![]() Some are definitely critical of the PQ, others just buy Criterion blu-rays because they’re supposed to be better but don’t really have a setup or critical eye that would reveal the compression issues. |

We have already entered "is it really a problem if [most -insert term of person here-] don't notice?" phase of the thread. Oh boy.

I for one just want good picture and sound quality in my Blu ray and 4k. I can see and hear the difference. But I get your point. And as bad as for example Halloween 4k is encoded, I still enjoy the new Shout 4k and believe it is an improvement while wishing it had been encoded better.

I get that people are tired of the handwringing here but idk what to say, those caps show some of the worst compression i've seen this year. About equal to the Shout Halloweens, the grain structure is crunchy and soupy looking. With DV it should look better but it's shocking how bad the compression is compared to their other discs.
It's fine if you can't see it or don't notice it, as the compression will likely only crush out the finest of details and the refinement of the grain structure, but it's there. If you want to argue that since you don't notice it doesn't matter, cool, go right ahead. But we're gonna nitpick and discuss how the disc looks from a standpoint thats more technical and less 'average consumer'. The encoding makes an actual visible difference, regardless of if it's visible to you personally or not. |

I’m just glad I didn’t preorder this. It’s not only a headache to return it (assuming whatever store you bought it from even allows you to do so; i.e. some stores only allow an exchange for the same product but not a return; and some that do allow a return make you pay for the shipping to send it back) but after The Silence of the Lambs and now this one, the pattern Kino is now setting for their releases is sadly not a good one.

This arrived today. I'll go through and compare with my great MGM Blu-ray tonight after work and see how it looks. Hopefully it's not too complaint-worthy, I wouldn't want to be too inconvenient to other consumers considering I only spent $29 after sales tax.

I ordered mine through Bull Moose. It has about a half an inch scratch on the 4K UHD deep enough to reflect light, which means I'm going to have to return it for a replacement.
