice, though I would prefer some slipcover for those and these are blu-ray sized right? I'm thinking about just ordering the upgrade case for Third Man and using it on Benjamin Button once I get it.

Edit: and Pertaining to the mainstream/indie releases for Criterion, I have some indies. I prefer some modern movies now, I mean it's great that they're releasing classics don't get me wrong but there are some indie movies that had such fantastic cinematography and stories it's a shame not many know about them. Movies like The Painted Veil, Mean Creek.

Criterion have confirmed that both SD and BD versions of The Third Man are indeed OOP.

Wonder if they'd keep the Zither music?

This is a pretty amazing idea IMO, I'd see it.

Welp....as long as they're still going to offer replacement cases to those of us who already have it, doesn't bother me too much

Did they reply by e-mail or? If so can you post it.

I know it usually takes retailers some time to drain their stock of the titles that go OOP. So as long as people are aware they should be able to get copies of the DVD and BD. Time permitting.

UPDATE: They seem to have confirmed it on their facebook pafe. No reason has been given but I would guess it all comes down to distribution rights.

*** sidenote The new Plastic cases are the thickness of a standard DVD case** I think you had a comment about the BD case size needing a slipcover.

I certainly hope they won't stop selling the clear plastic case for The Third Man too quickly. I still need to get it for my card board edition of the Third man!!
