Do you have any quotes of him saying he doesn’t care about home releases?

That reviewer didn't even knew about Saving Private Ryan, source wise.

AVSForum reviews are on my blacklist for couple of years now.

Oh dear! Even the first three were upconverted. This is why they look so similar to the 2D Blu-ray. They probably used the same 2000-era source. Shameful, considering they made boatloads of money from the franchise, especially from the horrible 2D B! They couldn't even bother with 4K scans for 4K discs. If they weren't bothered with a proper high quality scan then it's too much to expect they'll bother with properly colour correcting these films.

If these are really upconverts from 2k then they really have ripped us off

That goes against what Zoom (Universal) said a few months ago about the first three being from 4K transfers and JW being a 2K DI up-convert.

But did they really specify that?
In this tweet: https://twitter.com/zoom_uk/status/9...018050561?s=21
they only really say that they are based on scans from the original camera negative. They don't specify the resolution of said scan or how old that scan is. Or have they given additional info about this?

They never specified whether the UHDs were scanned in 4K from the negative.

What I meant was he is too busy crafting new films that excite him and that home video mastering isn't something he'd want to spend his valuable time on. Others have that responsibility but they don't do the job well. That's not Spielberg's fault.

Even if they are all 2K upscales, Universal won't do anything. Universal doesn't care.

I sure would like some confirmation on this matter.

Surely Universal must have known beforehand the kind of backlash this would mean?

At least I've enjoyed Fox's (admittedly limited) UHD output far more.

They don't care about the films and definitely not about buyers/fans. I think we'll be seeing this HD to 4K upscale job for as long as Universal has their hands on Jurassic Park. Shame, shame!

I don't think it looks similar to the 2011 Blu-ray at all. I think it looks far better. That by no means suggests the transfer is a home run. It isn't at all. There are flaws with the transfer. Still, it's quite good for what it is and for the price that I paid. I'm overall satisfied with it. Definitely, a worthy upgrade. Especially, since I didn't have it anymore in my collection.

The review of JP3 on AVForums states it comes from a recently scanned 4K DI so even reviews from different places are contradicting each other but those slider comparisons are quite damning.

Once the rights expire, any home video manufacturer can get their hands on it. How many years do rights usually last for home video?

I don't think you can say for sure it's the early 2000's scan... however... I do think you can say with near 100% assuredness this is no 4K scan, and don't look 'fresh'. And it likely isn't a native 4K master.

I'd say it's the most recent 2K scan in their archive, upscaled to 4K. This makes sense why it was given a barebones HDR pass and a helping of DNR to smooth. Auto button rife on this one -- Sound is all that excels...

Again, though, just because Spielberg didn't work on this doesn't mean he hates JP or is responsible for what we got! He is just an older guy. Likely cares less about reference quality of home video with the amount he's overseen in his last half of his career. Naturally prefers to put his time into new projects theatrically, and the rare landmark movies like CE3K, ET, Jaws from the catalog that are personal to him.

He rarely, if ever, works with universal anymore. This is a case of Universal not being held to a standard; so like BTTF they are dragging their heels on delivering a reference scan so they have something to justify double dipping later...
