That's arguable with Batman v Superman. Some people will prefer a variable aspect ratio; other people will find the switch from 2.40 to 1.43 to be jarring and will prefer the constant 2.40 version.

Both are equally valid opinions and only physical media caters to both of them.

All of the Pink Floyd related 4K content I have is only streaming. I will buy on disc if only ever it's offered. I have the Blu Ray versions.

I believe all my media is digital. I have a few singles (vinyl) from box sets.

I can check but the iTunes you can keep (the ones you download) may be 2.40 but HD (and like a 2GB file)

I have a 2.40 screen so it's nice to have a non shifting version or one that stays in the 2:40 frame. I keep track (best I can) which films have VAR

Not understanding this BvS switching aspect ratio from 2.40 to 1.43. That just makes the image smaller. It defeats the purpose of what was shown in IMAX theaters. By going to 1.78 that mimics what happens when seen in an IMAX theater - the images get bigger when the IMAX segments are shown. It's Home Video - no one has an IMAX screen in their home - not even the wealthiest people.

And saying to preserve the original content aspect ratio is IMO nothing but BS.

Isn't that exactly the reason?

If "make it bigger" was the scale for quality should we also get some pan & scan Be Hur to make that thought process valid?

True aspect ratio of Imax is 1.43:1 or 1.90:1

1.78:1 loses information.

I would think on this forum it is basic knowledge.

While we're talking DC...has anyone seen the Zack Snyder Justice League yet?
I heard he changed the OAR on that too. Thinking about watching it tonight on HBO max

You're free to stick with the original version on Blu-ray or 4K Blu-ray.

On a 16x9 TV . . . 1.78 is bigger than 1.43 . . . They have been doing this for years on Blu-rays: 2.40 switching over to 1.78 for 15/70 IMAX shot footage - like the TDK

1.78 does lose information but what exactly is the lost information? IMAX ratio (1.43) images are famous for excessive headroom. And 1.78 GAINES information versus 1.90. If a movie is shot using Super 35 they have to protect for the 1.85 frame if that is the desired ratio for theaters. Same for 2.40. Opening up the frame to gain image real estate accomplishes very little.

The Snyder Cut of JL was pretty epic and looked and sounded great in DV/Atmos via HBO MAX. Now I wait for the 4K disc pre-order!

Since I'm off today and finished up earlier than I expected I just popped in the 4K disc of Ten Commandments. Pizza and Moses it is!

It looks fine and definitely HDR has been cranked up a wee bit in select scenes.

Zero issues with BvS switching AR. Overall I am pleased except for the fact that the Doomsday fight wasn't shot in IMAX AR. It's a missed opportunity but maybe they didn't due to super heavy CGI.

I am still unsure about ZSJL 1.33:1.

Imagine settling down for a movie night with friends and the resolution has been downgraded? What the funk? Even if it’s just for a day, that’s unacceptable.

So let me get this straight, a director frames an Imax shot and you are going to dictate that information should be thrown away so it fills up your tv screen??

Or the gain is ok as well so long as it fits the agenda.

You see it may seem silly but I actually go with what the director filmed and preserving the vision over your convenience.

If a director is involved with a release then I appreciate their compromise though in the end I would rather the Imax ratio be preserved. This fantasy "head room" reminds me of excuses for lower quality streaming quality.

There is every explanation in the world instead of the obvious solution.

Yeah, it's one of the reasons I have not watched it all the way through. I'm waiting for the new "remastered" 4K disc to arrive before I do. I wish the 4K disc had been released earlier to prepare for ZS cut today. Then again, I don't even own Man of Steel in 4K, which I will order shortly.

I am torn because I love 3D. Switching aspect ratios make it more challenging to choose...as if more footage wasn't a hard enough choice to begin with!

I always wondered of I could swap out a side of the 3D to have most of the image be in 3D but yet see the Imax too!

How many Discs for the Snyder Cut, or did they squeeze it all on one Disc? Also to watch this 4 hour Movie will you watch it all at once or space it out, and if you do can you leave the Disc in or does the Player remember where you left off?

HBO offering the presentation in 4:3 aspect ratio I thought was strange.

Then I see this:
You will watch the Snyder Cut in 4:3 aspect ratio because HBO Max respects cinema - The Verge 3/18

Quote:
Now look, I’m not going to make fun of directors choosing less common aspect ratios (I contend that First Cow, a quiet movie about a cow, which was also shot in 4:3, was robbed of its place on the Best Picture nominees list). But this does mean that HBO Max’s highest-profile film — one that was announced before the streaming service was even available, is exclusive to the service, and is very much meant to bring in new subscribers — is presented in the aspect ratio of a ’90s TV series and leaves about half the screen empty on most modern devices.
