To be fair, he has bashed physical media in many threads and for at least 7 years now. He has been warned about those kind of comments on more than one occasion, too. It is a violation of the forum rule quoted regardless of how many different threads he has posted such comments in.

Even with all of that said, I hope that he is back with us soon. No matter how often or how strongly I have disagreed with him, I like having him around; he is a part of our community.
Agreed. Yeah, I didn’t realise he did it in other threads. My bad.

I wish I could be as magnanimous as you but I won't miss him. His ONLY purpose here is to cause trouble. The majority of us that prefer discs do not bash streaming the way he does physical media. We can have civil conversations. He is a troll and his ban only reinforces that. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

With that being said, I'm sure he'll be back shortly .

Agreed. Not sure why some posters do not see us disc supporters in a broader view. I have posted several times how long I have been doing IPTV and the amount of money spent on hardware for same. Have also spent a tidy sum on free to air satellite (FTA), both DVB-S and DVB-S2. The same for over the air (OTA) which we no longer use. So if anyone would like to have an MIT MDP-130 ATSC/QAM PCI tuner card with DVI output just let me know. Only operates with 32 bit machines running a single core.

Another thing lost on some, this site would not be possible without us that that buy disc. If someone wants to wave the EST flag that should be fine, just don't make snide remarks about disc in the process.

IIRC that poster has been warned about his negative post here by the mods. He really needs to learn how to extol the virtues of EST without bashing disc.

There have been times when I have been as bad as him, maybe even worse. Knowing this about myself, I can not be too harsh in judging him. He's not bad all of the time.

There are occasions when he has something useful to say such as when he simply recommends a movie or a TV show. It is absolutely okay that
he prefers streaming in all of its forms; he is entitled to his opinion the same as anyone. It is even alright that he criticizes physical media (it does have its drawbacks) and that he predicts the end of physical media; many of our forum members do the same on a regular basis.

He goes too far, for example, when he gleefully says that he wants discs to die with the sole intention to annoy and provoke people. That's trolling. If we were to go into one of the digital forums to wish the demise of streaming or EST that would be trolling also, but I know of no one here who does that.

As someone who has been banished a couple of times myself, I hope that he learns from the experience. Being banned can be an opportunity to improve if you allow it to be. Hopefully, he will return the better for it. I have set the same goal for myself after my own time-outs.

Made me think about Starship Troopers and The Great Wall which we have on disc. IMO, The Great Wall has a reference Atmos track, not as good as Midway but very good nonetheless. Will pass on Tomorrow War if it comes to disc.

Thanks to you and others for info on the B&N Criterion sale!!

I recently watched Chaos Walking on Blu-ray as a disc rental which had an Atmos track. I would have to say that it wasn't the best movie but still entertained me for the 109 minutes. The Atmos mix was a very effective and unique one it that it's highlight was floating voices moving above you, which is not something I have heard as a sustained effect before. I would say it is worth a rental just to hear one of the better Atmos mixes on the year so far. It will probably be one of the 4K discs I pick up later on BF, as the video was also stellar.

I picked up Ride with the Devil used at some point because even knowing nothing about it criterions are usually interesting.

I'll have to remember to watch it soon.

I also rented Chaos Walking.. We like Holland and Ridley and enjoyed it. Interesting concept.

So many great movies by Criterion, I think my favorite would be Mulholland Drive.

Box Office: ‘F9,’ ‘Boss Baby 2’ and ‘Forever Purge’ Dominate July 4th - Hollywood Reporter 7/3

Universal movies will claim the top three spots at the domestic box office in a rare feat for a Hollywood studio.

Quote:
There’s something for everyone at the July Fourth box office.

Universal’s F9: The Fast Saga will keep the pedal to the metal in its second weekend with a projected $24 million three-day weekend and $33 million for the four-day holiday, according to early Friday estimates.

To boot, the action pic will cross $100 million domestically in record time for the pandemic era and $500 million globally.

Universal is dominating the marquee all the way around, thanks to offering two new films in addition to F9: DreamWorks Animation’s sequel The Boss Baby: Family Business and the R-rated dystopian horror pic The Forever Purge, a perennial July Fourth favorite and the fifth installment in Blumhouse’s hit dystopian franchise.

Boss Baby 2 — which is also debuting and date on Peacock — is looking at a three-day box office opening of $20 million and $26 million for the four-day holiday. While that’s well below the $50 million debut of the 2017 sleeper hit, Universal believes that family fare have long legs. And while critics didn’t love the pic, audiences gave it an A CinemaScore (the first received an A-).

The follow-up to the first Boss Baby, a sleeper, reunites the Templeton brothers, voiced by Alec Baldwin. They are now grown and drifted away from each other. One is a married, stay-at-home dad; the other, a hedge fund CEO. But a new boss baby with a cutting-edge approach and a can-do attitude is about to bring them together again and inspire a new venture.

New additions to the series include Eva Longoria, Ariana Greenblatt, Jeff Goldblum and Amy Sedaris, who voices the new infant. Lisa Kudrow and Jimmy Kimmel reprise the roles as the parents of the Templeton boys.

The Forever Purge is targeting a third-day finish with $13 million and $16 million, respectively.

Directed by Everardo Gout, The Forever Purge is set on the Texas side of the border with Mexico, where arbitrary borders become physical walls and a fetish for gun rights amplifies the dangers of being an unwelcome visitor.

The July Fourth is historically a lucrative corridor for moviegoing, and usually sports a huge, new tentpole. This year’s numbers will be lower than usual because of the ongoing box office recovery. Top Gun: Maverick had been expected to lead the 2021 fireworks show, but Paramount opted to push back the Tom Cruise sequel to fall.

Paramount will still be a player in the holiday parade with A Quiet Place Part II, followed by Sony’s Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway in fifth place.

At the specialty box office, A24 is opening 2020 Sundance sensation Zola in 1,468 theaters (in pre-pandemic times, it likely would have gotten its start in in New York and Los Angeles, but that practice has been become challenged).

Zola, opening on Wednesday, is on course to earn at least $2.5 million for more for the six days, one of the best showings for an indie since the COVID-19 crisis commenced. Its gross through Friday was $1.2 million.

Taylour Paige and Riley Keough star in the acclaimed film, an odyssey through the Florida flesh trade that is based on one woman’s epic Twitter rant that went viral in 2015.

Hosting a movie tonight for a few friends. My favorite thing to do and the best part of this hobby. (Though watching alone is pretty fun too.)

Have all kinds of cold drinks (iced coffee, tea, soda, beer, cider), fresh popcorn. For candy all I have is Reeses cups but it's at least something.

The movie (Private School 1983 Shout Factory Blu Ray) is something none of us have seen and it doesn't rate well on Rotten Tomatoes but my friends are on an 80's nostalgia trip and hopefully it works.

edit- Fun movie night ... just 3 friends all in the mood to laugh and the movie was typical 80's teen comedy.

A few birthday's ago my wife gifted me with a table top full sized popcorn machine.

It looks exactly like this.

[Show spoiler]

The size of the kettle is 6 oz and I can put half a cup of kernels each time.

Most of the time I use corn oil. I bought some organic coconut oil but it never worked well until I tried it again last night. I put coconut oil then after several minutes the kernels and I salted the popcorn after it was popped.

Every said it was good and raided the candy too.

I love owning a theater even if it's a small home theater.

Happy 4th of July everyone!

Unlike Memorial Day, it is nice to be at home for this holiday. It is also the one month mark since my surgeries and the half-way point in my estimated recovery (average healing time is 2 months). I was supposed to be able to start trying some richer foods, like pizza, at this point, but my recent bloodwork says I have to wait a few more weeks. I was really looking forward to having some pizza this weekend, too.

I am back up to watching two movies per night most evenings. I watched Topaz and Fail-Safe last night.

For those of you that acquired Ride With The Devil it is a really good movie in my opinion. Just be aware that it is one of the Criterion blu-rays that was subject to bronzing during its first pressing; copies bought today should be fine, but be sure to check your disc. If your disc has bronzed, Criterion will replace it for free if you write to them.

Enjoy the holiday while keeping all fingers and toes safely attached.

I would double like your post if I could.

I'll check my disc as I bought it a while back. I have had Criterion replace a disc for me before I think it was Dressed to Kill but it could have been something else.

What a great goal to have - Soon Pizza. Has to be one of the best goals ever.

Happy to help in any way I can. But I would wait for a deal on it. Glad to hear the recovery is still moving forward, albeit a bit slower than originally thought. I have it on good authority that pizza will still be available in a couple weeks when you can indulge again.

Watching Once Upon A Time In Hollywood on 4K disc. Even though the digital version has DV, the 4K disc with HDR is much better and stable than the the digital version, especially towards the final act - the DV is almost pitch black in those scenes. I read in the dedicated 4K disc thread (Geoff mentions) that depending on the television set you have there might be tone mapping issues, which is why it's hard to see in those dark scenes.
