What I'm curious about is which Fulci films are being remastered. One source said The Beyond and City of the Living Dead, another The Beyond and The House by the Cemetery. Maybe we'll get lucky and Arrow will release a 'Gates of Hell' trilogy box set. It would seem a strange move to me excluding one of the films, but then this is the same company that's remastering The Cat o'Nine Tails over the vastly superior Inferno.

I agree CW has been pretty on top of things with upcoming stuff. You're right, it was another guy who mentioned 4K too, wasn't it? Still not confirmed yet, but it does seem very likely. For someone who detests Arrow and their customer base so much, it's funny CW (and I'll never type his name again, unless I call him 'that angry bloke' or something) seems to constantly be going "Hey Arrow fans, here's another cool thing they've got coming that you'll enjoy".
THE BEYOND is top of my re-released Fulci want list. I think if Arrow are pushing their way through Argento revisits, INFERNO can't be too far away, even if it's not part of the current upcoming batch. It would make a monster of a special release. |

Yeah I think I'll go from CW to cw. That's the opposite of his ego.

I'd love to see a Gates of Hell trilogy boxset with some lavish features, a nice book and postcards/plucked eyes.

I find it hard to believe there's a film that Inferno is vastly superior to. I thought it was a big mess with (IMO, I might have not paid enough attention) irrelevant sub-plots like that cat-drowner. And while I generally like the scores for Argento films, Emerson's score for some reason annoyed me.

Cat O Nine Tails on the other hand bored me to tears and the reveal at the end felt cheap, as the killer is a borderline background character. It feels like Argento attempted to recreate his success with Bird quickly to cash in on it, Four Flies comes across as a much more well rounded film even if it's one of his weakest |

It's subjective, but the fact remains that Cat is in much greater need of an update than Inferno.

Maybe I should give it another shot. I'm no stranger to dream like narratives (Bava's Lisa & The Devil is one of my favorites), but this one seemed more in the vein of "Let's throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks". I had read a hugely complimentary review by genre aficionado Richard Scheib on his website, which made me go wow, but the actual film never matched up to those expectations.

Inferno is amazing but it's most definitely a style over substance film. Isn't it known that they didn't know where they were going with the story even during filming? That's the why ending is so weak and that costume you see in the end looks god awful, like a halloween store purchase.

Inferno is an odd case for me, as I didn't initially care for it. I had rented Suspiria on VHS in the late 90's, my first experience with Argento, and was promptly blown away. In comparison, I found Inferno sorely lacking. But then, Suspiria is one hell of an act to follow, and I suppose my expectations were to blame more than anything. It wasn't until years later, watching the two back to back, that I allowed myself to get caught up in what a beautifully crafted film it truly is, it's exploration of alchemy and the expansion of the "Three Mothers" lore. It has only grown on me since, if not surpassing, at least equaling it's almighty predecessor, which I never would have predicted. From the elegance of Emerson's opening theme, all the way to the fiery denouement, I find it one of the most compelling works of art captured on film. My only complaint is that Irene Miracle is gone far too early. Other than that, I've done a complete 180. Even the costume at the end doesn't really bother me.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, I liked Opera from the get-go, but it sank like a stone with repeat viewings. Now, I consider it one of Argento's weakest efforts, only above total dross like Phantom of the Opera, Do You Like Hitchcock? and Giallo. As for The Cat o' Nine Tails, I like it, but I'm the odd man out in that my favorite of the "Animal Trilogy" is Four Flies on Grey Velvet. |

I never liked Inferno, personally. I watched it again a year ago, thinking "hey, maybe I'll think differently now". Nope, still don't like it.
I like Cat O' Nine Tails, didn't care for Four Flies, prefered Bird anyway (which is one of my favourite Argento). |
