Wow....they really did ruin the terror the score brought. So much detail lost in the 5.1. Typical.

The other thing I don't understand with trying to get older film's in with the surround game, is that there are so many sound bars that do LPCM to such a high standard.
Say what you will about say Bose. For what you can pay, you will get something when set up correctly will deliver some of the best quality PCM money can buy. So studios could include original audio, and put something like perfect for sound bars next to it. |

After reading all of the praise for the transfer (video) I went to BB and picked up the Steelbook yesterday and watched it last night. Thanks everyone. Easily one of the best 4k's I own.

I compared new BD DTS Audio mix with the last BD's PCM 5.1 and was mostly impressed
I have 2 players hooked up to receiver, so easy for me to compare by changing input strange voices and animal sounds in opening track and other music tracks are the best I've ever heard them, the heartbeat LFE in room 237 is insane ![]() everything in music seems much more pronounced but comparing with PCM 5.1 the DTS track is less balanced overall, so it does go a bit thin at times and then explodes the reviewer on here mentioned something similar in his review still for me the overall increase in the music tracks quality and frequency range, mean I definitely prefer this mix both this and Apoc Now are making me want 4k upgrade, sooner rather than later as I can tell by caps UHD looks much better even without the HDR the caps don't show, seems as though they concentrated on UHD with The Shining and not so much the BD, upside is at least encoding and bit rate seemed good for this BD, and it looked more Filmic overall and mostly better colours than previous BD ![]() |

I’ve actually never seen it! Since I’ve gone this long without seeing it, I may as well wait for the 4K transfer. I’ve seen most of his films but still haven’t gotten to some. I’m going to check out The Killing on Prime one of these nights too. Billy Friedkin mentioned it as one of the films that left a lasting impact on him.

Yesterday I praised the video but forget to say something about the audio.
I never owned the Blu-ray but this was a powerful HDMA track. It’s certainly front heavy but the score completely envelops you for the majority of the film. It’s surprisingly spacious just like the Overlook’s high ceilings and wide open spaces. When the terrifying score really kicks in, its frenetic! The last act in particular is a full assault on the senses. The dynamic range is fantastic. I don’t think even the most discerning fans will find much to complain about here. Dialogue isn’t as crisp as the best out there but you have to keep in mind that is nearly 40 year old sound design and it must be judged according to its peers from that era. |

and done right. Depth, detail and color reproduction look outstanding in this. The level of grain is spot on. All of the lights, chandeliers, etc look so wonderful here it’s truly jarring. Never has The Shining looked so good and hard to imagine it looking any better!
