Iger also announced plans for the new series of Star Wars films that day. “We’ve got a lengthy treatment that comes with this that we feel really good about and the film is in what I’ll call early-stage development right now,” the Disney boss said.

It isn't Lucas' treatment, in the sense of that famed 9-film saga he once envisioned and then abandoned. It's Arndt's and LucasFilm's, and I'm sure Mr. Lucas gave input.
If they follow what Lucas originally planned, then these clues may indicate the story direction of Star Wars 7-9:

"STAR WARS is really three trilogies, nine films. The first trilogy covers the fall of the Republic and the rise of the Empire, the middle trilogy the fall of the Empire, and the last trilogy involves the rebuilding of the Republic. It won't be finished for probably another 20 years." - George Lucas, 1980

"George Lucas once told me I'd play the Obi-Wan-type character in Episode VII, sort of passing on the Excalibur down to the next generation. He said that it would come out around 2011." - Mark Hamill

Personally I was hoping for a reboot sequel like Star Wars: Legacy, but I doubt that will happen.

Lucas had seemingly told the actors on set of the first Star Wars that it was planned as three trilogies, and that's why Hamill had mentioned that. Unfortunately he then made a complete U-turn and claimed it had never been 9 films, and that people were making it up.

Yes, something along the lines of "there never was [episode 7, 8 and 9], that was a media thing."

Mr. Lucas, you are a complicated man, sir.

Agreed - a complicated but undeniably talented man.

Lucas has flip-flopped for years. at one point it was 9 movies, at one point 12 movies. remember, this is the guy who said he had all 6 movies already written and that they would just need a polish and then he had to film episodes 1-3 separately instead of back to back as planned because he didn't have scripts for 2 and 3.

personally not thrilled about this as I don't like JJ's style. At least with Empire and Jedi, Lucas was heavily involved but it is unlikely he will be as involved here as he was with those - just look at the number of Star Wars movies being released now. we may be surprised with what happens but I think this is going to be the first of many Star Wars movies that just waterdown the francise. it won't be fan of the original or prequel anymore, it will be fan of Star Wars with or without Lucas.

I wouldn't worry too much about his style, 'cause I don't think it will be evident in these films. I believe they may have hired him because he's a fan, and a talented director (whose style pisses off a lot of people), that could possibly mimic the feel of the original trilogy.

I think each of the original films had their own style, only the prequels are uniform in that regard (except for the scenes Spielberg boarded), so I'm not going to be scandalized if Episode VII has more intuitive and robust choreography for the lens. Worked for Empire Strikes Back.

I know where you quoted that from:

http://www.deadline.com/2012/11/next...michael-arndt/

It refers to a statement Bob Iger made on October 30:

http://www.deadline.com/2012/10/star...ovies-planned/

On that same day StarWars.com released this video:

http://starwars.com/news/a-discussio...ars/index.html

Which George Lucas said he has story treatments for Episodes VII, VIII, IX and a bunch of other movies.

So on October 30, both Bob Iger and George Lucas mentioned about story treatments. And then on November 9, it was officially announced that Michael Arndt will write the full screenplay:

http://starwars.com/news/michael-arn...isode-vii.html

That's all we have. There was never official statements about him writing the treatments. The article you quoted was misleading, as I point out above Bob Iger was not really commenting about the announcement of Michael Arndt. Now Bob could be referring to him because he was hired long before the acquisition, but there were never direct connection to him. You could be right, but until it is official I can only consider it as speculation only.

And according to autobiographer Dale Pollock who has read George Lucas' story treatments:

“It was originally a 12-part saga,” Pollock told TheWrap. “The three most exciting stories were 7, 8 and 9. They had propulsive action, really interesting new worlds, new characters. I remember thinking, ‘I want to see these 3 movies.’”

http://www.thewrap.com/movies/column...xclusive-63006

Not sure they would abandon that, and he hates the prequels. Also notice he mentioned 12 episodes.Consider this article as well:

Yes, he has story treatments written by Michael Arndt with the cooperation of himself and LucasFilm. The Emperor wasn't even dead in the "episodes 7, 8, and 9" treatment Lucas initially mapped out (and the biographer refers to), nor was Leia the sibling of Luke Skywalker. Luke was to face down the Emperor in Episode 9 with the help of his twin sister, who would appear from a far side of the Galaxy in Episode 7 (this was the "other" Yoda was talking about in Empire Strikes Back, it wasn't Leia).

Yeah, 9 films was always the plan. I hope Disney sticks to that. They can make their standalone films, but an episode beyond 9 would be too much for me.

Looks like Luke Skywalker might be firing up the 'ol lightsaber once again.

As details emerge about the upcoming Disney-backed relaunch of the Star Wars saga, information about the first new film remains thin. It is being written by Oscar winner Michael Arndt, and directed by J.J. Abrams, but no plot lines have emerged. Now, indications are that it will include some role for the original stars of the first trilogy -- at least according to the top star himself.

STORY: Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy on 'Star Wars,' 'Lincoln' and Secret J.J. Abrams Meetings

"They're talking to us," Mark Hamill, who played the orphan-turned-Jedi hero, tells Entertainment Tonight. "George [Lucas] wanted to know whether we'd be interested. He did say that if we didn't want to do it, they wouldn't cast another actor in our parts – they would write us out. I can tell you right away that we haven't signed any contracts. We're in the stage where they want us to go in and meet with Michael Arndt, who is the writer, and Kathleen Kennedy, who is going to run Lucasfilm. Both have had meetings set that were postponed -- on their end, not mine. They're more busy than I am."

Hamill says he has no indication of what the films will be about, exactly, but wants his surviving co-stars to all be involved, from Carrie Fisher to Billy Dee Williams and Tony Daniels, who played the robot C-3PO. He also thinks his character will follow in the footsteps of his mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

PHOTOS: 'Star Wars' Actors, Then and Now

"I'm assuming, because I haven't talked to the writers, that these movies would be about our offspring -- like my character would be sort of in the Obi-Wan range [as] an influential character... When I found out [while making the original trilogy] that ultimate good news/bad news joke – the good news is there's a real attractive, hot girl in the universe; the bad news is she's your sister – I thought, 'Well, I'm going to wind up like Sir Alec [Guinness]. I'm going to be a lonely old hermit living out in some kind of desert igloo with a couple of robots.'"

Lucasfilm and Disney are planning a new trilogy of films, as well as spinoff movies that focus on individual characters. It was reported earlier this month that the studio was prepping films about Han Solo, the iconic space trafficker played by Harrison Ford, and bounty hunter Boba Fett. Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are working on two spinoff films.

Hamill is currently starring in the film Sushi Girl and has made a career in voice acting, most notably voicing The Joker in various Batman cartoons and video games.

I don't see how the "original 3" couldn't do this. It's basically one last hurrah for them(except, maybe Ford?). So I'm thinking it's going to happen, and for Luke it will be a passing of the torch to set up the next 2 films....or....

maybe the sign on for all three films, and the pass the torch for Episodes 10,11,12!
