Forgot to ask, does the code redeem in 4k anywhere? I assume it does but I'm making sure.

The particular shade of yellow chosen for the poster never struck me as warm and sunny. Its more on an unsettling, garish yellow.

I can't see how anyone could see this and not like it. It's like owning a 35mm print. The depth and colour saturation is beautiful.

Still not anything I consider associative with THE SHINING, save for, what?, Danny’s tennis ball?

I only associate the movie with yellow because of the poster. Nothing within the movie, unless maybe that bear mask counts lol

It's a colorful movie tho. It's obviously not themed around the weather for a movie primarily indoors that's mostly always lit, with a few outdoor daytime scenes. I find it goes uncommented a lot how important color IS in The Shining. As we know, yellow comes up more than once. The car, but especially the ball. Yellow subtly reoccurs in the movie. Kubrick wanted it that way for a reason! (nb4 "whoa so deep" which isn't what I'm getting at at all lol)

TBH it also could have been yellow because he and Saul Bass found it fit the art and logo the most and looked unsettling. There's a red version but it doesn't quite look the same. It's jarring and strange, like The Shining itself. Once I saw it I can't pair it with anything else.

It doesn't necessarily have to be representative of anything tangible in the movie itself. If it wasn't meant to link to an object, they thought it simply looked cool and fit the mood. The tone of the movie is reflected in the poster. It's strange, it's weird. It's a mood.

So good, sooo good. I normally only watch it once a year to keep it fresh but I'm watching it twice this year will wait for first snowfall later this month

I don't normally notice the difference I'm no picture connoisseur but the image seemed to have more depth to it with the HDR like you were there. Little more dim compared to old bluray but so much more detail, very happy w this release!

Just file it under “a choice I’ve always found odd and ill-fitting that I personally wouldn’t have made”, but I’m certainly accustomed to it after 40 years.

That's fair. Personally I found it a fitting choice I would have made and has been inspirational on my own work.

it's a dig/hint for us and King I think
Jack's car is yellow because in the book it was red
and Kubrick shows a crushed red car

the sun's white but we see it as yellow at times
and the sun shines too

(reminds me of Clint line, 3 types of sun, Sunshine, Sunflower's and SOB's)

It could be yellow because the ball, and car, and chair are yellow. A dig at King. It could be yellow because the movie is colorful and color is important.
It could be yellow because, like pointed out above, it's associated with insanity. It could be yellow because it looks jarring and creepy. It could be all of the above. It could be representative of The SHINING itself, also. The movie occupies a world of uncanny uncertainty all its own. So does the poster.
Ill fitting? Nah.

This is what takes it above and beyond for me, like Bass' work as a whole. He's a master of representing things with abstract moods that aren't formally tangible. I think he hit well on the mark.

Custom art? I never understood how anyone could get into that. I've seen some very nice custom art done, but that was online and wasn't printed out. I think that's the problem for me. I used to custom art for cd's and the printing labels for these never made the whole look any more than what it was: a cheap, homemade burned disc. I never could get myself as into it as I would an actual physical release. Maybe it's because I didn't have professional printing equipment and the tools to do it right.

Even "bootlegs" that I would purchase never had the same look or quality of an official release. Say what you will about the artwork released for some of these movies or albums, but they are at the very least official and professionally done. Works much better than anything I can do or buy from someone that did it themselves. There really is an art to this. It's no wonder "art direction" is mentioned in a lot of liner notes. It's amazing how simple art can be beautiful but botched across different platforms (VHS, DVD, CD, LP Cassette, etc.).

It really comes down to using good equipment. You can literally duplicate "professional" print jobs in the home but you gotta have the means to do it. It can be near indistinguishable. There's a reason why so many are into it. Plain paper and an inkjet printer alone aren't doing the job.

BTW, "customs" aren't necessarily fan art. A custom could be the original poster art, which is what I'd like for this and always opt for. It's great stuff really.

It'd be great if the big studios could start offering double-sided inserts with original poster or key art but they don't and opt for awful stand-ins that are every so often insulting to the movie. WB's new Gremlins art is absolutely atrocious but their Oz Steelbook art is gorgeous.

I thought the yellow came from the exclusive cheese sandwich diet Jack Nicholson was on in order to get in to character for this movie.

As you can tell by his demeanor in the movie, he really didn't like cheese sandwiches.
