I got the same problem today :-( Mine finally went down :-( It's stuck with a DVD inside... tried the ejecting solution to get the disc out but didn't do anything.v Mine is the 80gig semi-backwards compatible system [Motorstorm bundle] ... How will it be to repair? I do want to keep my system... but if it's priced over $150, not sure what to do :-( All my systems still work. This is my first system that has died Damn you Sony!

Angry ps3 just got ylod

I too like many people hear just got the ylod. I've had my 80 gb ps3 since release and never had a problem til last month. I opened it a few weeks ago cleaned it and it worked for about 2 1/2 weeks. I made it a habbit to take the disc out now becuase I didn't want a bluray to get stuck like the first time. I was watching a bluray two night ago and when I was done I ejected the disc but didnt remove it from the disc slip. When I turned the system on the disc got sucked in then the system powered down with ylod FML. I ordered thermal compound and once received in a couple days I will try to fix the problem.

That is my problem. For the price to fix it to get a refurbished one. Ugh

Update:
Was able to get out my disc using the infamous hairdryer method for about 40 mins :-( Yes... painful... but as soon as I got it out, it went to YLOD again... Damn... now looking to replacing my system :-( Damn it!

Default Need help

A couple of nights ago in the middle of watching POTC4 the movie froze about 40 minutes in. I turned off the ps3 using the switch in the back. Ever since no games or movies(blu or dvd) will load. I switched out disc drives and still the same problem. Tried googling and most of what I have seen is to do a file system restore which I have done a few times. Any help would be appreciated. I've had it since '08 so there's no warranty.

Since you're still able to turn it on, it must not be the dreaded YLOD; but it doesn't sound like a simple fix either, like clearing your residual text memory. If you still get a menu, but it just won't read any discs, it sounds like it might be your optical pickup. But, that's more of an educated guess than a diagnosis.

Thanks, MoulinBlu, I'll take any input I can get. But is the optical pickup part of the drive? Because I swapped in a second drive.

I think I just got the YLOD. Was playing DCUO and it just shut off. When I try to turn it on, the green light shows for a few secs, then yellow, then blinking red. My MW3 disc is stuck inside, too. My PS3 is the fat one that I got for Christmas 2007. What should I do??

Definitely YLOD. I've been there. Call Sony to see what the cost to get a refurbished is. It should be $99 or less. Otherwise, just check out deals out there at BB, Amazon, Kmart, etc... I bought new as a refurbished via Sony is under warranty for only 90 days.

Sorry to hear about your loss, mate.

Im not sure if its been discussed here or not, but My 60 GB died this weekend. If went from standby to green, tor yellow, to blinking red in about 3 seconds. I took it apart and heard what sounded like a stuck fan/motor in the block next to the disc drive. I swapped it out with another one I just happened to have in another ps3 I had and that fixed it.

I googled the part number and it turned out to be the power supply. The seem to be $40 or so on the net. Just letting you all know in case it happens to you.

That is good to know. I haven't had that happen to me (yet).

So I finally sent in my 60gb ps3 with ylod to Sony for a refurb slim. Cost me $100 bucks but my 3 year has really gotten into the Lego games and refuses to share my ps3 with me

Since my Phat was dead I couldnt deactivate and Sony refused to do it I found a way to deactivate online.

To do this,

Go to http://store.playstation.com/login.gvm and click on Manage Account

This will take you to the Sony Entertainment Network Account Page

Log in and click on account at the top

Now click on Devices and media and then click on the down arrow on game and click deactivate all

Read the message carefully and click OK

All PS3 and PSP devices for Game are now deactivated

Video doesnt deactivate but they are more leniant on doing that one over the phone.

Default new remote not working

I got a new controller for christmas that I barely opened. For some reason it doesnt want to seem to work. I may have set it up properly. I got my ps3 used and the controllers were set up for me. I dont even know what to do when you get a new remote. Could it be defective. Somebody please help me. Can you explain what to do with a new ps3 remote, I mean do you plug it in to ps3, do you hold the power button. Im clueless. Thanks.

masob98: yes
also try holding down the center ps button (3-4 secs.?) so you can assign the controller. 1, 2, etc..

Plug the controller in with the USB cable, turn the PS3 on, then press the PS button on the controller to register it with the PS3. The lights will blink for a little bit, then stop blinking and the light will indicate the controller is on (as player 1, 2, etc). After that you can unplug the controller and use it as normal.

Just got the YLOD that turns into a flashing RLOD on my 60GB and can't get it to turn on long enough to get the damn GT5 disc out. Guess I'm screwed for doing a data transfer to a new one too.

Yeah your pretty much screwed in transfering the data out of your old 60 gig PS3 to a new one even the PSN+ Cloud for the saves. I would suggest to do what I did. Hair-dry it in a box for 40mins and hope it stays long enough to get the disc out. Believe me, I know your pain.
Damn Sony should be offering the PSN cloud service for save files to all old PS3 at least.

Lost so many save files because stupid Sony has to encrypt the damn drive. GTA IV [2nd attempt to finish and I was pretty close. GONE! Final Fantasy XIII? GONE! That was painful the first time. Castlevania Harmony Of Dissonnace? GONE 40+ Hours to get my shoes and BAM! Gone.
Still without a PS3. Will be picking one up soon. Waiting for a good sale. No hurry. I suggest just to get a new console so you'll be good for a few years. Don't spend too much on repairs because it'll break down again eventually once it YLOD on you. Such a shame.

"Damn Sony! What is wrong with you? Can't you design a good console? It's not that Hard!" LOL :-D
