It takes effort to seek out new things. As such a huge physical media supporter why are you putting that effort into seeking out new things on streaming?

I'll never get anywhere close to ever trying everything on physical media so why should I bother searching for new content in inferior forms?

What if you were told that you could never have pizza again?

In that case I would prefer if I never tried pizza in the first place.

Not me; I would rather cherish the memory than to have never experienced it.

With all my movies, TV shows, video games, and albums I can cherish my memories and continue to experience them. I wouldn't want it any other way.

Buying used discs does not encourage more disc releases; from the studio's point of view it helps to make the case for digital distribution.
100% agree. The only disc I have bought used in the last two years is The Wizard Of OZ in 3D with flat version also. Couldn’t get hold of it new. Having said that, it came in excellent condition, shrink wrapped, discs are immaculate and the cover and case perfect. Very surprised.

But yeah, only 5 of my discs are used.

Streaming Pizza is completely unsatisfying

The fight against streaming media has a few merits.

1- Streaming quality is lower than the quality you get from physical media if said physical media is an option
2- You can not own virtual assets at all and therefore they are no fun to collect

Maybe the quality of streaming will go up. Certainly streaming is the only option for some content so the gap in quality is a bit irrelevant.

These days, I like to collect movies and while you can sort of do that with iTunes or Vudu the fact they can take your access away at any time for any reason is enough to make me want to collect physical media instead.

So, .... I do both like most people. I can't hold back the tide and when I want to watch the SuperBowl I'm not going to wait for it to be released on disc.

I still enjoy collecting movies. Blu Rays are forever.

I think Heath at Cereal at Midnight said it best when he said something to the effect of "I'm not a disc collector. I'm a movie collector".

Discs just happen to be what the movies are on. I'm not not tied to the disc. I bought CDs for music from their inception because I wanted music in the best possible quality. Once MP3 came around, I still bought CDs because I didn't want lossy audio despite the convenience. Once FLAC came out, everything changed for me. I ripped all of my CDs in FLAC and any new album that comes out, I get them in FLAC.

Ultimately for me, it comes down to quality and ownership. If I could get 1:1 copies of movies digitally with no DRM, I would switch to digital. I just need to own and control the file which is not going to happen with movie companies. Technically, I could convert my discs to MKV files which is similar to FLAC for audio but for movies, it's just easier to use the disc. If I'm going to sit on a couch and watch a movie for 2 hours, there's nothing inconvenient to me to grab a disc off the shelf and pop it in.

I've never been a casual with anything I'm interested in and I don't understand the mindset of people that are. There are people that will look on Netflix for a movie or Spotify for a song and if it's not there, they just shrug their shoulders and move on to the next. I'm not one of those people. I can't imagine being beholden to services for music, games and movies. I know exactly what I want to watch, play and listen to and want access to it at all times.

Streaming services in general just feel like the new Blockbuster to me. In my eyes, it's just renting and trying out the material. If I like it, I'll buy it even if I have access to it through those services.

It's just interesting how people treat things like services and so casually now. Imagine paying $500 a month for your car and never owning it. On top of that, imagine if they could just take it away from you one day because they lost the rights for the model.

Anyway, I'm getting on to a different rant. Basically, I'll support any format that gives me the best possible quality and lets me own that. If it's a file or a disc, it doesn't matter. I just need to be the one that controls it. Whether it's a file sitting on a hard drive that I can move around freely or a disc on a shelf.

Long story short, you love quality and ownership and it’s only disc that truly gives you that.

Not really. I'd be perfectly fine with digital copies of all of my movies if they were 1:1 in quality. The disc doesn't matter. Ownership and quality does. If I have a file that I can freely move around, copy, backup, etc., I consider that ownership.

I don't need a shelf of movies and I'm constantly paranoid about running out of space. It just turns out, that's the best and really the only way to go about it with movies currently.

Substitute "streaming" with "pay TV" and almost everything that you said applies to it as well, yet most people here find watching TV to be satisfying even when viewing non sports content.

I buy used all the time. In fact, yesterday, I bought a used copy of the German import "Henry & June" on BD off of eBay.

There has been at least 3 versions of digital file ownership, the original Vudu (before Walmart), Sony and Kaleidescape. Vudu never really went anywhere, the Sony files were really locked down and no one had any success cloning a Sony drive created by the FMP-X10. The FMP's stopped working a few months after Sony closed their movie store. Don't know anything about Kaleidescape and their DRM.

For me, for the most part ownership has to be a physical form because that is the only way the First Sale Doctrine will apply.

Beware
I see that Kino Lorber release of Good Bad and Ugly trilogy 4K is being reported to have gassy cases, filthy insides. Media in some examples loose. See the 4K thread. It’s a limited run, maybe before this indie has to close due to complaints.
Example
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=2013

Even our favorite party says it’s really bad

So if you buy a new case it’s not necessarily going to be covered with this much shite. And FWIW I see it all the time on BD cases too, not as bad as this admittedly but the translucency of the blue plastic means that it doesn’t show up nearly as much to the naked eye.

Never saw that before. It appears to be a Vifa Elite case so it would be interesting to see a response from Vifa.

I had a party claiming Oppo players finally needed a FW update to play this title from a post on AVS, and then I looked at our thread. Like you never experienced this in all my collection.

I used to buy used a lot. I cleaned out video stores that were going out of business or I wouldn't have over a thousand titles.

I don't like it as much anymore because it's risky in terms of the item condition. I guess I'm more picky now about the disc condition because if it's not good that's not good.

In terms of digital ownership ... iTunes does let you download files but it's HD or SD only and there is DRM which isn't a problem depending on how you want to use them.
