If you have the 35th anniversary disc, this is better in every way (well, it's an exact match in the audio department IIRC).
I already got that answer from others. Went to Target and got the last copy.

I noticed you have the blu-ray of 2001. Why? It doesn't come with the original 4-track stereo.

Plenty of discs in my collection lack the original audio. In many cases, I have found such original tracks and synced them myself. In all of those cases, I have purchased whatever disc is the primary source for the video of my audio-corrected version, because I don't support piracy, as a general rule.

Yes, movies are quite the extreme hobby of mine. I love them. I collect them. I watch them, and when I do, I prefer to have the original audio when available.

Crazy that someone would put some effort into a hobby that they love...

Glad we've resorted to ad hominem.

Extreme hobby and yet you only own as many movies as I did when I was about 3 years into collecting movies I love.

I guess the ironic part is, by buying the very discs you're complaining about (and then "fixing" on your own terms) you're telling those very same companies that you're okay supporting them not putting on original audio.

It's gives me quite the chuckle.

Well, when it's all you're talking about....I just decided it would be fairly easy to see how hypocritical you are.

Took me all of 10 seconds, about the same time it takes you to replace a few minutes of audio.

I've only been collecting for about 2 years, lol. Just got out of college earlier this year, so haven't had money for very long.

I buy them because in most cases, the discs are excellent work, as far as visual restorations go. I can then respectfully request that future releases include the original audio. It seems like most releases do include the original audio these days, though, so our side seems to be prevailing, slowly.

I don't understand why.

It doesn't seem beyond the realm of reasonableness to wish the original audio be included with movies, and to express some disappointment when that does not happen.

"Our side" referring to people who prefer not to erase the work done by a film's original sound designers/engineers. I'm all for a new Atmos remix, but not at the expense of the original soundtrack.

Then by all means, enjoy your lossy mono.

Wrong again. You have a preference. That does not make one version an error or erroneous.

The only reason for including a mono track at all would be to include the original audio. This fold down serves no purpose. In addition, it was previously corrected because, like I said, it was a mistake.

TBH it's been getting a lot more prevalent in the 4K forums lately, especially whenever a forums "personality" decides to come over into here and dispense their well-worn schtick. Not that it's all been sweetness and light, plenty of us can be nasty pieces of work when we so desire (guilty as charged) but **** me, it's been one jackass after another these past few months. Never any middle ground, just people being douchebags and refusing to see the other side's point of view. Typical forum then really, but boy it was nice to away from that shit while it lasted.

The mono on the 35th Anniversary Edition (I'm presuming that's what you used) is lossy.

I generally stay away from posting on this site, as I've been here since 2009 and most people probably have no idea who I am.

But when a mono debate literally takes up pages and pages in a 4K post, it gets awfully grating very quickly.

The mono on the 35th anniversary edition is actually the same fold down that is featured on this 4K disc. The mono on the Shout! Factory box set is the original audio, but lossy IIRC (could be wrong there).

I used the lossless mono audio from the Criterion LaserDisc. It sounds lovely.

EDIT: Just for further clarification, the 35th anniversary's mono was the same fold down that is featured on the 4K disc. Because this was a mistake, it was corrected for the SF box set release. That is why the fold down's reappearance is so confusing: it had previously been fixed.

It's not so confusing when you realise that a different company handled the boxset. Shout went out of their way to source the correct audio (and also sweeten the 7.1 by "fixing" the pitch shift in the walk and talk scene) but Anchor Bay are the ones who put out the incorrect mono on the standalone 35th Blu-ray and they never fixed it. Lionsgate inherited Anchor Bay's elements when they bought them and, probably because there was no in-house fix noted for the 35th, they went and used the exact same audio masters albeit with fresh encodings.

Immensely frustrating then, but given how home video departments pretty much work with skeleton crews at this point - young 'uns at that, who wouldn't recognise the original audio for Halloween even if it stabbed them in the neck with a knitting needle - then I'm not so flabbergasted that this happened.
