It's just the same thing being said over and over and over. I think the point's been made already. Everybody has raised their complaints with this release, there's caps on caps-a-holic.

The only truth that matters to me is my own.

So as I shared previously, here's one truth. Heat. It's a movie with a new UHD release selling for $25.

What does $25 of the truth buy? You close the door, draw the shades, dim the lights, pour yourself a drink, perhaps ask someone to join you, and nothing else matters. Not what it looked like 25 years ago, and certainty not what some nobody on YT has to say about it now.

De Niro, Pacino & Crew.

Are you afraid of wasting your time? I'm not.

Worried about making a mistake? Not me.

You buy it, you watch it, you like it, you keep it, you don't, you move on.

That's it.

I don't know, but not everyone has read all there is to know about such a new release. Not all of us are scouring the internet for all that info and we might have simply just seen this release and like to voice our opinion and add to the discussion. Sorry if that's not appreciated and considered a shitshow.

Btw, I ain't the only one complaining about the so-called modern colour grade of Heat:

- Films At Home is complaining.
- Spare Change is also complaining.
- The guys at AVForums are also complaining.

And for damn good reasons, the film I saw in 1995 in the cinema had sunny daytime LA approximately look like actual sunny daytime LA. This garbage colour grade has turned that sunny LA vista into an overcast mush.

Michael Mann is doing to Heat what George Lucas did Star Wars.....and no one has the courage to tell him directly to stop it.

Lastly, it's just a thread, don't take it so serious.

Peace.
Mentioning YouTube reviews will get you the popularity boot by some of the more popular posters in these lively conversations. Not many here will appreciate any views other than their own. I appreciate it, though. They're going to be so ticked off at you, so good luck.

I’ll decide for myself when I watch this on the weekend.
You've been here a lot to know how narcissistic many on these forums can be. It's really too bad peace can't be had with discussions these days.

Wow after seeing the polarizing reactions to this I had to place an order. I’m not too familiar with Mann’s catalogue, I’ve only seen the 4K release of Collateral and absolutely loved it.

Just purchased the 4K. Are the other two discs the same exact as the 2017 set?

While on my beer run tonight i stopped at Best Buy, Walmart, Target, and Barnes & Noble and not one copy to be found. Maybe that's a sign i shouldn't buy this. Instead of watching Heat tonight on 4K i'll be enjoying my seasonal IPA that's not to "dark."

Not sure what to think here. So is the other color timing only available on the old disc? Which ones? Does anybody remember Heat being this warm?

https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=1&x...5&l=1&i=7&go=1
How the hell did this get so dim lol?

Like holy cow this is way warmer than I ever remember this film in some scenes. Contrast looks super duper weak. I was hoping this was going to be a much different release honestly.

Why would they not give this proper HDR? I don't understand what is going on lol.
Yeah, it's bad. Just go out tomorrow and look up at the sky. It's Blu like the Blu-ray 2K. This 4K has some kind of warm filter added. It's slightly ever so clearer, but the colors have been sucked out like a corpse now. Maybe call it the Dracula filter. I can't believe anyone is buying this release. Go figure. Maybe no one on these forums goes outside because they're scared of covid and don't know the sky is still blue?

Good decision. Collateral is a fun flick, but Heat is filmmaking at the highest level.

This post doesn't make much sense. Nobody wanted an Atmos mix that is vastly different than what we have lol. People already talked about compression and other things in the mix.
.. I'm sure faithful and better were on the minds of the people that did The Thing in atmos and look how that turned out ..

I think to tear down that shootout scene for atmos you would basically need to re-engineer the whole thing, esp the reverb/delay, and yes it would sound vastly different basically. I for one am relieved that they did not do this since they probably would have made it the only audio option too

It was released in 5.1 and since it's one of the best movie soundtracks of all time, 5.1 is fine by me

Get the film from Amazon or something and pair it with a nice Guinness. Problem solved!

Boost the contrast and enhancer settings, really helps make this watchable.

Guinness is to light for me. I'll stick with my IPA and 2009 Blu for now. Maybe i'll grab the 4K in a few years when it's in the Walmart $5 dump bin.

Is it a botch job? No.

Instead it is a deliberate choice by a director who can’t leave well enough alone. He is like the DeNiro character, he could have just walked away, but no he had to scratch the Waingro itch. Mann is the same, he has the tinkers itch which results in an inferior reproduction as compared to the 1995 classic.

If you have the 2009 Warners Blu-ray (flaws and all), stick with that.
Or the Japanese version which is excellent in terms of compression.

Then you'll love this as well

Whatever the year/format/settings you use, everyone needs to watch this film. I just finished my 2nd viewing ever. I believe the 1st was in 2020. Growing up, no one in my neighborhoods watched films like this. Heck... my 1st De Niro film was Analyze This. This is easily on my list of top films of all time. The shootouts give me goosebumps

I finished seeing the film, and after owning the Warner release for a decade, I liked this 4K Blu-ray.

The film is dark, but nothing that I "can't see." I accept that not all 4K Blu-ray films are going to look the same and I just see this release as the way the Director wanted to release this film.

Sure the HDR is lacking, no specular highlights and there really is no dynamic range between this and an SDR release. The jump in detail is not what I would have expected from a mid 90's movie shot on film. I found this release to be fine, no regrets about selling the Warner disc a couple of months ago.

I will say this, I wish Terminator 2 would have gotten the transfer Heat received instead of the mess that was. I would have gladly taken that version of Terminator 2.

Not a reference 4K disc, not an HDR showcase, but a good release. I don't have an issue with the changes the Director made.

On another note, I really dislike these stacked discs. The 4K disc had around 8 scratches on the edge of the disc, it didn't affect the playback, but I had to contact Amazon as I dislike having a scratched disc.

Thankfully Amazon gave me a full refund and told me to dispose of the disc, I placed another order and I hope that disc is scratch free. I dislike contacting Amazon about that because it isn't their fault, it's the companies who choose to stack these discs. I wish they would stop as it's almost a gamble if the disc will be fine or scratched up.
