It appears about 90%+ of his recruits came from Texas or California. Guys like Harrell and Crabtree were recruited very heavily by bigger programs and he still managed to get them to go to Tech.

If he could keep that pipeline to texas it would be awesome I just worry he might have to adjust to east coast guys where the SEC, and Big10 eat up a majority of the recruits.

In what are believed to be his first comments since this story broke, Leach on Sunday told Sporting News’ Steve Greenberg via text: “Lots of positive rumors. Hopefully some are true. I haven’t talked to them.”

I think Leach will be a great hire but I'm disgusted by the way Maryland is treating Friedgen. They should have just fired him before this whole thing started. They were living in a dream world if they thought he was going to choose to retire and not get the $2 million they owed him. Friedgen is a Maryland alumni and deserved better than the athletic director going behind his back hiring a successor while he was still coach. I don't have a problem with them firing Friedgen because he only had a year left on his deal so they either had to fire him or give him an extension, but I strongly disagree with the way their athletic director handled the situation.

One thing that is interesting is ESPN televises ACC games, and Mike Leach has a pending defamation suit against ESPN.

Yeah I think its sad they tried to say oh you are so great you should retire so we don't have to buy you out I'd have just laughed and said just give me my 2 million and I'll be on my way. He may deserve better but I'm just happy he's gone

Sounds like a done deal now. Friedgen is getting a $2 mill buyout, so I'm sure they've come to terms with Leach.

I hope so I just want the deal done . I can't wait to have him in the ACC it should be SO much easier for him to succeed then having to always play Oklahoma, Texas, Oklahoma State, and then in the south Nebraska (not anymore though), Missouri, Kansas was competitive when he was there.

Wish we could've gotten him in Minnesota, it has been far too long since we've been a perennial top 10 team.

When Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson announced Monday he was firing Friedgen, he said he was making a decision that was in the long-term interest of the program. The Terps have been bleeding fans and relevancy for years; a change had to be made despite Friedgen’s 74 wins and his program’s stellar graduation rates.
Malzahn would bring the excitement of the now, without the potential baggage of the past that Leach has. Malzahn’s offenses at Arkansas, Tulsa and Auburn have been as powerful as they are prolific, despite the fact that he has never had the same quarterback start in back-to-back seasons.
No matter where Malzahn ends up next season, he’ll have his sixth starting quarterback in as many seasons. And his quarterback (and offense) will be among the NCAA’s best.
That would be worse then Fridge I don't want Malzahn anywhere near my program. All he's done is take advantage of having Cam Newton.

I always laugh when I hear about "stellar graduation rates." No coach is ever hired and fired over graduation rates. Nobody cares about them. All that matters is wins and losses in college football. And ya, I agree 100% about Malzahn. Any dope can look good with Newton running their offense.

Yeah really I'd take a team full of dopes with 1.0 gpa's for BCS games and Championships Only gpa I care about is my own

ESPN's Joe Schad says if Maryland and Mike Leach can't reach a deal then there is mutual interest with UConn coach Randy Edsell. One of Maryland's biggest boosters is Under Armour founder and former Maryland player Kevin Plank and Plank supports the hire of Leach, whose Texas Tech team wore Under Armour gear, so it's likely a deal will get done.

You're probably right, Charlie Strong is going to take that program places. With being in an automatic qualifying conference, the ceiling is potentially very high for the Louisville Cardinals.

It's absolutely a joke that Louisville was the best job Strong could get. I've said it before and I'll say it again. NCAA Football needs a "Rooney Rule" far more than the NFL does. He should have at least been granted an interview for the recently open Florida head coaching job. He's many times more qualified for a top-tier job stiffs like Lane Kiffin.

Louisville is a very good job. After Bobby Petrino left they had a couple down years but they are still a very good football school in a BCS conference. You could easily argue that Louisville is a better job than the Mississippi State job Dan Mullen took. Even though Mississippi State is in a better conference it's going to be much harder for Mullen to be successful, whereas Strong has a great chance to have Louisville atop the Big East within a couple years and would then be in line for top-tier jobs. Florida didn't conduct any known interviews other than Muschamp, and they already knew Strong from his years there so even if he got an interview it wouldn't have made a difference.

The Rooney Rule is a joke. The spirit of the rule is great but has it ever been successful with the exception of when the Rooneys were hiring a new coach? It just forces teams to give token interviews to people with no chance at getting the job, like last year when the Seahawks were forced to interview a minority when they already had an agreement with Pete Carroll. I'm all for giving chances to minority coaches but the Rooney Rule is not making a difference.

Yes, the rule has worked. Coaching/high level executive jobs in the NFL are roughly 22% minority (has Rooney Rule) compared to roughly 6% in NCAA Football (has no such rule). That could just be a coincidence but I highly doubt it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rooney_...-collegerule-7

Quote:
Since the Rooney Rule was established, several NFL franchises have hired minority head coaches, including the Steelers themselves, who hired Mike Tomlin before their 2007 season (The Steelers, however, had already interviewed Ron Rivera to fulfill the Rule before interviewing Tomlin, and Rooney himself contends that Tomlin's hiring did not result from the Rule). At the start of the 2006 season, the overall percentage of African American coaches had jumped to 22%, up from 6% prior to the Rooney Rule. Even so, the policy is still debated and no team has stated whether the Rooney Rule contributed to the hiring of a minority.
