Steve46,

But the second half is the most flawed part of the film. The airport sequence borders on the improbable. If you didn't roll your eyes during the computer scene or the run way scene, I just don't know

I was very interested throughout the first 3/4, flaws in characterization and all, so naturally I was let down when they tried to tighten the screws

Flight

A very good drama, very realistically depicting the dark side of addiction.

Good stuff all the way around. Acting was darn good from everyone. Denzel was damn good, BUT, I did not find his performance to be as powerfull and emotional as some have. I have seen the "addict/alcoholic escaping denial" done better. Good story though. Well written and well told.

The Plane flight during turbulence and it's subsequent "Landing" were good stuff. Great Calm vs Panic dialogue.

Directing and editing were basic and well done. Nothing fancy, just good work. I liked that.

Don Burgess had some challenging cinematography moments during the flight scenes and the results are darn good.

I give the movie a solid 4/5

I am unable to comment on PQ and AQ at this time.

Yeah, the runway scene was a bit silly.

I thought the scene that was too far for me was Alan Arkin and John Goodman
[Show spoiler]being unable to get to the office to pickup the phone.

Just click "Buy Now". Don't worry about the premium price. Think of it like a Criterion purchase.

What????????? I did not pick up on that. And, thinking about it now, why would she? The letter seemed to offer Pat a
[Show spoiler]little hope
. Why would Tifanny do that, since she truly wanted
[Show spoiler]to be with Pat? Just to keep him dancing? Eh......
Yes,
[Show spoiler]to keep him coming back and keep her around as the middle man. It was obvious to me because of her sharp and manipulative personality.

The ending was
[Show spoiler]pretty predictable though, when Pat told his wife "Seeya" and confessed his love for Tifanny. But thats OK with me. I like mushy happy endings.
And how
[Show spoiler]the father won the bet, everything came together, that last score that we know is going to be a 5, and hugs and kisses and queue music. I'm a fan of the ending too though. So cliche but it didn't bother me at all because it was satisfying and rewarding.
I might buy this on blu-ray.

Just watched Cloud Atlas and now have the task of trying to put it into sellable words...and the only thing that comes to mind is Susan Sarandon as a cyborg doctor man and the fact that Al would unquestionably love this thing to bits

So Denzel or DDL? I won't be able to see Lincoln in time for the awards but I think the Best Picture race will be between Argo and Lincoln.

I hate that you can't really recommend it to others without recommending the entire trilogy. It stands on its own obviously, but you know what I mean.

Yes, I do. That final scene has so much more impact. It's only 5.5 hours to watch all three though.

Between those two I'll say that I enjoyed DDL more. But... I have not seen Jackmans or Joaquins performaces, so I cant vote.

Ohh you're doing the 4-movie thing? The links there are to already released titles.

You need to see Les Mis. I guess it's almost out, but it was a good theatrical experience.

Yeah that's another one that had me groaning. In some interview or roundtable, I think, Ben Affleck admitted to the artificial upping the stakes that occurs in the final act.

However, it's still a riveting drama, Argo deserves credit for moral tightrope it walks. It could have been a Jingoistic, half witted thriller that would put Ben's work with Michael Bay to shame, but instead it's a well researched, politically balanced film that acknowledges the small details that comprise a larger than life true story.

Al would love this thing.

As for me I think the film is a total success. It's a blockbuster that equates more with depth. It's not that any one of the simple stories are deep, but together they form a fun puzzle with a touch of levity and camp to make it palatable.

I don't understand how some critics dismiss this film, yet praise Avatar or other lunkheaded blockbusters. Cloud Atlas isn't an Italian Neorealist film, it's a spectacle whose chief virtues are how far it streches the possibilities of the medium (especially exposition, scope & time).

On a technical level (with a few hiccups) it is an astonishing work of art: directing, editing, score, sound design.....

Just saw Argo, a solid 9/10. Really loved it. Between this and The Town Ben Affleck is shaping up to be one of the best directors working today. Honestly I hope this wins Best Picture tomorrow.

Default A Movie A Day: Day 309

Brink (2010)
dir. Shawn Christensen
The Good: Gorgeous photography. Nice special effects. Fitting score.

The Bad: Seems more focused on style and effects. Science is a little wonky.

The Bottom Line: Director Shawn Christensen (whose latest effort, Curfew, looks like the favorite to win this year's live-action short Oscar) shows he's got a great eye. But judging by his résumé, he's a subpar writer (he was responsible for the 2011 Taylor Lautner vehicle, Abduction). Worth a look for sci-fi/romance fans.
