Makes sense, as 1998's Revival of Evangelion version (consisting of Death[True]² + EoE) has been treated as the canonical revision of the original NGE films ever since the Japanese "Renewal" DVD releases from 2003. Even Rebirth was dropped from the 2003 and 2007 DVD box sets and only reappeared in the 2015 BD and DVD box sets as an enticement for previous owners in Japan to pony up for yet another release.

Sure I'd like to have the original 1997 version of Death, not to mention the previously WOWOW-exclusive "Death[True]" version found on the Japanese "Archives of Evagnelion" DVD box set. The thing is though that even if Studio Khara was willing to make those variants available, it would obviously increase the total licensing cost by that much more which unfortunately makes it not at all worth it from a financial perspective given that there's literally no demand in the West for multiple cuts of Death beyond a handful of hardcore completionists like myself.

I'm more than two weeks late but Dybex announced through a book that the series is coming to blu ray in France soon. I will have the original french dub rather than the new Netflix one and we currently do not know which subs it will use or what will be included in the release.

How are the quality of HK 1.11/2.22/3.33 blu-rays? Compared to JP or Funimation?

Same. They even had an entire anime section. A surprise for sure.

I guess that's good for those who don't know any better (or need an English dub), but the Hong Kong release of 3.33 is far superior in terms of video encode as compared to Funi's domestic release.

  • 1.11: All three releases (JP/US/HK) are suitable.
  • 2.22: JP and US are suitable, HK is visually inferior due to using a single-layer BD25 disc.
  • 3.33: JP and HK are suitable, US is visually inferior due to poor encoding.

Note that only the JP release of 3.33 has the "Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo" short.

Thanks for the info. I guess for best English Sub experience, it would be HK 1.11/3.33 and US 2.22.

Seeing how expensive the US release of 1.11 is on the secondary market (well over $100 on average for successfully completed listings), that is indeed the exact recommendation that I'd give for a prospective Rebuild buyer in the US or Canada.

Same. I saw someone post an empty shelf they spotted with an Evangelion label on it a while back, then the other day I happened to go to Target and saw a bunch of copies of 3.33 with the same label. I wonder if Funimation is clearing out old stock before their license expires or is bought out or something.

That same post also had a picture of an empty space labeled for Ultraman Ace, incidentally, and that was there when I saw 3.33 as well. That's the only time I've seen one of the Mill Creek Ultra Series releases in a store so far.

Again, at this time, Evangelion 3.33 may be victim to stocking issues because of what's going on with FUNimation's master distributor. RightStuf has yet to delist it, a sign they might be getting more in. If RightStuf, FUNimation, and a bunch of other retailers delist it like they did with 1.11, then the sky is actually falling.

As often as people want to proclaim "the death of physical media" around the other boards, it always makes me happy when a new anime endcap or sectional pops up at one of the major retailers.

At least they aren't in spider wraps and plastic coffins ruining the slipcovers and such.

I wonder if this release includes an extra blank Bluray disk in case the creator decide to release another alternate ending to the serie? :-)

My local Target never gets these anime displays. Usually only the locations a couple of towns over get them.

Same with Walmart nowadays. I was grocery shopping at Walmart last week and the physical media shrunk again, it's less than half an aisle now. New release endcap and half an aisle. Less than Target and Best Buy. I was surprised because Walmart had the best selection until a year or two ago.

My Target has like 30 copies of Birthday Wonderland and that's it. My brick and mortar stores all suck for physical media now.

I don't even bother to look anymore. I pass by the department on my way to another and glance down it. Literally nothing to see in stores anymore.

Yeahhhhhh that's an exception - not the rule.

I live in Utah's largest city, Salt Lake City, and none of our Best Buy's, Walmarts or Targets have an anime "section" any more. (They just get thrown into the mix) In fact, all my Best Buy locations (I think we have four) have reduced their BD's to a single one-sided isle. (meaning it's blu rays on left side of the isle, but something else on the right)

Best Buy won't even dedicate a whole isle to their Blu Rays anymore. Circa 2012 - there used to be a minimum of four double-sided isles of BD's.

Times have changed.

The Jordan Landing location has several bluray shelves. They always look post-Back Friday picked over though. Last time I was there the anime was at least organized together, even if it consisted of a Sailor Moon movie, Hunter x Hunter, and some Gkids films.

My local non-super Target just put up its Anime endcap and it mirrored the picture here. Same titles.
