Yeah, the animation is what struck me the most. It's so gorgeous. I believe I only gave it a 4/5 because there were some parts that didn't work for me, like the cheesy ending.

I think you might appreciate it, Al.
Yeah, the ending was a bit busy for me too. But I can forgive it for it's overall excellence.

Seeking a friend for the end of the World

Best film I've seen in twelve months.

Its the final 21 day of Earths existence. How will people behave?

The beginning is darn funny in a quirky way. The middle becomes a bit more serious with dramatic and romantic qualities. The final act is amazing, poignant, bittersweet, melancholy, and beautifully tragic. An odd blend, connected in the right order, paced perfectly.

The film could be considered manipulative, overly sentimantal and cliche riddled. I didnt care. It all worked for me. I tend to be a romanticist, so the last twenty minutes had me blubbering like a school girl.

Acting was teriffic. All technicals were handled very well.

Film 5/5
PQ 4.5/5
AQ 4.5/5

I will own this when the price is right.

Next greatest blind-buy: Crash (2004)

Yeah, I heard it was controversial and polarizing, but for $2, I'll try anything. ANYTHING!!!

Well, I did enjoy the movie in the same fashion as Magnolia or Babel; all these films have these sporadic episodes of interesting drama that's totally not boring or anything. I ultimately felt that Crash was a good film, there's just one or two quibbles I have...

The only thing that really brings the film down for me are the characters. Just about all of them are frakking jerks! The themes of racism and hatred are made so blatant that they drive the characters to act as irrational, ignorant, hateful bigots. Nobody's likable, because everybody is a tormentor. Everybody is the victim as well. It gets somewhat convoluted that way; I wanted to like these people, because they all have nice moments and they're played by a great cast, but in the end, they were all jerks! As far as the themes go, aside from having a few people turn around magnificently, I felt it had all the subtlety of the Executioner colliding with the Death Star II. It tries so hard to beat the racism over the audience's heads, as if to say "HEY, LOOK, WE'RE ALL JERKS!" but then I never felt like the film taught me anything, other than everybody's a jerk. Nothing like American History X, which actually felt like a proper racism lesson to me.

Other than that, it's all golden. Acting is great, writing has its moments, and the production is good and slick. Music was really nice.

4/5 (Entertainment: Good | Story: Good, but frustrating | Film: Good)

Recommendation: Rental.

I'm still not sure if I'll keep this one. Need some time to think...

Next greatest blind-buy: Rolling Stones: Gimme Shelter

Rock and roll!!!

Hippies!

Hell's Angels!

The concert that supposedly marked the passing of one era and the beginning of another, striking a deep cultural chord in anybody who may have been alive and cared about all this crap!

As for me, I just got it for the music, and the music is gooood!

As a documentary, I found the occasional inter-cutting of random behind-the-stage and behind-the-film scenes a little jarring. As the film went on, it showed outright how messed-up things got at this concert, with the band having to stop occasionally as fights broke out in the audience, and they scolded everybody like grown-ups trying to control a room full of kids when only one is acting up. Four people died that day...it was pretty sad. I think the most disturbing thing about the incident is that it looked like it was a good show and people were having a good time, so who would run around starting up some s**t? Some jerk in the audience? One of these Hell's Angels serving as bodyguards? We never really find out in the film; the point is, it happened.

The best thing about it is that, at least for the last half of the film, it felt like I was really there.

4/5 (Entertainment: Good | Content: Good | Film: Good)

Recommendation: Best recommended to fans or those who lived during this era, or those who have an interest, and maybe worth a look for Rolling Stones fans.

This Blu-Ray looks quite grainy and a bit soft, but it's likely a source issue. Considering the age of the film and its origins, it probably looks as great as it could. Sound quality is awesome with the music, just okay with the dialogue.

I am decidedly NOT a Quentin Tarantino fan, but today I saw Django Unchained. I must say, I found the film much better than I had anticipated. Some very good cinematography; the story is deeply imbued with the Western as a traditional American genre, but also with other hero-mythology stereotypes; it is very funny; it is also thought-provoking, and makes a point of hammering (figuratively and, yes, quite literally), some deeply unsettling and uncomfortable historical truths. The move is not without its faults, most notably its length. But on the whole I found the movie well-written and well-acted (Foxx, DiCaprio, and Waltz are all excellent).

Default A Movie A Day: Day 250

Dredd (2012)
dir. Pete Travis
The Good: Ultra-violent. Olivia Thirlby, badass hotness.

The Bad: Cheap-looking. Crappy CGI. Shaky acting and dialogue. Way too in love with slow-motion. Not that fun or action-packed.

The Bottom Line: It doesn't matter who ripped off who, Dredd just comes off as an inferior and less exciting version of The Raid. With such a shallow plot, it doesn't quite compensate for it with something special. Having said all of that, it does have its moments whenever the action kicks in, and it's worth a look for those who are into hyper-violent thrillers.

Default It's Been A Week But I Am Back

Pride & Prejudice (2005)

Directed by : Joe Wright
Starring : Keira Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen, Brenda Blethyn
Format : HDTV

Story : The Bennet family with five daugthers live a independant finacial lifestyle in 18th century England. However Mrs Bennet is desperate to marry her five young daugthers and can seem much too pushy for certain people. A weathly young bachelor Charles Bingley move close by along with his snobish sister and amuch reserve friend, Mr. Darcy (Macfadyen). Mrs Bennet is of course happy with the attention Bingley give's to one of her daugther but Darcy give's his young friend other advice. Her younger sister Elizabeth (Knightley) who later learn of Darcy treatment of her sister relation with Bingley, refuse his advance. Darcy slowly change his attitude as his feeling for Elizabeth and does his best to fix everything, including helping her younger avoid a serious mistake and pay for a wedding and fixing relation between Bingley her her other sister. Even if Darcy is suppose to marry another young girl, in the end his choice is Elizabeth after her father give's his consent.

Comments : It's rare for a man to actually be a fan of Jane Austen, count me as one of them. I have read this book and seen almost every possible adaptation of this story, from the BBC, movies and even the modern and foreign ones. Overall it's not bad but not one I would care to see again. I think the main problem was Knightley who I found to be a very weak average actor, so having her in the main role of the story did not help. Some of the rest of the casting was also a bit strange and did not fit weel with the characters they were playing. Not bad but mostly average, I would suggest to see other much better adaptation of this story before you see this one.

Comments : As far as I alwats heard, this movie was never very popular. Outside of myself I have never heard much good comments for it. I always enjoyed this movie. Yes it as some problems but nothing too major and I am also willing to overlook the change of setting from greek mythology from arab mythology, Granted it's a little silly but not a huge deal breaker for me. This movie as been shown every year around this time in HD on a local TV channel. Frankly I am very sad that it's still not on Blu-ray.

The Birds (1963)
Horror, Thriller, 119 minutes
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Starring Rod Taylor, Tippi Hedren, Jessica Tandy and Suzanne Pleshette

The recent release of The Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection on Blu-ray prompted me to revisit some of the best films in the set. I have always liked The Birds because I saw it as a child and it has stuck with me over the years. It's interesting viewing such films again with a critical eye, rather than as a young boy who just needed to be entertained.

There are frequent spoilers ahead, so stop reading now if you haven't yet seen the film.

[Show spoiler]Like Psycho, The Birds starts off with a light tone, as Hitchcock leads us to believe that the film will develop into a romantic comedy. I admire this approach because it's realistic. People would be acting normally a few days before a disaster or a terrifying turn of events. So you can expect to see the main characters introduced at the start of the film, and you'll see them flirt and develop a mutual attraction. This paves the way for Melanie Daniels' (Tippi Hedren) subsequent actions as she drives to Bodega Bay to deliver a gift for Mitch Brenner's (Rod Taylor) daughter, Cathy (Veronica Cartwright).

If Hitchcock had decided to make the entire film a romantic comedy, I'm sure he would have done a good job. There's a depth present that doesn't exist in most examples from that genre. The dialogue gives us important insights into the characters, as well as supplying some of the exposition for the basic plot. We learn that Melanie is rich and works several jobs on different days of the week. She seems to have a wild, impulsive streak, and that fits her actions when she decides to visit Mitch. She also lies often, although never in a malicious way. Mitch is playful when he interacts with Melanie, but we soon learn that he is dependable in a crisis.

Melanie is also resourceful, and we see her charter a boat and use it to approach Mitch's house unobserved. The first indication that the world might not be idyllic comes when Melanie is attacked by a gull as she is returning the boat. The scene is so out of place because there hasn't been any suggestion that the film will be anything but fun up to that point, and it seems all the more shocking for it.

The events begin to turn darker in tone, and the pace increases from the moment of the initial attack. Other people begin to report attacks, and we witness several instances of unusual behavior by the birds. This is exactly the kind of novel that Stephen King might write; the world is apparently normal, but one thing is out of place. What would you do if you witnessed similar behavior from birds or small animals? It's so unexpected that it can be quite frightening in places. There's no campy humor to relieve the tension like that found in many modern horror movies. Hitchcock slowly increases tension throughout the film, without ever explaining why the birds are behaving in such an odd way.

I have always enjoyed seeing what happens when events cause society to begin to break down. What lengths would you go to to keep yourself or your family safe, or to provide food when it was scarce? The story takes place over a couple of days, so there's no serious breakdown of order in The Birds, but we do see how people start to band together and take care of each other.

The film was made in 1963, so you can't expect the special effects to be as convincing as modern techniques would allow. The bird effects are a combination of puppets, machines, and a few live birds, using a blue screen to insert them into the action. The special effects earned an Oscar nomination at the time, so try to forgive the somewhat dated feel.

As usual, Hitchcock assembled a strong cast. Rod Taylor and Tippi Hedren are convincing as potential romantic partners, and both give good performances as their characters encounter stressful situations. Mrs. Brenner (Jessica Tandy) is an important character too. She's reluctant to embrace Melanie's arrival and fears that her son Mitch may abandon her at some point. There's one particularly good scene in which Melanie talks to Mrs. Brenner and tries to allay her fears about the birds. You can sense some level of acceptance from Mrs. Brenner, although she can't decide whether she actually likes Melanie.

One of the best scenes occurs outside the town's school, where Annie (Suzanne Pleshette) is teaching a class. She makes the children sing, while Melanie waits outside to collect Cathy. In typical Hitchcock fashion, we see one or two birds landing behind Melanie. She's unaware of their presence until she turns and sees hundreds of them. She comes to a decision and goes inside to warn Annie of the potential problem. This leads to one of the most dramatic sequences in the film as the children leave the school.

The Birds is elevated above the level of most horror films for several reasons: The characters are real people with genuine fears, the dialogue means something, the acting is strong, and the audience is given time to absorb the danger of a situation rather than being bombarded with gory or shocking scenes. The ending (intentionally) doesn't completely resolve the story, but it leaves us with a sense of optimism.

With the exception of the song sung by the children at the school, there is no score in the entire film. It reminds me of The Mist in that way, and I think the scenes contain more tension because we make up our own minds about how to feel, rather than having the music inform us that there is danger or a scary moment approaching.

Most of the whimsical scenes happen early in The Birds. Hitchcock's cameo is impossible to miss, and when somebody whistles at Melanie, it's a reference to a TV ad in which she first caught the attention of Hitchcock. By the end of the film, you'll feel as if you have been through a grueling emotional journey. It's a journey well-worth taking. It doesn't even matter why the birds were behaving so strangely, or whether their behavior was only present in Bodega Bay, or more widespread.

As for the Blu-ray, it's a mixed bag. The DTS-HD Master Audio Mono track enhances the experience considerably. The sound of fluttering wings is particularly effective. However, the picture quality is disappointing. While some of the brighter scenes do show good detail, far too many of the shots appear soft. It appears that Tippi Hedren's close-ups were intentionally softened, in a way similar to the female characters on the original Star Trek show. As for the effects, the additional information offered by the Blu-ray transfer highlights some of the weaker shots. This is probably as good as it's going to get for a long time, and I do recommend that you upgrade, but I'm still a little disappointed.

I popped in my next greatest blind-buy: Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Blade. However this is one of those cases where I did other stuff and didn't pay full attention to the film, so this review might not do the film justice.

Also, as is the case with Red Cliff, this is one of those movies that originally ran for four hours (as a two-part film), but was cut down to a mere 150 minutes. This is the shorter cut I watched, but even with 90+ minutes cut, I think I got the gist of everything.

Even with the shorter cut, the film still feels pretty long and demands attention. Action and fighting are frequent; pretty cool, but rarely awe-inspiring. A lot of the imagery is cool, however.

The story covers the historic conflict between the Japanese and Taiwanese natives trying to kick them off their homeland. I have no idea how historically accurate it is (do I ever? ), but the topic is mildly interesting and enlightening.

The film is competently-made with decent acting/writing, photography, and production value.

If there's anything to complain about, it's just that it doesn't have the resonance or immersion as other movies in the genre (especially Red Cliff).

Chances are good that I might get the longer cut and see how different it is from this version. For now though...

3.5/5 (Entertainment: Pretty Good | Story: Pretty Good | Film: Pretty Good)

Recommendation: Rent it.

This Blu-Ray looks and sounds great.

Saw Les Miserables tonight. It definitely dragged in parts; I felt a few songs could have been excised. I thought director Tom Hooper's methods were, at times, questionable, and I didn't always agree with what he did. I liked Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, and Eddie Redmayne.

I had seen the musical more than half a lifetime ago, and I had forgotten most of the songs. The recurring musical leitmotif was pleasing to hear. Song highlights included "I Dreamed a Dream", "Red and Black", and "One Day More". The movie definitely can stir the emotions those times.
