If the Malick sale is the only sale, it will be pretty disappointing. Criterion just tweeted about something special on monday though?

Seeing as Martin Scorsese is a huge film preservationist and given his confessed love for the Lewton movies. It would be awesome to see some of those movies in HD along with the Martin Scorsese narrated 'Val Lewton: The Man in the Shadows' documentary. I think Warner Brothers owns the rights though.
What Banned User said

The association between Lewton and these films (over the directors, etc) has been furthered by the studies, especially with the release of the Val Lewton collection on DVD and the documentary with Scorsese. Obviously the director's should get credit for the films, but this is one case where the producer is incredibly important.

If they liked Schrader so darn why-dontcha-marry-him much, they would've re-released Taxi Driver as well. They DIDN'T. In point of fact, they couldn't--Sony's not letting it go.
For the same reason, Universal's not letting their once-briefly-popular early-80's horror film go, either, and MGM aside, it's pretty rare that Criterion can crowbar any movie away from its franchise-greedy studio.

Slips aside, I'm joining the poster who remembered "Most Dangerous Game", and wonder whether Island of Lost Souls fell far enough into pre-Code public domain for Criterion to attempt a rescue.
It's never had any kind of home-theater release at all that I know of, and THAT has Criterion Written All Over It.
And if it is Natassja....good lordy, Criterion, you LIKED that mess???

(Seriously--Remember when everyone thought Kiss Me Deadly's suitcase was going to be Pulp Fiction, just because, well, it had to be?
That was sort of annoying. So is this. )

I just checked their feed and they are almost at 40k. Last checked a few minutes ago it was 39842. They may hit it within the hour. Unfortunately, I do not see another sale happening, but who knows.

"Macho Man" Randy Savage died.

Randy Poffo's death is more important right now than any Criterion-related stuff or any of that "end of the world zombie apocalypse" stuff.

I watched The Great Dictator tonight, but unfortunately, I didn't like it. I loved Modern Times, but this was so long, meandering and self-indulgent. It did have its moments, but I doubt I'll ever watch it again. Not a good blind buy.

Yes, it was released on HD DVD. I still own it. I'm jealous of all the people who bought their HD DVDs for $3 a piece. I paid at least $25-$30 for each of mine during the format war. It's one reason I'm not in a hurry to buy them again on BD.

I SOOOO wish this was the case...and to go along with that, I wish studios would release two separate editions. A single disc edition with only the movie, and a two disc edition with the movie on one disc and the features on another...then price them accordingly. This is starting to be done some now. A trend I LOVE as I do not care at all about bonus content. Just give me the movie with the best presentation possible.

Just finish watch White Material - The Criterion Collection edition, half hour ago.

Gorgeous transfer! Just love the great cinematography by Yves Cape. Another masterpiece film by Claire Denis. The film is beautifully lensed and terrifically acted.

Synopsis: This film talk about a woman (act by Isabelle Huppert) that insist and refuse to face the truth, stubborn stay by ignoring what is actually happen outside....
  • Movie - 5 Star
  • PQ - 5 Star
  • AQ - 5 Star
  • Extras - 3.5 Star.
The extras is not much, it only cover of:
- 3 Interviews with Director - Claire Denis, Actress - Isabelle Huppert, and also Actor - Isaach de Bankole.
- A deleted scene.
- Short documentary by Claire Denis itself during film's premiere at the 2010 Ecrans Noirs Film Festival in Cameroon where the film itself took place... sadly the premiere is not well success due to technical issue at Cameroon.
- Theatrical Trailer.

Well recommended. 5 star in overall.

** Kindly noted they is a male frontal scene (act by Nicolas Duvauchelle) in this film, no sex, just frontal... beware when watching with kids.

Finished watching Pale Flower and I loved It! The cinematography was beautifully done, and the story was very interesting. The use of scope was perfect for the gaming scenes with long groups of players seated on the floor. Takemitsu's scores are always unique, but I think this may be his best.

A "cool, seductive jewel" indeed.
