Small markets and, as the same companies already released the seies on DVD ages ago, they already "own" the old dubs.

In regards to 3.33, I'm surprised the release with a slip and the booklet are still being sold. The release is five years old. I'm guessing there was excess stock or is FUNi trying to make money off the franchise while they can?

On a related note, I've never been a fan of the slip (because consistency) and am even more annoyed now. I pulled my copy out last night and noticed a small piece of the coloring had magically fallen off leaving a very noticeable white spot among the shade of aqua. Not sure what kind of material was even used to begin with. I'm definitely going to rebuy if GKIDS re-releases the first three movies...

As a sub watcher, I personally have no stake in the dub situation, but if they're not including the Netflix dub then I also hope they're not going to be using those Netflix subtitles. Even beyond the well-known Kaworu issue, Netflix's subs were incredibly stiff and sterile, and I'd much rather see ADV's old subs on this upcoming release. I thought this would be unlikely given Khara's stance towards American companies' handling of their property the past X years, but Netflix's high self-produced content fees or whatever now give me a glimmer of hope.

Sounds like Funi used the same material as their 2.22 slipcover, which was notorious for peeling/flaking. It was even mentioned as far back as the initial High Def Digest review in 2011, so it was a faulty design from the get-go and not some hidden defect that would take years to surface.

Of course I never owned their 3.33 release, as I got sick of Funi's delays and bought the Hong Kong LE release back in April 2014 instead. Good thing I did, as not only would it take another 22 months for it to get released Stateside, but Funi's video encoding was greatly deficient to boot.

If GKIDS does get the license for the Rebuild films I would definitely rebuy them, as they did a fine job with their Studio Ghibli re-releases after Disney's license expired. While the video encoding wasn't quite as good as the Japanese originals, it was still more than acceptable IMO.

^Ironically, my 2.22 is intact; the only whitening is on the embossed black letters on the spine which was there from the start. At least we know GKIDS will release a standard slip with no frills so this issue won’t be prevalent.

I’m no expert on PQ but I did read that people were complaining about 3.33’a audio when it first came out. I watch sub only so if it was with the English track I wouldn’t know, but if that’s the case then I wouldn’t be surprised because Funi.

@Raye
Its been noted by others that some of Funi's dub tracks seem to be set a few decibels lower than normal. I think it was the first time that it cropped up in a movie released by Funi though. It was noticeable on my setup at the time, but not as glaring as other releases. I seem to recall watching Princess Jellyfish at one point and having to crank up the volume.

FUNimation's 3.33 release had a good amount of ugly banding as well.

I have all three FUNi BDs, but now you've got me curious about the first two movies. Do you think the quality of FUNi's first two discs are below par, too?

Obviously the compression is lesser than the Japanese and Italian BDs, but there's nothing offensive about them with regards to quality.

I'm in the "If they get re-released by GKids and have a matching cover, along with the 4th film BD release - then I'll buy them, otherwise I'm happy not owning the Rebuild films" camp.

I could care less about Funi's mish-mash cover art debacle for the Rebuild films. What a dumpster fire.

I was going to collect the Anime Limited CE releases for the movies, since I never bothered with any of the US releases, but they were only able to put out the 1.11 CE before loosing access to it, so that's all I have. I'm not even a fan of Eva, 1.11 is still the only Eva I've ever seen, and it didn't do anything for me at all - I only decided to get the AL CE for the nice packaging.

Justin Servais worked on Escaflowne?

That does raise an interesting question, as the "solid color w/ wordmark" motif that was used on all the Japanese video releases *except* the 1.01 standard edition and 1.11 DVDs just isn't a very marketable cover art design for US audiences.

One thought that crossed my mind would be to use the poster art from their respective Japanese cinema runs, but the problem with that is that the primary posters for 1.0 and 2.0 are far too similar to each other and there isn't a good alternate for either film. Evangelion 1.0's "stairs" poster doesn't really convey much of anything to a viewer, while 2.0's "red-tinted shore" and orange "screaming Eva sketch" posters are too vague and too disturbing, respectively.

Upon further reflection, I think this setup would work:The only downside is that Asuka doesn't get a cover that she's the "star" of, but then again Shikinami is rather different in terms of character as compared to her Soryu predecessor so that mitigates things a bit.

I need a reminder: what brought Anno and company into doing the Rebuild films? He's not under any obligation to go back to the EVA well if he feels like he did all he could with the series and wanted to move on to other projects.

In the recent NHK documentary about the making of Evangelion 3.0+1.0, there's a moment where he says he felt like everything he did after the original Evangelion felt like a self-parody, frequently re-using ideas and imagery from it. That's why he decided to go back to Evangelion in an attempt to finally get it out of his system and really say goodbye to it.

Anno laid it out back in 2006 in this poster/chirashi, of which a full English translation can be found in the booklets of both the US 1.01 DVD and 1.11 BD/DVD releases along with at least some of the corresponding UK releases.

Here's a photo someone took of the translated essay:

That would explain why his adaptation of Masami Tsuda's "Kare Kano" manga (Anno's first post-Evangelion project) often feels an awful lot like the "alternate universe" in the final TV episode of Evangelion...
