Doorbal was definitely portrayed more as a complete idiot and less as a sociopathic psycho. And the movie didn't touch on the female investigator, the other people of the "Sun Gym gang", and obviously took some liberties with the authenticity for the sake of exposition and narrative, but honestly it seems like the rest of the film was pretty dang accurate... That's unbelievable. One thing I wasn't sure about was that Dwayne Johnson's character in real life: the video above barely mentioned him. Was his part exacerbated in the film? Or did they avoid talking too much about his shenanigans because of the anonymity and the fact that he didn't want to remember what he did? |

Jesus. The 48 Hours segment didn't mention the grilling. I guess it really is true ![]() It's unfortunate that the victims/survivors of the victims are pissed about this being labeled a dark comedy. Though I have to say, if they're basing that solely on the trailer, they should be somewhat relieved that the trailers made it look much more like a comedy than it ended up being. And it doesn't make the bad guys sympathetic or positive in any way. The only one that comes close is Dwayne Johnson's character. It is made quite clear that Ed Harris' character was supposed to be the positive person to root for. He was never in danger, he was never portrayed as a bad person, and he was just... a really cool guy. There was absolutely no issue with distinguishing between who we were supposed to root for and who we were supposed to despise, though I will admit that they definitely dialed back the psychotic nature of Doorbal and Lugo a tad too much. Just a tad. |

Against my better judgment, I rented this film. I needed a day to process this, because I'm for the most part Anti-Michael Bay, and I wanted to be in the most happiest mood before watching Pain and Gain.
But for some reason, I walked away from this viewing feeling less livid than expected. Bad Boys II and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen are still THE Bay movies that'll get on my nerves, and this film isn't near that low of a level. Maybe because all the mean-spirited, pig-headed insanity that exuded all through this film feels deliberate, like I'm suppose to be bewildered by the whole thing. And let's face it, a movie where dumb bodybuilders commit crime for greed and vanity in a blind, misguided quest for the ambiguous American dream: this is PERFECT material for Michael Bay, and I can see why this would be his dream project. And while I don't hate the film, it does raise my eyebrows plenty of times. Dwayne Johnson was the best thing about the film, and he was the ONLY thing to give me a couple of laughs, because otherwise the movie was funny. It was completely infantile, which is par for the course in a Bay movie, but most of the 'humor' involved feels inappropriate given that it's based on real-life events. I guess that it's a dark comedy, but it was such a farce that it constantly treads the line between cynical wit and bad taste. I just don't think this kind of story should be made for cheap laughs, but Bay loves cheap laughs, and again, I anticipated that he would not restraint himself from his brand of humor. So whatever, it is a Bay film through and through, and there's nothing else to say about it. |

[Show spoiler] is almost exactly how it happen, when I read about it in the real story I laughed because these guys were idiots, I mean the criminals [Show spoiler] and they PLANED (yes, they actually planed this in real life) to kidnap the first guy [Show spoiler] How could you not make that into a dark comedy.

BTW, your signature, that's ONE of the few things that had me chuckled, if only because of how blunt it was executed. |

My signature is a line from The Cinema Snob's review of Water Power. I loved the movie as much Brad "The Cinema Snob" Jones did, which is why my review for this movie sounds like his because I agreed with it 100% |

And that's your opinion and I'll respect that, but in my opinion, I love, love, love this movie and like I said my opinion on Michael Bay's other movies is I either didn't care for them(the Bad Boys movies, The Rock) or flat out hated them (Pearl Harbor, the Transformers movies), this is the only Michael Bay movie I liked.

And you'll certainly have a place among other admirers here. Not a lot of people really hated this film like some of his past works; even its dissenters were somewhat forgiving about the film. There are other films this year that are more worthy of critical derision.
