In regards to 3.33, I'm surprised the release with a slip and the booklet are still being sold. The release is five years old. I'm guessing there was excess stock or is FUNi trying to make money off the franchise while they can?
On a related note, I've never been a fan of the slip (because consistency) and am even more annoyed now. I pulled my copy out last night and noticed a small piece of the coloring had magically fallen off leaving a very noticeable white spot among the shade of aqua. Not sure what kind of material was even used to begin with. I'm definitely going to rebuy if GKIDS re-releases the first three movies... |

As a sub watcher, I personally have no stake in the dub situation, but if they're not including the Netflix dub then I also hope they're not going to be using those Netflix subtitles. Even beyond the well-known Kaworu issue, Netflix's subs were incredibly stiff and sterile, and I'd much rather see ADV's old subs on this upcoming release. I thought this would be unlikely given Khara's stance towards American companies' handling of their property the past X years, but Netflix's high self-produced content fees or whatever now give me a glimmer of hope.

Of course I never owned their 3.33 release, as I got sick of Funi's delays and bought the Hong Kong LE release back in April 2014 instead. Good thing I did, as not only would it take another 22 months for it to get released Stateside, but Funi's video encoding was greatly deficient to boot. If GKIDS does get the license for the Rebuild films I would definitely rebuy them, as they did a fine job with their Studio Ghibli re-releases after Disney's license expired. While the video encoding wasn't quite as good as the Japanese originals, it was still more than acceptable IMO. Last edited by svenge; 05-17-2021 at 11:28 AM. |

^Ironically, my 2.22 is intact; the only whitening is on the embossed black letters on the spine which was there from the start. At least we know GKIDS will release a standard slip with no frills so this issue won’t be prevalent.
I’m no expert on PQ but I did read that people were complaining about 3.33’a audio when it first came out. I watch sub only so if it was with the English track I wouldn’t know, but if that’s the case then I wouldn’t be surprised because Funi. |

@Raye
Its been noted by others that some of Funi's dub tracks seem to be set a few decibels lower than normal. I think it was the first time that it cropped up in a movie released by Funi though. It was noticeable on my setup at the time, but not as glaring as other releases. I seem to recall watching Princess Jellyfish at one point and having to crank up the volume. |

Obviously the compression is lesser than the Japanese and Italian BDs, but there's nothing offensive about them with regards to quality.

I could care less about Funi's mish-mash cover art debacle for the Rebuild films. What a dumpster fire. |

One thought that crossed my mind would be to use the poster art from their respective Japanese cinema runs, but the problem with that is that the primary posters for 1.0 and 2.0 are far too similar to each other and there isn't a good alternate for either film. Evangelion 1.0's "stairs" poster doesn't really convey much of anything to a viewer, while 2.0's "red-tinted shore" and orange "screaming Eva sketch" posters are too vague and too disturbing, respectively. Upon further reflection, I think this setup would work:

I need a reminder: what brought Anno and company into doing the Rebuild films? He's not under any obligation to go back to the EVA well if he feels like he did all he could with the series and wanted to move on to other projects.

In the recent NHK documentary about the making of Evangelion 3.0+1.0, there's a moment where he says he felt like everything he did after the original Evangelion felt like a self-parody, frequently re-using ideas and imagery from it. That's why he decided to go back to Evangelion in an attempt to finally get it out of his system and really say goodbye to it.
