Default Nielsen Viewing Time Chart

A chart to show how viewing time is divided. DVD* is listed in OTHER, transactional was listed in OTHER STREAMING, EST was not mentioned but one would assume it would be in with transactional. HBO Max was MIA unless it was included in OTHER STREAMING.

* My guess: DVD included all disc (DVD, BD & UHD BD) viewing.

Quentin Tarantino Buys Vista Theatre

The Oscar-winning writer-director says the landmark location will likely reopen around Christmas

Quote:

Quentin Tarantino is now the proud owner of two Los Angeles movie theaters.

The Oscar-winning writer-director revealed Monday on the Armchair Expert podcast hosted by Dax Shepard and Monica Padman that he bought the historic Vista Theatre on Sunset Boulevard. He also said that the single-screen movie theater will likely reopen later this year. It has been shuttered due to the pandemic.

“I bought the Vista on Sunset,” Tarantino proudly announced, not going into the business nitty-gritty. “We’ll probably open it up around Christmas time. And again: only film. It won’t be a revival house. We’ll show new movies that come out where they give us a film print. It’s not going to be like the New Beverly [Cinema]. The New Beverly has its own vibe. The Vista is like a crown jewel kind of thing. We’ll show older films, but it will be like you can hold a four-night engagement.”

The Landmark New Beverly was bought by Tarantino in 2007. It exclusively shows 35mm and 16mm films, most from Tarantino’s personal collection. The New Beverly reopened in mid-June. It has sold out every single night since it welcomed back guests.

The Vista Theatre opened on Oct. 9, 1923, showing both film and vaudeville acts. It seats 400 patrons.

Tarantino did not go easy on theater chains that were forced to close locations due to the pandemic, saying the viewing experience had changed too much, and not for the better.

“Some of these exhibitors that are going — I never like to see any movie theater closing — but some of these exhibitors who are going, the ****ing deserve to go,” Tarantino said on the podcast. “They have taken all the specialness out of movies anyway. Some of these chains where they’re showing commercials all through it. They don’t turn the lights down, everything is stadium seating, plastic shit.

He continued, “They have been writing their own epitaph for a long time, but they assumed the business would take you along. It’s been crazy throughout my career to see how the film experience is lessened for the viewer like every five years. However, I do think boutique cinemas actually will thrive in this time. And I am not talking about the La-Z-Boy, order nachos and margaritas … I actually like the Alamo Drafthouse a lot. But I have a living room, I want to go to the theater.”

Quentin Tarantino, one of my Hollywood favorites, does not sugarcoat his comments . Just finished re-watching Kill Bill I & II.

Hes right. Even post-lockdown, theater presentations I've experienced sucked. Last one was GvK 3D at an AMC theater. Poorly projected below 2D standards, much less 3D. Meanwhile the 3D BD was a much better image and experience even on a 100" display. I wouldnt cry if some of those theaters went away. They haven't learned a thing.

That’s not the case in my part of the U.K. Cineworld have installed new screens, new sound system and new decor. It was a joy to return and I was genuinely shocked at how great the picture quality looked and how crisp the audio was.

Just pre-ordered access to Black Widow on DisneyPlus.

(planning to buy the disc when it's available in October, unless it's super not good or something.)

(is premier access EST ? ... Modern terms can be confusing.)

I got my tickets for the 7 PM showing of Black Widow this Thursday night at my local AMC in their Big D theater (like an IMAX light). Can't wait!

Sounds good. I’m going to see Old (M.Night) in 4 weeks. Then it’s The Candyman and Halloween Kills in October. I love my HT but I want to show support to the industry.

I may have to bite the bullet and watch Black Widow via Disney+ since my back is still wobbly. I got my custom orthodics from the chiro, so that's taking some getting used to.

I watched the 4K disc of Django from Arrow Video yesterday, along with some Death Proof and Reservoir Dogs on BD.

I still have not seen F9 and don't know when I will get to it. The Green Knight opens July 30th and is one my most anticipated releases of the year.

Sorry to hear that. I hope your back improves soon.

The Green Knight is one of my most anticipated as well. If you have HBO Max Steven Soderbergh's new movie No Sudden Move is now available. One of my favorites of the year and an amazing cast. Highly recommended. I will definitely purchase a disc if it is released.

I watched No Sudden Move the other day and thought it was awesome. The Dolby Vision looked great. I also hope it gets a 4K disc release, but I doubt it'll happen since it's an HBO Original film.

If it was just me I would wait for October and just get the UHD of Black Widow.
My local theater remains closed.
But, I'm not the only marvel fan in the house.

I would not be surprised if it gets watched 4 times this weekend at my place

I plan on getting the disc also

Here is hopping Black Widow is good with a 2.39 picture and Atmos track. But being Disney it is a 2K DI and if like some of their other BB's the use of immersive audio may be lacking.

The trailer for The Green Knight looks really interesting. Wish it had been framed for 2.39 rather than 1.85. IMDb list as 4K DI with Dolby Digital as the sound track. Sure hope that is not the case for the sound track.

I know the first one is a new 4K scan approved by Dean Cundey and has original mono but can't find out about the others because the Shout Factory site keeps crashing lol. I guess people are excited.
