If you think they pay that close attention to everything then what message are you sending by watching it on Netflix?

They are making more money from my watching it on Neflix than they ever will from a used purchase on ebay. Sometimes watching a show on Netflix leads to a disc purchase and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes watching a show on TV leads to a disc purchase and sometimes it doesn't. Watching on Netflix got me to try the product and that's half the battle in getting me to buy the product.

It worked with Stranger Things. I bought both available seasons on 4K disc on their release day after having first seen them on Netflix.

I bought them both in 4K on release day because I knew that without ample support they wouldn't get any more physical releases (which proved to be true).

Watching a show on Netflix sends the message that they should put more shows on Netflix.

Buying a new disc sends the message that they should release more shows on disc.

Buying a used disc doesn't send any message because the studios don't have access to the sales data.

I'd rather send no message than the wrong message.

Season 3 may still get a physical release. Each previous season release was timed to promote the airing of the newest season. When the premier of season 4 approaches, we may see a release date for season 3.

And then again, maybe we won't. Netflix produced way too many copies of seasons 1 & 2 on disc resulting in their being sold later at fire sale prices.

And watching a show on TV encourages more shows on TV. Duh.

But experiencing a show, regardless of how, can result in people buying that show. Having seen it, they may like it enough to want to own it, but buying a show blindly is nowhere near as likely. Almost every TV show in my collection, 1165 seasons worth, is something that I first saw on either TV or streaming. Seeing them is what motivated me to buy them in the first place.

When someone buys a used disc that means that they did not buy a new disc. The new disc going unsold sends a message to the studio that the disc is not wanted. That's the message that a used purchase sends.

The existence of the used market makes blind buying way more likely for me. I know that there is very little risk because if I don't like it I can easily sell the disc. If I couldn't sell used discs I wouldn't buy anywhere near as many new discs.

Additionally buying the first season of a show because it's available cheap (often because it's used) makes me more likely to buy later seasons close to launch for a higher price.

Buying used stuff cheaply removes the risk to blind buying, but it earns the studios squat. Making squat does not encourage more disc releases.

If you also buy those later seasons used for cheap, and you most likely would, the studios still make squat.

I've often bought shows that I only had mild interest in used for cheap. But sometimes I ended up liking them and wanted to show my support. I therefore bought later seasons brand new at launch.

Not true at all. My watching on Netflix led to my buying Stranger Things seasons 1 & 2 on 4K disc and it will lead to my buying season 3 if they ever offer it. I also bought Roma after first watching it on Netflix. I might buy The Irishman, too, but I have yet to watch it; I haven't heard many good things about it except as a cure for insomnia.

Seeing something beforehand, whether at the cinema, on streaming, or on TV has led to the majority of my purchases. This was true decades before streaming even existed; I would see something and then I would decide to buy my own copy. I have been doing exactly this since about 1985.

I just want to point out to those that join this thread later that our temporary monopoly of the conversation occurred in the wee hours of the morning when few other people were around. I will not do this during prime time.

But it's clearly not true with everything. You are most likely going to watch all 8 seasons of Arrow but won't buy any of them on disc.

I think you have a very inaccurate view of what I buy used. I frequently try shows by buying cheap used sets (especially if they've already been out for years by the time I discover them) but once I know that I like a show I buy later seasons brand new near launch.

Because I recommended you buy a cheap used set in order to try a show before committing to the full series you jumped to the conclusion that I must buy everything used.

So what? I have seen many seasons of shows on TV without buying them because they did not have rewatch value and/or I did not like them enough to buy them. I have also watched some of them to keep people company. The same is true with movies; I have seen many of those on TV and I declined to buy them.

But I have bought 1165 seasons of TV shows on disc and I bought them all brand new. I bought a few thousand movies after watching them first, too.

Wanting to see something does not always mean that I want to own it.

No more inaccurate than your ridiculous assumption that I stop buying discs while I am watching something on Netflix.

You have since deleted that post, but your silly comment is preserved when I quoted you:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...ostcount=31783

I have a collection of this size because I kinda like having a variety of content to choose from. TV and streaming expands that variety many fold.

I've never understood why with a collection of 6,760 movies and 1,165 seasons on disc you still need to seek out other forms of media.

Nice deflection, but if I want pizza, the size of my pizza-less larder does nothing to satisfy my craving.

The fact that we each continue to add to our already sizable collections demonstrates that we all crave things that we don't have.

In this analogy if pizza is available on physical media then I would always have it available.

If pizza is not available on physical media I would never want pizza because I would never try pizza and therefore I would never know I like pizza. I probably would barely even know what pizza is.

That's why being open to all food delivery methods expands one's horizons.

I'll always want to try new things. I will buy the new thing once I am sure that I like it.

With that I bid you goodnight. I will never get my necromancer to paragon level 1000 if I keep chatting.
